2011-2012 NFL season

Kinda surprised there's not a thread yet, with the Draft only a few days away.

I haven't been as pumped for the draft this year as I have in the past (pick your reason: lockout, my Chiefs drafting a lot lower this year, weaker draft class this year vs last year, etc).....I'm starting to get pretty excited for Thursday. As a Chiefs fan, I want to see who they take. As a Mizzouri Tigers fan, I want to see when and where Blaine Gabbert will go (though I think he is highly overrated, and taking advantage of a weak QB class this year).

Anyways, who do you guys think will go #1?

Who do you want your teams to take?

And here's hoping there is no missed time this year......

The Colts need new talent in the O line, but who knows what will happen.

Cam Newton #1 I'm sure.

MoonBaseNick, By...Odin's Beard, At QB, I want Miami to draft a Mighty...MALLET, Ryan, not...MJolnir!  On suggestions of another OL over a QB...I Say Thee Nay!

Judge just ruled an end to the lockout. Might not last, but here's hoping.

Fleed, I have a friend who works in the scouting department for the Minnesota Vikings. They have really been looking into a lot of the QBs this year. Apparently the word/rumor is that Ryan Mallet has a bit of a drug problem (I think Jon Gruden even hints at this, or at least the rumors, in his Gruden Camp with Mallet, but I'd have to watch it again)......so that may not be the way you want your team to go....

DamnDirtyApe, There are rumors all the time about drug use.  Sometimes they are real, and sometimes they aren't.  Dan Marino had negative things said about him before he was drafted.  I really do not care, about these rumors, I want Miami to draft a...QB #1.  Miami has drafted...3 QBs #1.  They are...Rick Norton, Bob Griese, and Dan Marino!  That is it.  In 45 years only...3 #1 picks, spent on the most important position.  2 of Miami's #1 QBs are Hall Of Famers.  Even if...Ryan Mallet is not the pick, I...Still want a, QB!

I live in Big 12 country (now Big 10), so I don't know much about Jake Locker, but I've always liked him. I've only seen a few of his games, but I like his toughness and leadership. He single handedly won their bowl game vs Nebraska last year, and (as much as I hate to say it) they were pretty damn good, at least defensively. I know his stock fell last year, and is now considered a late 1st / early-mid 2nd.......but I still like him over the other QBs. I don't know where the Dolphins are drafting at, so it might be too high for him. Mallet has a cannon though, and could fit in well slinging it to Marshall and Bess. Best of luck to your team, and I hope you get what you want.

DamnDirtyApe, Who is your favorite...NFL Team?  I would guess that your fave college team is...Nebraska!  I root for...Oklahoma!

KC Chiefs and Mizzou Tigers. Born in Mizzou but have lived in Nebraska for the past 20 years. I am not a fan of the Huskers or their arrogant / whiney fans in the least. Hopefully with Nebraska gone, Mizzou can reign supreme in the North and challenge OU......SOONER that later!

But in all seriousness, glad to know you're an OU fan. Now I'll have someone to talk Big 12 football.....well, what's left of it.

Miami needs to get itself a stud of a QB, I know that's easier said then done but with the Jets starting to come into form, that division can easily slip away from them.  Someone has to be throwing to Marshall! well, besides his wife...ZING!

I kind of wonder what Miami would be like if they would have picked up on Drew Brees instead of passing him up.

Thread Starter

Man, I totally forgot about that. I'll NEVER understand why they took Culpepper and his destroyed knee over Brees and a bum shoulder. Even at that time, I don't think anyone thought that was a good move, did they?....besides Dolphins management, of course....

DamnDirtyApe, Lets see...The Big 12 is now, The Big 10, and The Big 10 is now...The Big 12.  On Miami signing Culpepper over Brees.  It sounded right.  Would you sign a QB with an injured Shoulder?  It could've affected his passing.  Culpepper hurting his knee, seemed like the less problematic injury.  Oh well, that is now...2 Times that Drew "Cool" Brees, could have landed in Miami.  Dave Wannstadt passed on him in the draft, since he had his QB Jay Fiedler!

Always excited for the draft, but it's tempered by the uncertainty of having an actual 2011 season.  Looking for the Steelers to pick up lots of DBs and O-Linemen.

Then I'll need to start working on my draft picks for my Dynasty Fantasy Football teams.

Someone on the Sirius NFL channel made an interesting point yesterday--the majority of folks agreed that Tebow was a huge reach in the 1st round last year, even somewhat late in the first round as he was...so why the hell is Cam Newton being discussed as a Top 5, if not #1, pick?

