A whole lot of news from the tech side of the filmmaking world.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. $7,500 for the PRO model? My 1080p projector cost like $1400 and it's on the sort of lower end of consumer models.

I take it this isn't meant for home use, right? Is it going to accept HDMI input? I must know more.

The home model is less than a grand, and it's not a projector- just the processing unit allowing theaters to accept/process/playback professional film delivery formats that aren't the JPEG2000 whatever-the-fuck that most digital projection is based on.

I see. Yeah, reading the linked piece now. I was thinking it was a projector. Haha. Makes so much more sense now.

Also, Renn:

I love the idea for this column and hope it continues. I can't speak for too many others around here (though I suspect Nooj will dig it), but I'm all for more of this type of stuff.

The lower price for FCP X is what has me hooked. And it comes with Soundtrack and Motion. For only $300? Yeah, I can actually afford that.

I'll give Apple that, they've been fucking awesome about pricing their pro-level production stuff at truly consumer prices. When they made Logic exclusive to Apple it wasn't long before the whole program was beyond reasonably affordable. Almost "cheap" for what it can do.

joey is right.  I DO dig.

I learned non-linear digital editing by just jumping headfirst into Final Cut Pro during college.  Though I've been using Adobe Premiere more in the past couple of years off and on... $300 for a FCPX sounds like an amazing deal.  First, I need a Mac...

My six year old G5 isn't going to be able to handle this. Hell, it can't even handle P2 card info. Thankfully, my friend has a fairly new MacBookPro. FCPX looks to be my next big purchase...when's it streeting?!

Nope that's JUST the new Final Cut Pro X.  What's happening with the rest of the suite is up in the air at the moment, as Apple's demo was focused SOLELY on FCPx.  They showed some advanced colour correction in-app, so COLOR may be done, and it's functionality folded into FCPx; and that may go for other components of the suite as well- but there are no film facts on this yet, so don't believe any rumour mongering either way.

All we know for sure is FCPx released in June on the appStore for $299.  No Express version available anymore, no upgrade pricing for existing users.  The good news is that if Apple does sell the components of the suite separately, then people have the choice to just buy what they need or want.  If you prefer using AE and have no interest in MOTION, then you don't have to buy it.  If your post-audio workflow involves ProTools or Logic, then you don't need to buy SOUNDTRACK PRO.  It's the same thing they've done with their iLife and iWork suites on the appStore.

This is really no surprise.  Apple have always leaned towards pricing software aggressively [or free, in the case of iLife on all new Macs].  When FCP first came out 10 years ago, the $1,299 pricepoint was INSANELY cheap in comparison to AVID, or other NLEs.

Apple sells software cheap to drive hardware sales.

All we know is June so far.  That means it's between 5 and 9 weeks away from release.

If I were you, I'd sell your tower while it still has some residual value.  All indications were that FCPx was coming, so I took the initiative and sold my both my last two systems [G5 Quad with a Kona card, and a 2009 15" MPB] last month- and got a total of $2,700 towards a brand new topped out 17" MBP.  There ARE people out there still willing to buy these things in good condition.  I used Craigslist and found buyers for everything within 2 weeks.
