MORTAL KOMBAT!

Thread Starter

Someone had to make this thread.  Though I'm sure you Portal 2 will be taking up most of your time.

But holy shit is this game fun and addictive as all hell!  I was posessed, I tell you!  Beat the story mode in one epic sitting.  I actually have a blister on my thumb!  When was the last time that happened? Not since the Sega Genesis was still being manufactured.  And I still haven't even opened Portal 2 or SOCOM 4 - this game is just so much fun.

I was very disappointed with MvC3, from what I played with my friend and was sort of hesitant on MK even after the killer demo.  But this game Kompletely (I know...) delivers.  For me, it's even better than MKII.  It really keeps all the best things about the Mortal Kombat series and ditches all the bullshit.

Easily the most well-presented story mode of any fighter to date.  Took me about 6 hours.  That's longer than most shooters!  It's over the top and funny and cheesy, though not as excessive and over the top as I would have liked.  They cut out a lot of the lame, convoluted crap (but kept all of the awesomely hilarious convoluted crap).  It appropriately balances out with the deadly seriousness and sheer brutality of the combat.  Also the story itself isn't particularly violent, which is strange.  The ONE fatality that happens in story mode is off-screen!  It's mostly PG-13 blood and gore.  The Arcade Tower and Challenge modes are way more brutal, if only for the inclusion of Fatalities.

The fighting engine is top notch and the combat is really quick.  Probably the fast MK to date.  Though not necessarily as deep or polished as other fighters.  But it's just fucking good ol' fashion fun.

Seriously, pick this up.  $60 for another fighter may seem pretty steep, but it's  worth it.  Does it inject my brain with pure, uncut nostalgia? Sure, but it's still a great game and really damn good fighter.  With the Story Mode, Challenge Tower, Arcade Towers, and online multiplayer, it's got more replay value than any other fighter on the market.

Agreed; this game kicks ass. I got my goodly wife t get me the "kollector's edition."
Having fun with this.

Thread Starter

Yeah, I kinda wish I sprung for the Tournament Edition.  By the time I changed my mind and get it, it was already sold out.  The Kollectors edition looks cool, but to expensive for me for what you get with it.

Decided to make my own fight stick.  I kinda suck at fighters on a regular controller.  Orderd a bunch of stuff from LizardLick.com*, Home Depot and a local lumber place.  Get to use my awesome new trim router.  Plan on making something nice and fancy with which I can commit the most brutal violence.

Anyway, yep this game is awesome.

* Excellent site for fight stick and arcade parts for those who like to make their own.  Very popular, though, since SFIV and MvC3 came out, stuff gets sold out quick!)

Yeah, this game is really great.

Can anybody speak as to whether or not there's a substantial difference between the PS3 and XBox 360 versions (aside from Kratos, of course)?  My roomie has a PS3, and that's the version we're playing.

My favorite of the series. Can't believe how much improved the gameplay is and much stuff there is to do, and yeah, I have to agree that this will keep me playing for a long longer than Street Fighter.

Not sure if there are any differences in the two versions- I've got the PS3 and haven't even tried Kratos yet. One minor difference I know is that if you play in the online tournaments you see your Xbox Avatars milling about watching the battles, versus the PS3 which has mini-kombatats. Huge difference, I know.

Mortal Kombat is very...Kool, indeed!

Slasher, the textures in the stages on the 360 version looks just a teeny tiny bit sharper, but other than that they look completely identical.  Even the models look exactly the same.  And really, the difference is negligible.  You can check out comparisons at LensOfTruth.com

I went with the PS3 version anyway because of Kratos and 3D, which looks really good.  Except most of the pre-rendered cut-scenes aren't in 3D, which is kinda dumb.  There's no loss of visual quality that I could tell with the 3D either, which is something that happens a lot.   No crosstalk, too.  And it's done in a way where people without the 3D glasses can enjoy it, but you still get the full 3D effect with them.

One thing I found out is that if you just know the fatality commands, it will let you do it, whether or not you've unlocked it in The Krypt or not.  Why the hell even put them in there if you can do them anyway?

Seriously excited to play this. From what you guys have said, it seems like this is a total winner.

Not even thinking about picking this up till Portal 2's done, but if nothing else, I'm glad Ed Boon found The Joker's original Fatality a new home.

For whoever was asking earlier, I got this on ps3 and my bro got it on 360. For the differances between Xbox and PS3, the controls definately feel a lot more responsive on ps3 than on xbox. I don't know what it is, but it feels like the 360 is cursed when it comes to fighting games. It was really hard to do any sort of tag combo on Xbox because of the contoller being weird.

I've been enjoying it, although not as much as I thought I would being a diehard MK fan. Or maybe I have been as I played for hours earlier today. I've grown to like it more since playing it on midnight release so maybe next week I'll be completely in love with it :p

Oddly enough my favorite part so far is the story mode. It's still a little cheesy but it feels much more fleshed out. The story feels like a retelling of the first Mortal Kombat movie which might sound blasphemous to some. Dialogue is way better than MK vs DC and Armaggedon btw although I doubt anyone is really playing for the story

Seriously thinking about picking this up tomorrow. Was a huge MK fan in my younger years and was one of those kids who hung around the arcade all night just to play and watch people play UMK3. Haven't bought a fighting game since MK Trilogy on N64....yeah it's been awhile. Never a big Street Fighter fan. MK was just so much cooler to me. And the blood, my god the blood. I've tried all the MvC games and it just never really stuck with me like MK did when i was younger.

The great reviews this is getting along with all of the enthusiasm for it here has got me itching to pick this up when Best Buy opens tomorrow. Between this and L.A. Noire, my XBox is going to get quite a work out over the summer.

That's exactly why I got it for the ps3. Had the same problem, to an extent, with the scott pilgrim game with controls being a little muddy on the xbox. Of course online kombating is out of the question right now which sucks. But there's a lot of fighting to be had offline with the story mode and challenge tower (plus those ladder components). Some of the fatalities feel kind of meh, after ocd'ing the fatality trainer to see them for each character. At least you can earn new ones as you progress through the game.

The game wasn't on my radar at all to buy, but it's one of my favorite purchases this year.
Thread Starter

Yeah, I agree about some of the fatalities.  There are quite a few that are pretty lame.  Take Smoke for instance.  His fatalities aren't that great, but I saw a clip on youtube of one of his that didn't make it into the game.  He grabs Jax by the throat and melts him.  His jaw sloths off and his skin stretches and  liquifies, his robotic arms rip from his waxy flesh.  It looked fucking great.

My guess is we'll have to pay for the really cool ones.  Hopefully the DLC will start coming out soon.  Would like to see more classic costumes and a whole bunch more Fatalities and added Friendships.  I'd love it if they'd add a "True Classic" costume pack that looked like the cheap homemade lycra costumes from the original games.  Like Cyrax would actually just look like a guy in a black sweat suit and Motorcross gear.  Or the Ninjas were palette swaps in black spandex with paintball masks and street hockey shin guards.

The babalities in this game are actually pretty funny, too.

Can't stop playing this thing.  Wish there was a combo trainer, though.  On the harder difficulties, these cheap ass charactere will pull off these crazy 15 hit combos that look awesome and the only way to figure them out is watch yourself get your ass kicked and memorize each individual move then try it out.

Who's everybody's main character?   I've fallen back on Scorpion who kicks all kinds of ass in this game.  He was my favorite in 1 and 2.  Until 3 came out and only used Kabal, but I kinda don't like the way he plays in this one though I have to spend more time with him.

I'm having a lot of success with Johnny Cage, believe it or not.

I love Cage's nut punch. Smoke though is interesting.

Picked this up yesterday and played for about 4-5 hours. Loved it. It only got better the longer I played it. Looking forward to playing again tomorrow when the fiance is at work all day (score!).