Thread Starter

I have no idea. They have all the same "strengths": intangibles, strength, leadership, charisma, great athlete. Have the same weaknesses: passing mechanics, accuracy, footwork. PLUS Newton has bonus concerns of maturity and commitment to the game. I don't like Tebow at all, but at least he didn't have THOSE questions. I'll just chalk it up to teams at the top desperate for a QB, the overall weakness of this year's QB crop, and the overall draft class this year is weaker than last year's.

I don't get the Cam newton love.  I do-he has all the physical skills but there are so many red flags.  I take someone on the lines or better yet trade down.

I wish I could care about the draft, but untill they get a deal I'm tuning it out.

Today is the day. Really starting to geek out about it now. I have sand volleyball tonight, and won't get to watch it live.....but I'm DVRing the shit out of it. Best of luck to everyone's favorite team.

Here's a wild "it would never happen in a million years" scenario...

The owners say, "You know what, NFLPA?  Fuck it.  We're going to draft entirely new teams this year, and we'll start over with them and a new agreement.  There are a shit load of college players available, in addition to free agents and the guys in the UFL.  You can start your own league with all the rules you want."

How weird would that be?  The owners build brand new teams from the current crop of college players, and the players form a new league for themselves.

Because a lot of NFL executives are reactionary sheep who don't think for themselves?  That could be it...

So whats the saying? Picking a terrible QB in the draft can set a team back 5 years. When it comes to a QB I'll rather have one hell of a smart one with a decent arm then a guy that can run all over the place.

Everyone questioned Matt Ryan's arm and athelticism and he turned out well. And I even remember the Leaf / Manning debate. Leaf could throw it 60 yards flat footed and Manning only 50 or something like that.....and somehow people thought that made Leaf better than Manning. It seems like they have so long to nit-pick stuff, that they talk themselves out or into a player.

Kinda scared to see what my Redskins do with their first round pick.  I could see them reaching for a QB, but none of these new guys (Newton, Gabbert, Mallet) really wow me and I can't help envision a disaster of Jimmy Clausen proportions should the Skins go this route.  They are just such a mess; they really need to be patching up that O-line and getting some offensive weapons (Julio Jones?) and just keep a veteran like McNabb or (ugh) Sexy Rexy under center.  For now.

Side note:  Its always fun to see that worthless sack of shit Haynesworth in the news. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6437272

"I didn't touch her," Haynesworth responded, according to the document, adding that he doesn't "even like black girls."

And with no free agency (yet), a lot of teams are going to reach more than usual.

And apparently Al Davis, being Al Davis, can't stand not having people talk about the Raiders at any chance. I guess they are desperately trying to make a trade to get into the first round, and they havn't NOT had a first round pick since 1989.....their rumored target of choice is Nevada's QB Colin Kaepernick. So now its just gonna be a matter of time and which smart, savvy, late picking team takes advantage of this idiot AGAIN.

And rumor has Redskins talking to Denver at #2 for Gabbert. So there you go....

I'm wondering what type of year the Raiders will have...They seemed to be on the up and up..but hell, who knows now.

sorry Fuzzy but damn I feel bad for Redskin fans...

Goddamn, what is it about Cam Newton that makes me want to punch him in the face??

Cam Newton thinks he's Spider-Man?

Did the Falcons really give up five picks for Julio Jones?  Damn.

Holy crap! Atlanta's GM better be damn sure about Julio Jones. If this don't work out, then yikes.

People will dog Atlanta for taking Jones and not taking a defensive back, but they can still get someone later in the draft.  Ryan now has Jones, White, and Gonzalez to throw to.  But yeah, that was a lot to give up for him.

Locker over Gabbert?  Interesting.  Project.

So you think the Titans are going to start a rookie at QB?

Someone get Gruden a fucking job.  I can't stand hearing Chucky declare everyone the best player ever.

So AJ Green for my Bengals?  Great, we need a replacement for Ochocinco.  Now all we need is someone to throw to him.

Well, the Bengals still have a Palmer right? right?........

So I guess the Redskins did not want that pick huh...

I'm not putting any money on Jordan being the starting QB.  And not just because I never put money on the Bengals.

I can't believe Nick Fairley fell to us and that Detroit bit. Kind of love it, despite the lack of need. Now we have one of the most pants shittingly scary defensive line.

