Should we just sew his mouth shut all over again?

A directing debut by a VXF guy? Hey, it worked for Spawn.

Fox knocks another one outta the park!

Spawn would have been a fine example to bring up in the news item! But I can't ever remember that film actually exists. Is there a 12 step program I could join to remind me?

And AVP:R!!!

ugh

Is RR obligated and/or passionate about this?

Just to play Devil's Advocate here, that strategy did, in fact, happen to work for Blade.

Is it a vfx heavy script?
Last I heard, fox was looking for comedy directors. I guess that didn't work out.

Really the most unsettling thing is that Deadline referred to Deadpool and X-men First Class as X-MEN ORIGINS: DEADPOOL and X-MEN ORIGINS: FIRST CLASS. They're not really going to continue with that shit, are they?

Not exactly jumping for joy at the news, but to be fair I wasn't looking for a Deadpool sitcom either, so a guy who can handle the whiz-bang isn't  necessarily a bad thing if he's paired with the right script and the right actor (and really, there's only one right actor).

EDIT: And please, please, PLEASE Fox, distance this from the X-Men as much as possible.

The script that I read had a parodic flashback to a scene of Deadpool rejecting an invite to the X-Men. Also, Colossus is one of the main characters. The script also openly mocked the fact that the movie was breaking fully from the Wolverine continuity, so I'll bet some things were changed.

That kind of self-referential humor sounds great. Trying to shoehorn Deadpool into some sort of X-Universe continuity, not so much. There's a lot of things that could go wrong with this film, but not being able to break the 4th wall with abandon is probably one of the biggest.

Since Reynolds is committed to other films up to around 2032, can we just get Joel McHale instead, please?

Of course they will. How else will we know that the FIRST Class that Professor X taught was before all the other ones.

Seriously I know I'm banging a very old drum here, but I just can not understand what the fuck Fox are doing with this license. I heard a rumour that work was being done on sequels to Singer/Ratners films. So what does that mean? We'll have the First Class franchise (it won't be a one off), the continuation of the original trilogy, the Wolverine Spin-offs and the Deadpool spin off which will explicitly tell us to ignore the Wolverine films.

I honestly thought hiring Matthew Vaughn and hiring fucking Darren Aronofsky was a new leaf for Fox, but now I have the unpleasant burning feeling of their mighty Cock in my bum. It was all a ploy to get me into bed. Sure, I got in willingly, but I can't help but feel manipulated.

Gavin Hood was an untried actor?

Director. It was a typo, but apparently at least two CHUD readers have never heard of one.

I understand you meant director, but how was he untried? Maybe not in the action genre, but he was quite a successful director at the time. An interesting, ballsy choice that didn't pan out.

Was it? I didn't see "Rendition," but everything I heard about it made it sound like a total piece of shit. And "Tsotsi" was pretty ridiculous, hamhanded melodrama. I understand it won the Best Foreign Film Oscar, but it's the showiest, most implausible movie to win in that category in awhile. Tsotsi was passable enough with the action that I thought, oh, as long as he shoots a good script word-for-word, Wolverine will be watchable. I was also under the impression that they had a script that wasn't written in fucking Crayola.

RENDITION's not great, but for what it is I found it very entertaining. And TSOTSI? I can get with the melodrama criticism but was still floored by it. He'd also made another really good feature before called A REASONABLE MAN. So in all, I thought at the time that Fox was taking a chance on a talent who's more interested in narrative and performance than spectacle - unlike, say, a VFX supervisor. Did turn out to be the wrong choice though.

To be fair, Aronofsky's departure seems to stem from personal family matters.

From what a source told me, Hood literally had no idea what he was doing on set.  From the outside, he seemed like a bold choice with some indie experience but apparently that wasn't the case.

Even if I'm going to be more charitable than my source was, and say that it could happen to anyone with Fox undermining them, I find it sort of telling Hood hasn't landed any major gigs (the box office of Wolverine should have kept him at Fox, right?) since then. No studio will bite on that Ender's Game package he's shopping, not even with Orci and Kurtzman on as producers.

It's sort of a ret-con of the story, I suppose...especially since, on paper, he did have more experience than an FX guy. Maybe this is proof that a resume means nothing.

Let's also not forget the two HUGE differences between Deadpool (and The Wolverine) and the abomination that was the first Wolverine ...

1.  Both have supposedly great screenplays, whereas Wolverine entered production with an unfinished script.

2.  Both have their stars as producers who actually want a good movie to be made this time 'round.

Ryan Reynolds is not contracted to do Deadpool.  He WANTS to do it, but only if it is done right.  The script has met with his approval and is apparently the same draft making the rounds that everyone seems to be going ga-ga for.  Reynolds is on the way up and it looks like Fox is actually going to let him make an R-rated irreverent Deadpool flick.  If the script really is as good as everyone claims, then the visual aspects of the film will be all Tim Miller will need to focus on as long as he snags a solid supporting cast.  As for Hugh, his contract ran out after Origins.  Word is that he's fully willing to keep playing Wolverine, but only as long as he gets script and director approval.  I suspect that if the next Wolverine film were to turn out a mess, he'd walk away from the franchise.  I'm not too worried though, as McQuarrie's script is supposed to be great and I'm sure they will try to button done a solid director for it.

As for First Class, do we know for sure that film is setting up a prequel franchise?  I have never read a single article that even hinted at the possibility of a First Class II.  Everytime you see an article talking about future X-projects, all they refer to are the following:  The Wolverine, Deadpool, X-Men IV, and X-Men V............with the latter two being sequels to X-Men III.  Back in the day Jackman talked up the possibility of a trio of solo Wolvie films, but nothing has been said about a third one since.  The solo Gambit film has also dropped off the radar as well, though I wouldn't be surprised if they tossed him into X-Men IV.

I believe Jackman had script and director approval for X-Men 3 and the first Wolverine.

I know he did for the first Wolverine, but he was also contracted to star in it.  Even Hugh isn't immune from studio pressure.  Most of the stories about the production that I have read state that it would have been an even greater mess if it wasn't for Hugh.  If they are true, that is beyond depressing.  Both projects were also rushed from the get-go, whereas Hugh was given time to develop this one.  He picked Chris McQuarrie.  He met individually with a bunch of directors.  He tried to get Singer to make it, but Bryan passed to do First Class instead...................and then dropped out of that to do Jack the Giant Killer (which is only just now starting to reach the production stage!).  He finally convinced his buddy Darren to do the flick.  Now he has to start over.  Fox is giving it time because they are likely afraid that Hugh will walk if they don't.