Storyline is really corny but I love the way they set up each match. Also, the joy of pulling of a combo you created on your own is really fantastic.

Fav characters to be: Scorpion, Cage and Liu Kang.

Was never a big Liu Kang fan but I always play really well with him. Plus, he sounds like a monkey....which is awesome.

I was in the Krypt last night and that damn demon popped up out of nowhere. I wasn't expecting it and neither was my cat....who jumped about 4 ft. in the air.

One thing my roommate pointed out and HATES with a passion:  The AI is nigh-unstoppable for 3-4 matches, and then basically calls it a day and lets you win.  Personally, I don't mind it a bit.

I usually play on Hard or Expert, and I haven't really noticed that problem.  I know on Medium and Beginner, they'll mostly just stand there, maybe throw a punch or try to land a 4 hit combo once in a while.  But on Expert, they're pretty much always relentless.  For me anyway.

Been trying to get the Arcade Master trophy (beat Arcade Ladder w/o losing a match and using a continue)  I can get up to Shao Kahn, but after that I'm Toast.  He's such a cheap fucking cocksucker. You can't block any of his special moves, which he spams constantly.  His X-Ray attack takes off like 65-75% of your health.  You're hits only take off 1-2% each.  It's ridiculous.

Here's his strategy:

Round One...

FIGHT!

Shao Kahn:  Instant Shoulder Charge-Shoulder Charge-Shoulder Charge - Launching Hammer Attack - Upward Shoulder Charge

Me: Teleport punch to combo attempt.

Shao Kahn: Block.  Shoulder Charge-Shoulder Charge-Stunning Hammer Throw

Me: Dead as fuck in 9 seconds.

As soon as the round starts, he fucking gets you and you can't stop it.

Seriously. Fuck that guy.

Shao Kahn is pretty cheap in this game, as are subbosses who are invincible during certain animations. There are very few frames for optimal attack.

That said, Goro and Kintaro seem a lot easier than before, but Shao Kahn at the end of story mode will induce irritable bowel syndrome.

Yeah, I hate that they can walk through your combos like that.

I really hate fighting Sektor, and to a lesser degree, Mileena.

Thread Starter

Yeah, Mileena's got some pretty crazy juggles that she sets you up with her rolls.  I'm pretty good at nailing a jump before it happens.

So far the normal kombatant that gives me the most trouble on the harder difficulties is Reptile.  He's really good at screwing you up then blasting you with his slime orbs and juggling you for a 10+ hit combo.

And it's worsened by the fact that you have to fight him as Raiden who absolutely SUCKS in this game.

I played on MEDIUM and got super-frustrated with Shao Kahn at the end of story mode.  ARGH ARGH ARGH.

I just kept teleporting and doing the superman attack everytime he threw a hammer or a spear.  One mistake in timing and I was dead.  I made a lot of mistakes...

I don't even wanna try to play this at a higher difficulty.

I have to third, or fourth (fifth?) the Shao Kahn hate. What a fucking cock. Honestly though he's the final boss so whatever right? A few of those tag team two on one fights are way more frustrating. At least they were for me.

Fighting Shao Kahn as Raiden is like taking a pebble to nuclear warhead fight. I've come to the conclusion that I will never beat story mode.

Fitting... as he's a pretty mopey, ineffectual wuss in the cut scenes.  Even Liu Kang gets fed up with him.  Hahah

It's doable. I even did it, and I'm not that much of an avid gamer. That said, it's really a bitch and I didn't figure it out till attempt trillion.

Hey challenge tower 150 is fun. Also digging tag mode.

Also, with custom soundtrack, I pulled out the Mortal Kombat soundtrack and score.

He’s pretty easy if you’re using your main character and know all their big juggle combos.  Still takes me 2 or 3 tries on Expert.