Dam, Dam, Dam, Dam, Dam Dam!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Dam'n Fools!  Another...OL?  Way to...Blow it new GM Jeff Ireland!  I am very excited for the...4-12, 6-10 Dolphins, if there is a 2011 season.  Ryan Mallett was...There, so were Andy Dalton, and The Nevada QB Colin K.  I am so, disappointed.

You would have been more disappointed with Mallet.  I don't think he's going to be a good NFL QB.

The NFL doesn't know how to evaluate QBs. Hilarious, but true.

Anyone with working eyes could see that Aaron Rodgers was better than Alex Smith. Smith goes #1, Rodgers nearly falls to the 2nd round. It happens over and over.

I'd bet money the TCU QB ends up better than Newton. NFL teams get blinded by the big names on the big stage, ignoring that they're propped up by playing on the best teams against often inferior competition. It'd be easy to look like a great poker player if you got to start every hand with an extra ace.

Yeah, I REALLY hope it works out but this could have "Ricky Williams" written all over it.

And the Browns only gave up a 3 to KC to move up 6 spots......all those picks and the Chiefs only got a 3???? shit....Browns look like geniuses so far.

And goddammit MoonBaseNick.....I wanted Costanzo in KC.....you lucky bastards.

So a general question: What coverage do you guys prefer to watch? ESPN or NFL Network?? Me, I'll take Rich Eisen, Marshall Falk, Mooooch, et. al over the ESPN crew.

I like Mort and Adam Schefter (who foolishly left the NFL Network) but I don't really care for any of the rest.

Don't really understand why the Pats passed on some really defensive players and took an OL instead. They need to shore up that defense.

Was watching NFL Network primarily.  I've gotten to the point where I don't like Berman anymore.  And I like Eisen a lot.

Can't believe Ponder went to Minnesota.  I'll be flying through there this weekend...wonder if they'll have any Ponder jerseys yet...Jimbo Fisher said the Vikings loved Ponder's ability to read defenses and check in/out of packages at the right time.  Hopefully should be a good fit, with a great RB and good players to throw to.

One of the NFL draft guys I was following had Dalton low on his QB list, and it's looking that way right now.  I've got to hit the sack, but I'll be up in the AM to see who the Steelers pick.  Jimmy Smith would be great if it weren't for the character questions...but he'll fit right in with Baltimore (zing!).

Bailey, I wouldn't have been disappointed with the...Pick, of QB Ryan Mallett, as it would have been not only a...Rare Bold move, for Miami, but it would have given them a very good prospect.  It doesn't matter who else, Miami Drafts.  I give them a...F!  Who are Jake Long OT, and Mike Pouncey C protecting?  There isn't a good QB on the roster, and both RBs are at the end of their careers!  Miami will be, at best...6-10, this year.  Maybe, they can be bad enough, that they fire the coach, the GM, QB Chad Henne, and get to draft...QB Andrew Luck, in 2012!  I am...Disgusted, by Miami taking yet...Another OL over a QB!

I got to that point in about 1995.

Yeah. NFL network all the way. I love Mayock and can't stand Berman and Kiper. Is Kerrigan a pur rusher or can he cover? From what I heard he'll be converted to a 34 linebacker. Still happy with the extra pick. Saints are going to be really dangerous on offense next year.

Also, the Detroit D-line is going to be crazy.

Fleed I understand your disgust.  They passed on Ryan Mallet and Dalton. A friend of mine who is a Dolphin's fan was praying that they would take a QB. Is Chad Henne the answer? I would think not,

Panther Fan here, very nervous about the Cam Newton experiment, think it's a bad pick, but wants to be proven wrong...

Good pick up for the Colts in a very needed position. Smart kid with talent. I hope he does one hell of a job.

Well Dirty I hope he's has good as everyone believes he is. :-). Bill Polian regrets passing up on Roger Safford last year who I believe went to KC.

History Buff, Also, Who are LT Jake Long and G/C Mike Pouncey...Protecting?  QB Chad Henne?  Aging, Injury Prone Ronnie Brown or Aged Toker Ricky Williams.  Is...Lex Hilliard the 4th year RB, who has about...10 carries in that span the answer?  A...Veteran QB?  Why would that make...Any difference?  To me, the only QB, I would trade for is...Vince Young of Tennessee!  All the other options are average at best.  It might be better if, Miami goes...4-12, then maybe Owner Stephen Ross, can hire someone that understands the importance of a QB!
