University pays Snooki more than Nobel Prize winner

Where's that gif of Seinfeld walking out in disgust when you need it...

A US university defended spending about $32,000 to bring reality television star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi to campus this week, despite several students questioning if it was a wise use of money.

The speaking fee Rutgers University in New Jersey paid to the star of the MTV reality television series The Jersey Shore is $2000 more than Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winning author Toni Morrison will receive to speak at graduation on May 15.

"We have more than 200 events on our campus during the course of the year, everything from scholarly presentations to entertainment," Rutgers spokesman Steve Manas said. "The students canvassed for who they wanted here and had the funds available."

More than 1000 people came to the university to hear Snooki speak Thursday.

Student Hina Rehman, 20, said she found it disappointing her tuition money was going to fund the event.

"The fact that our school spent $32,000 to bring her is ridiculous," she said. "It's fine the money used here is meant for entertainment purposes, but I think we can get better entertainment than that."

Manas said the event was funded by the Rutgers University Programing Association, a student events group that receives some of the mandatory fees tacked onto tuition. The university will pay Morrison for her commencement speech with money from a deal with beverage company Pepsi.

"PepsiCo has a vending contract with Rutgers," Manas said. "That money can be used in a variety of ways. The money supports enhancing student life and the university community."

The displeased student said regardless of the source of the money for either event, she still found it appalling the school spent more money on Snooki than an esteemed author praised for her extensive writing on African American women.

"The fact that our school spent more money on her than Toni Morrison is a little ludicrous," Rehman said. "Snooki has no accomplishments or achievements that are worthy of that money."

Student Josh Kaufmann, 19, attended the event and said he doesn't understand the outcry over Snooki's paid appearance.

"She did two events and they were both jam packed with lines out the door," he said. "I don't watch The Jersey Shore, but it's a popular TV show and the money went toward a really good event. I don't care however much money the school spends on bringing someone as long as it's someone that is going to be popular among students."

Polizzi is not only a reality TV star, she is also a New York Timesbestselling author. The pint-sized star's novel,  A Shore Thing, made it to number 24 on the hardcover fiction list in January this year.

I've almost come to the conclusion that we in the west deserve to disappear up our own pop cultural assholes. Fuck.

What the fuck does Snooki do for $32,000? I mean, when you pay that amount, you want, maybe, a good speaker, or a talented performer, or an interesting personality. When has this lawn gnome of a woman been any of those?

Have you ever been to Rutgers? It's filled with people who look just like the cast of Jersey Shore. I dunno, maybe they like having one of their own become famous? (My asking that question is in no way an endorsement of Snooki or a denial that this is in fact a signpost on the road to complete destruction of our civilization.)

Say what you want about our country but what makes a college so stupid?

I thought they were the ideal?

Who's that Toni Morison dude? Has he been on anything I know of?

Remember this?

Pretty sure that's him.

(iirc, he won the Nobel Prize for Slow Jams in 1998.)

Oh, thanks.

(Who wants to take a guess at how many times this exact conversation took place at that college?)

32000 dollars for fucking Snooki? Jesus. What has this world come to.

I know, I'd pay a grand, tops.

Wait - this is for TALKING?!

Morison usually charges twice that- she cut her price for Rutgers.

$32,000 for Snooki at Rutgers does not surprise me. It's the public university of New Jersey, so I get a little bit of a "one of us" vibe.

Um, nobody's saying that the students at Rutgers are stupid or any more stupid than any other kids attending college (at least I'm not saying that.) Too many fucking people watch Jersey Shore to single out the student of Rutgers. Plus I had fun when I visited New Brunswick. Great little college town. More just that a lot of the students naturally dress and act similar to those from the Jersey Shore, so having one of their own make it, such as "it" is, is probably validating in some weird way.
