I'm brave enough to say it -- I saw this movie with my wife and kids. So there.
Anyways, still haven't read any of the books but the oldest still reads them right when they come out.
Overall, enjoyable for what it is -- (mostly) inoffensive "family" entertainment where some parents will cringe while the kids are cheering.
Child leads are still competently acted regardless of whether you are gradually starting to really dislike Greg Hefley (like I am). That said, the story is mostly on autopilot and, when the time comes for some character growth, you've only really half bought into it. You get the feeling that the kids could really sell it under a better script/director, but it was probably sacrificed to the Gods of Canon.
Adults (yes, I'm still looking at you, Steve Zahn) are still railing against their fate and hamming things up, dialed up to 11. Luckily, and rightly so, the kids get most of the screen time.
According to my son, with a few minor alterations, this is pretty faithful to the book.
Another sign I'm going senile: there was no swearing in this middle school movie and I didn't realize it until afterwards.