But it absolutely sucks when you have to use somebody you NEVER play as.  I’m on challenge 250 – defeat Baraka, Sindel, and Shao Kahn (who are set to Hard) with one life bar using Shang Tsung.  I’ve never used Shang Tsung at all up until this point.  Needless to say, it is a HUGE pain in the ass . . .

I take it this is only on the Xbox and not the PS3?  Aw...

Aww it's in ps3 too. Aww. Oh look. Aww.

Aw, really!?  Huh, I swear I tried to get it going by using the PS button, but it didn't let me.  Does it have to be done from an in-game menu?

I'm trying to access my music files from the PS3 dashboard (or whatever it's called) while Mortal Kombat is running... but it just tells me that "Music content cannot be played during the use of this game."  Everything I see in Google tells me that the game is supposed to support custom soundtracks.  I wonder what's up.

EDIT:  Scratch that.  I found a message board pissing and moaning about the fact that the final build of the game does not seem to support custom soundtracks.

http://www.trmk.org/forums/showthread.php/18799-Does-MK9-FINAL-build-support-custom-music-on-PS3

It seems that the demo definitely did and people simply assumed the final game would as well.  That assumption simply spread around and became 'fact.'  There was never any actual confirmation from the developer, I guess.  Oh well.  No big deal.

Alright so, Ladder Master...holy shit. I wish I could come in here and act like I'm a Mortal Kombat master but honestly I suck at most fighting games, I lose interest and never learn the uber combos. I'm hooked on Mortal Kombat though and man, that Ladder Master trophy/achievement is taunting me. Running Smoke and Noob as a tag-team I can get to Shao Khan pretty regularly without a loss but he's such a cheap motherfucker I don't see anyway I'll snatch that bad boy. You guys might have gone over this already too but I'm really curious which characters everyone is really digging and why. I've gotta admit before this game I thought Smoke was terrible and that fucking floating hair of his didn't do much to change my gut reaction but he's got some great combos and that fucking puff of smoke he throws on the ground that drops you from the top is awesome. Ermac is pretty crazy and flashy too.

Yeah. Maybe they will patch it. MK vs DC has it.

Have you tried turning the difficulty down to Easy for the final fight?

Late to this party, and I had a strange issue with my game. My MK skills are rusty, so I was going through the tutorial. I get to the part where, as Sonya, I have to defeat Sektor. No problem.

I beat him, then Sonya collapses and I lose. More specifically, as soon I deliver the final hit to him, my remaining health bar plummets, she falls backward, and I fail this section of the tutorial.

The hell? Anyone else have this happen?

ty in advance for any info.

Probably not conpleting something in the tutorial or the game isn't recognizing it.

Yeah, that happened to me too.  I don't recall if I eventually beat it or just gave up, but I think it's the part you have to execute a certain combo on him.  Either that, get in certain types of hits before beating him.

Thought this was pretty great and made me want to bust out MK again. Oh, that Kano.

The Mortal Kombat Sitcom

Freddy Krueger is the newest DLC character for MK.

And it's the reboot one.

Oh, well.  Odds on how long it will take to get the Tall Man into a fighting game?

Who the hell saw that coming? Still, looks fun!

Here's the gameplay trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaSBkBDcepM&feature=youtu.be

Random, but he still looks like a blast to play.

Just tell me Jackie Haley volunteered for voice duty. That would be the icing, really.

Doubtful. No voice-over will keep the costs down, and the last 3 DLC characters didn't do any speaking either.

I really am scared at what his babality could feature.

So anyone spring for Krueger and the others? I'm considering it. Mostly just for Krueger, but the three for the price of four deal has me waiting while I mull it over. The way these things go, I bet one of the non-Freddy fighters is more fun anyways.

It took me seven tries to beat Shao Kahn in story mode with Raiden.  Fuck that guy.

I picked up a used copy of the Mortal Kombat blu-ray. Anyone need a Jade Classic Character Costume code?

I'll give it a home. PM me.

Message sent.

I picked up the classic costumes pack for a party and heavy nostalgia.

Not tempted to pick up the others.
