Damn, I feel bad for the guy now. Really want to get him one of these:

Josh, obviously the 'raped by niggers' stuff doesn't sound good but it was a private conversation. Who knows how scheming and manipulative his girlfriend was? Obviously enough to plan a secret recording.

A bit disingenuous to jump from Braveheart to Apocalypto without mentioning Passion of the Christ. Just saying, but with all the money he personally cleared off that film he can literally afford not to care about a conventional career.

Meanwhile, The Beaver could be the exact right film to rehabilitate his onscreen image. If anyone goes to see it that is.

I get ya, but I don't see what that has to do with anything. I never said that Gibson shouldn't be allowed to make movies anymore. Or that people shouldn't go see his movies. I'm saying that I currently find it hard to passively watch him as an actor without thinking about his personal life. That's why I'm pissed at him. You reap what you sow in relationships and I think that knocking up and dating the kind of sketchy chick who will record your drunken psycho rants was fairly inevitable given the downward spiral he's been on for the past ten years. I have no sympathy for him in this regard.

Not sure what you mean.

The article makes it sound like Apocalypto was the direct successor to Braveheart when it's a film he couldn't have made without the financial freedom (and ideological support) provided by Passion. Also, any analysis of the man's personal views and how they impact his public persona kind of HAS to address Passion.

I also left out MAN WITHOUT A FACE. I was merely establishing the ways in which I dug Gibson in days of yore, as set up for noting my frustration with his seemingly ever-present personal life poisoning said digging, which itself was just set-up for Deadline's interview. I didn't think it seemed like I was offering up any kind of analysis of his career. My mentioning of APOCALYPTO was simply that it was the first film he made where I became more excited by him behind than camera than in front. Maybe it was naive of me to think I could toss off a casual bit of anecdotal B.S. in my intro without stirring the pot. Either way, that was the context.

EDIT: in other words, I don't disagree with you. That's just not why I mentioned those two films.

Gotcha, thanks.

I don't really care about his acting career either way at this point, but for me the most disappointing thing about the whole debacle was the death of his Viking project. A Viking movie in the style of Apocalypto would be quite something.

This I think we can all agree on. It would have been epic. I'm still hoping it will happen some day. Without Leo though. What kind of Viking is that? As a Scandinavian, I was offened by the mere idea.

Joshua Miller, Leo DiCaprio a...Viking?  He wouldn't fit as a member of their...Minnesota cousins either.  Leo, would be more of a...TYKEing, than a Viking!  On to Mad Mel.  He supposedly has been a...Wild and Crazy guy for years.  He also said, that he wasn't sure, he wanted to act past...50.  Whatever he wants to do is fine by me.  He will always be...Martin Riggs, and Mad Max, to me.

... it's okay to be racist in "secret"?

I feel the same way about it. Same with Polanski. And OJ Simpson. Shit, I can't even watch a Richard Gere movie without thinking about gerbils and that one's probably absolute bullshit.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mel ends up deciding to do a commercial project or two (Lethal Weapon 5?)..............................not for the money, but for the ability to gain financing for the Viking flick and any other oddball project he might want to direct.  Hell, last time LW5 was brought up he seemed keen on the idea, providing Donner is behind the camera again.  Apparently the only reason it didn't come together a couple years ago is because Gibson & Glover refused to do it without Dick Donner at the helm.  I just hope that if it does happen, it turns out better than the last two.

S.D. Bob Plissken, I would...Love, to see a, Lethal Weapon 5!  I thoroughly enjoyed...Lethal Weapon 3 and 4, as I thought, Mel Gibson, with Rene Russo as his gal pal, then Mrs Martin Riggs was...Perfect Casting!  While 3 and 4 are nowhere near as great as Lethal Weapon and LW2, I find them...All Kinds Of Awesome!  I also applaud the loyalty of Mad Mel and Danny Glover, for sticking by Richard Donner, when his long time producing partner wanted him out.

I applaud them for it as well.  As for LW3&4, I do enjoy them.  They are just of a different breed and I definitely prefer the first two.

I think the whole thing was pretty tragic, we all have a 'moment' when we are angry, which dosnt make it right. but surly if he was as crazy as this made him seem it would have come out before now? surly?

That was my thought as well. Hardly history's greatest criminal, but I agree it makes enjoying his work (especially his recent work) a little tougher.

Yeah, I was reading his quote and I knew something was missing, but I couldn't remember what.  I guess I haven't been able to completely scrub "the Passion" from my memory.

This is a free country, so yes.  But then it's also ok for me to think racists are pathetic small minded pieces of shit.
