Well, then that sounds more like what happened with swimmer Ian Thorpe before he retired. There were these photos of him all pudgey and supposedly out of shape but what he was doing was the standard bulking-up thing before doing the convert-to-muscle thing.

Somehow, I don't think that's Russell's deal. He's pulling a Brando.

And it is true, fat cells shrink mainly, but your body actually does destroy fat cells through a process called apoptois.  This process is facilitated by certain healthy foods.  But even then, fat cells can shrink to almost non-existence.  If someone is willing to radically alter their diet and throw in some exercise, I think remaining slim is pretty easy.  But it is true, if one has never been fat in their life, it is much easier to remain thin.  But studies have shown, even if one was overweight in life, the longer you remain in a certain state of fatness or thiness, that is the state your body will remain in the easiest.  So if you were overweight as child and teen, but become thin for a significant time during your adult life, you shouldn't have a problem remaining that way.

The reason we're fat is because our food system, all the crap that is available.  All the sugar and corn by products that are subsidized, make unhealthy foods extremely cheap.  Also our food is packed with gluten, and gluten eats away your intestines lining, and stops you from absorbing minerals and vitamins, thus we stay hungry when we shouldn't.  And the whole genetics argument is largely bs, because the main indicator for obesity is income.

The simple fact is we do not eat food to promote a healthy gut.  And most people don't realise most of your body's serotonin, the good stuff, is located in your gut, not your brain.  Which is why so many mental diseases and seratonin dysfunctions are directly linked to our diets.

Crowes acting heroes are the guys that let themselves go at middle age and didn't give a crap what anyone thought of their hobbies (well, eating and drinking really); the Ollie Reeds, Dickie Burtons, Marlon Brandos and Richard Harris's. He's cut from an old school masculine cloth as far as the way he handles himself and doesn't care what others reckon, this turn in his physical appearance was always going to be a given.

It's amazing how people can't stop talking about chubby Russell Crowe, while Certified Copy is OnDemand currently, and the corresponding thread has one response.

but seriously guys...

Just a friendly reminder... this thread is now on page two of discussing Russell Crowe's belly. Certified Copy, meanwhile, is still one of the year's best.

Okay, I'll bite. Let's all talk about Art House movies. We will be better people for it!

(But seriously, this is your crusade?)

Propostion 1:

If Binoche had a big fat gut on her there'd be no way she was in your beloved little French movie, right? However, if the role of the guy wasn't specifically British, somebody like Depardieu could easily get to play it.

Discuss:

Of course an actor's weight (and gender) is worth shooting the shit about. It effects the roles they play and what they might be gearing up for. Even the possible remaining interest they have in their career. Crowe is obviously at some sort of cross-roads. For the purposes of comparison, Depardieu has long been comfortable in his busting-at-the-seams physicality. It does get ridiculous when he attempts to step outside that physical wheelhouse though and the same is starting to be true of Crowe.

Proposition 2:

Certified Copy will out if it's any good or of interest to an audience.

Discuss:

It slipped by me in every medium of review. It's a terrible title for a start. Unless it refers to someone finding a "certified copy" of some amazing/scandalous tome that nobody's seen before? But I jumped to IMDB for a quick look and all I saw was Julliette Binoche, the French or Italian Countryside and all the tells of a middle-aged arthouse romance. Well, god bless middle-aged, middle-class literati and their personal dramas. I don't begrudge them their movie. But, WTF is with bringing up like it's a thing? Breaking In(?) was terrible to the point of being insulting. It's been a decade since the English Patient and The 3 Colors Trilogy, Damage and Lovers on the Bridge. Nobody is talking about the movie anywhere, bar this ephemeral, jokey thread. Even the reviews on IMDB aren't that insistent in their praise. Hardly the kind of commentary you'd expect around a "Year's Best".

Conclusion 1:

Gimme more Fatboy Russ hilarity. Maybe it'll filter through to him and he'll actually make another movie worth our time and money. Until I start hearing that Certified Copy is anything other than what it looks like from more than one weak source (just because it's Arthouse, doesn't make it worthy of any more attention I'd give any other movie in passing), I'll give it a pass til I perhaps drift into it's demographic or some chick I'm sweet on chooses it as her rental.

Conclusion 2:

You know, if you like this sort of story, you really should hit the bookshop. The shelves are FULL of this literati soap opera stuff. Some of them might even make good movies. Be sure to tell us which ones! You know where to find us.
