"The Avengers" Pre-Release/Speculation Thread

So we're a little over a year away from one of the biggest geek movie events in history. I've been half and half on the Marvel movies so far, but I can't deny the excitement of unifying all these characters onscreen. Of course, the movie fan in me is also excited by the combination of actors, with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans playing off each other, and Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo and Samuel L. Jackson on the periphery.

What's interesting is that there's still not much we know about the story, and, knowing Marvel, we don't know what the film represents in what appears to be one continuing on-screen story. So I think there's a lot to speculate about:

1) Marvel only has Iron Man 3 slated for 2013. Beyond that, they have writers set for "Black Panther," "Dr. Strange," "Ant-Man," "War-Machine," "Iron Fist," "Runaways" and another 'Captain America." Which one of these happens next? Or will it be a previously-unannounced property? And will they pop up in "The Avengers" beforehand? Will they be mentioned?

2) How will they handle the sheer firepower of this team? Thor, Iron Man and Hulk could destroy the world. Black Widow kicks people. Hawkeye shoots arrows. What will be the relationship between the Avengers and SHIELD?

3) Who could possibly return from previous Marvel movies? The Abomination is still out there. It seems certain Loki's coming back. How about Justin Hammer? And the end of "The Incredible Hulk" certainly suggests that General Thunderbolt Ross is involved in the Avengers somehow.

4) The government is trying to modify the Super Soldier Serum, as seen in the earlier films. With Hulk and Captain America benefiting from the formula, might they try to design their very own Avenger, knowing the science behind it?

5) In Cap and Thor, the Avengers have two characters who wield projectiles that magically boomerang back to them. Won't this be visually monotonous?

6) Who is the leader of the Avengers? Though it's not a part of any of the films so far, there's apparently some sort of change between the end of Iron Man 2 and Incredible Hulk where Tony Stark seems like a point man for assembling the team. Captain America has always seemed like the face of the Avengers, but is it possible they yield to Downey being the big star? And with Iron Man 3 on the docket for the very next year, how much Downey can we expect in "The Avengers"?

Anyway, just some talking points, curious to know what others think.

Gabe T, Here are my hopefully...MARVELous guesses!

1) I really would love to see, Marvel take some of their least known characters and combine them.  To me, Dr. Strange works best in a large group of heroes, I.E. The Defenders, a company wide team up, which brings me to...Marvel 2 in one or Marvel Team Up!  Power Man and Iron Fist, Ant Man and Wasp, Dr. Strange and Blade, Valkryie and Hulk etc.  In lieu of that I would guess...Power Man in 2013, followed by Iron Fist in 2014, and a team up...Power Man/Iron Fist in 2015 or 2016, as comparatively speaking, these properties would be cheaper, as the heroes powers are less flashy, thus less expensive than other powers.  I would...Definitely set PM IF in the...1970's.  Black Panther is another possibility!

2) Black Widow and Hawkeye are S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents, while Captain America will get a vote as leader by...Nick Fury Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.!  I would guess the other Avengers would get honorary S.H.I.E.L.D. Status!

3) If Loki is a villain in, The Avengers, he would most likely recruit powerful enemies to beat THOR and his Avenging Buddies Senseless.  I would hope that...Crusher Creel aka The Absorbing Man, is joined by...The Abomination, and maybe an agency like...A.I.M. or HYDRA!

4)  In the comics, our government was all too eager to create their own heroes.  US Agent, Sentinels and Freedom Force come to mind.

5) Well Cap's Shield is Red, White, And Blue, and only returns when it ricochet's off something.  THOR's Hammer is magically attracted to return, as he turns human, if it doesn't within a minute.  Also, the Hammer is grey and brown, something that will look different enough visually, to both be...Awesome!

6) Cap will lead, and butt heads and arrows, repulsors, Hulk Smashing, etc!

1) I hope Ant Man is mentioned in Avengers.
2) BW and Hawkeye will be in black ops most of the time. Ultimates did a decent job giving something to do to Hawkeye.
3) Loki, new baddie: Skrulls.
4) Serum went to Roth too.
6) Stark will be there. I doubt Marvel would fuck up this overlapping schedules or something worst.

I really REALLY want Tim Blake Nelson to return as The Leader, but I have a dreading feeling he's just going to be an unexplained alibi.

I can't imagine they can shove any more semi-costly names into that cast. Those involved:

AVENGERS

Evans, Downey, Johansson, Hemsworth, Ruffalo, Renner

SHIELD

Colbie Smulders, Sam Jackson, Clark Gregg

VILLAINS

Head Skrull/Probably Name Actor (they're doing this, right?), Hiddleston/Loki

ETC.

Stellan Skarsgaard (confirmed), Paul Bettany (voice of JARVIS - MAYBE), William Hurt (POSSIBLY), Sam Rockwell (MAYBE)

I have heard that Don Cheadle, Gwenyth Paltrow and Natalie Portman are not involved. But that's still a lot of names.

Gabe T, For the...Head Skrull, you do not need a...Name Actor, just one with a big...Voice!  The Kree would be a different story, as they look just like humans.  I would hope that either...Captain Marvel or Ms. Marvel be involved in future...Avengers Assemblings!

1) "Dr. Strange" seems to be moving pretty fast.

2) The same way they handled it for years. Hulk is a wild card, Thor is flighty (will leave at a moment's notice) and Cap is burdened by old world attitudes and responsibility. Hawkeye and Black Widow are more Black Ops and government controlled (If you're sticking with the semi Ultimate take of the movies). They're more dangerous, because they will follow orders.

3) Why make anyone return? It's the Marvel Universe for a reason. Keep the supporting talent that is locked in and then release a bevy of new ideas/characters/setups.

4) The Bannermen from Morrison's Marvel Boy comes to mind. There's also a bevy of foreign aspects, as Marvel might want to introduce foreign characters vis a vis a play on the Nuclear Arms Race. Introduce Captain Britain, Red Guardian, Sabra and so on.

5) The shield is a super metal boomerang. Mjolnir is a little more than a boomerang Hammer. It's one of the greatest weapons in the world that can summon lightning, open portals, generate storms and make its user fly. Plus, there's the whole Arthurian aspect of it.

6) The Chairperson of the Avengers has always been an aspect of the team. If Marvel wants to play up the story elements, make it clear from the onset. It's Nick Fury's show and the others are lucky to be there. They might have a little freedom, but Fury is ready stomp their ass.

But will Samuel L Jackson have the authority to play that role?

Anderson, Well so far...Nick Fury is all...Sound, and far less Fury than the comic character SLJ's Fury is based on.  In the comics, Nick Fury was a one man army.  The film edition yells at a drunken Iron Man to vacate a doughnut, not quite as menacing or scary, from the Marvel Comic version.

Hulk didn't use the Super Soldier serum.

My memory was off, you're right. But weren't they intrigued by the mixture of the gamma radiation and the serum, as evidenced by Abomination? I would think that would be something they would want to try again somewhere down the line. But I dunno, I'm not a reckless top secret government operative in a fiction comic book movie universe.

I've been more or less assuming that this Avengers cartoon is a sort of test template, in which case Iron Man would be in charge and no one else would really want to be there.
