The Hangover II gets its edgy ad pulled from theaters, while Regal and others threaten to limit trailer time.

Why the fuck would they pull The Hangover's trailer from theaters? Are we talking about something other than what was released the other day?

And it's nice to see the movie industry so determined not to follow the music one into relative obsolescence. In this war theaters may win a couple of battles but they will lose in the end.

So how exactly is limiting trailers from screens anything other than an empty threat in this internet age?

No way this is going to kneecap the studios or anything, but it's what the theaters have. It might just be enough to have them reconsider an untested, unpopular model they're not entirely sure about in the first place. Besides, with online unless something goes viral, people are still only watching shit for shit they'd want to see anyway. Captive audiences can't be overvalued.

From what I read, it's because the final bit with the monkey/pants bulge was put in the trailer without being cleared by the MPAA.

I'd like to strangle the MPAA with my bare hands. Not out of some extreme love or defense of The Hangover, but just because they truly make the world a much lamer place in general.

Also, considering the revenue split on ticket sales becomes more favorable to the theaters with each subsequent weekend, anything to further front-load box office receipts is surely infuriating to them.

This^. Taking from BO bottom line, especially when the theaters make a bigger piece of the pie...

I'm ambivalent about this development. While I love the communal experience of watching movies in theaters, there's no denying that theaters have allowed that experience to be poisoned by rude patrons, incompetent projectionists and price gouging that would make OPEC blush. I'd hate to see theaters disappear, but they've been digging their own graves for a while.
