VHS covers!

Cool link. One of the covers there reminded me of that old "in the tradition of..." line that some marketers would use for horror movies (if you thought "from the minds that brought you" was weak...). I wonder if anyone ever got sued over making tenuous connections on their video cover to more successful movies that they had no actual involvement with?

PS. Eric Red's Cohen and Tate, nice.

Kind of cool. I'll probably end up posting some of my better boxes(stuff like the Coens/Raimi Crimewave) on their wall.

There was this movie that endlessly fascinated me as a kid in the video store, and I can't for the life of me remember the name. The cover was painted by a well-known sci-fi artist at the time, and featured a dead astronaut half buried(you could see his skull) on a desolate planet with an awesome spaceship overhead. The back of the box had a few screengrabs that made it look like a low budget piece of shit, which it probably was. Still regret never seeing it. The artwork was bitchin'.

Aha! Def-Con 4. Got a 3.8 on IMDb, so it's probably a winner!

I was gonna say that sounds like DEF CON. But you figured it out.

Here's one of my own that I never ended up seeing...

The cover was a cool painting - that as a kid I always associated with MAD MAX - but it was of some kind of robot wearing a leather jacket and biker helmet with a visor, pointing a gun off in the air, standing on top of a pile of rumble or cars or some shit. I don't believe there was anything in the background. In any case, that's the only portion of the cover I recall. Anyone know it?

That sounds vaguely familiar, but I have no clue.

I used to love the cool art that wildly misrepresented the movie inside. On one hand I might feel gypped nowadays by something like that, but it sure beats the hell out of a bunch of floating heads and poor photoshop.

Perhaps the most inexplicable example was this 'reimagining' of Miyazaki's Nausicaa as dubbed by Roger Corman:
