BATMAN BREAKS BAD IN DC-ANIMATED YEAR ONE

As batshit crazy as Frank Miller has grown, he’ll always get credit for writing what are commonly considered the ultimate beginning and end stories of Batman, the first of part of that equation being Batman: Year One. A touchstone series, and the basis for much of Christopher Nolans’ take on the Batman mythos, it was … Continue reading

I'll take YEAR ONE over THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS any day of the week.

Usually they have to cut things out or skip some things when they make these animated movies, but Timm claims that they've adapted the entire YEAR ONE story. And hopefully they'll be able to faithfully recreate Mazzucchelli's work. That shot of Batman in the basement looks really good.

Looks really good. I really want to see Mazzuchelli's brush ink lines in this but I suppose that would be a bridge too far for animation.

Those sales figures are a bit of a bummer. For the most part, I prefer all the lower selling movies. :(

Cranston as Jim is INSPIRED. If/when they reboot live-action Bats, I vote for him as Commish.

The two stills look great.  I am happy they are treating this particular adaptation with a bit of reverence.  It's such a fantastic story, and I look forward to seeing Mazzuchelli's awesome art translated into moving animation.

This and Born Again are two of my most favorite comic book arcs.

Cranston is inspired casting.

I haven't seen any of the DC animated movies (not so much into animation), but I'm pretty tempted here.

Rather have The Dark Knight Returns but looking forward to this.

As another fan who thinks Year One has an edge over Dark Knight Returns, I am seriously crossing my fingers for this one. I haven't really liked any of the DC DVDs (except for Under The Red Hood and the Spectre short) so I'm just praying this is an exception.

I think both are great properties that tell different sides of the same story. This is going to be a great addition to the DC Animation division. Marvel seems to be getting on the boat if the new Avengers cartoon is any example, but they really need to get some decent animated movies under their belt

Shamefully never read Year One, DKR was ok but i'm not a big fan of Miller's work.  That said, this looks amazing.

This will most assuredly turn out to be great. Although I don't share the opinion that Year One is better than the Dark Knight Returns*, it still is better than 99% of its competition.

*The whole sequence of Bruce slowly deciding to become Batman again, mixed with the news reports up to the reveal rivals the Doc Manhattan flashback in Watchmen for me, for sheer joy.

The stills look fantastic. I don't know why it never occurred to me to adapt these as animated features vs live action; I think it's because until relatively recently, I couldn't imagine anyone going that "dark" with animated superheroes.

If this works out, I'd love to see an animated DKR, which I prefer over Year One (both are great, though). I'd rather see DKR as a quality animated feature than as a live action one, I think. Especially if Timm is involved.

Never apologize for that one.  That's my favorite AICN meme.  That and the Chicken fellow.

ETA: You also spelled cheats wrong.  Or, you spelled it correctly, but in that infamous review, it was spelled "cheets." Repeatedly.

WTF? Where did you get that? It's been already made?!

That's from a really fun episode of Batman the Animated series called LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT.

If they get Michael Ironside to voice old Batman in the DKR animated movie, I'll be excited.

As great as Michael Ironside is, I'd love to hear Powers Boothe as the old Bats.
