Fucking ouch.  Is that a Maori custom or something?  Couldn't they have just gone with the tattoos again?

Had no idea that Mitchell from Being Human was in the cast.

These days I've gotten to the point where I actively try and avoid getting caught up in pre-release hype and endlessly scouring the internet for the latest bread crumb of info but god damn this video makes me excited.

Can you imagine what it must feel like to be him? The stakes are enormous. This can only be seen as an unprecedented success or a cinematic disaster that dwarfs any previous one.

Yeah, it really seems like a double edged sword for PJ.

I think the movies themselves could well turn out to be better than the LOTR films, because he's learned so much from making those, but his own journey through this may be even more testing than the first time round. Technically it may be easier, since he only has to make two blockbusters this time, but emotionally I'm sure he'll face a few demons on the way.

I think technically it will be more challenging due to the 3D. He's got the experience from TINTIN but this will surely be far more complicated. Swooping helicopter shots, mixing cgi creations with real life not too mention the battles. I'm sure he's up to the challenge, but i didn't need the 3D reminder.

But overall that video brought it all back. Like others I'm trying to quit following pre-release info but this will be the exception.

I just realized that Jackson's probably going to be pressured into post-converting the trilogy into 3D, if he isn't already. Crap.

What? They're shooting in 3D. Hence all the hoopla about shooting on the Red camera and using higher framerates (48fps).

Also I just realized this is the FIRST film that I'm actually really, really looking forward to that's live action and actually SHOT in 3D*.

*I don't count Jackass 3D or Avatar. Jackass because, well, it was just stunts basically not a "film," although if the 3D is anywhere near that good I may actually enjoy it for once. And I don't count Avatar because, well... I wasn't looking forward to it and it's essentially an animated film if you're being honest.

I would think it would be a royal pain in the ass to do forced perspective shots in 3D.

By "trilogy" I meant the original LotR films. The Hobbit is being planned as two movies, I believe.

I was wondering about that as well, though I would love to see the raw footage of forced perspective 3D.  I think it'd be kind of a trip!

Good god. Sorry, Sherman. It pays to read carefully.

I'd never thought of that until now. Yikes.

Some inevitable and unique considerations aside, I doubt there's much difference between shooting the perspective stuff in 2D or 3D. They're using under-slung beam-splitting 3D mounts, so the two sets of images they're recording are only a few millimeters apart from each other. The optical illusions will work the same as they always have for the individual camera-views, and I doubt the 3D illusion will clash. Could be wrong- just my educated guess.

Thing is, I'm willing to bet they go with a lot more face replacement and digital comping tricks than they did 10 years ago.

I'm sure you're right about that.  And if the results are as believable, fantastic.  But I always loved the fact that they did so much with old-fashioned techniques.

You and me both. Techniques that were used in DARBY O'GILL over 40 years before which still blow me away. I love that sort of sleight of hand film-trickery.

No worries. I realized as I was posting it that someone could misinterpret it, but a sadistic part of me likes forcing people to read carefully, so I left it as is.

As for face replacement, I'd have no objection to some more of it in moderation. There are definitely a couple of shots in the original movies in which the Gimli mask is fairly obvious on the little person doubling for John Rhys-Davies. Nothing that yanks me out of the movie, but there's room for improvement.
