2011-2012 NFL season - Page 2

Safford went to StL, but close. But last year the Chiefs thumpped their chests about taking guys with maybe lesser talent, but high quality character and a love of the game. And their first pick this year is a WR who apparently has a ton of talent, but has character and commitment issues?? It goes against the grain of everything they did last year (which worked out pretty well and they had 5 starters from last year's class). Especially with Costanzo there.....everyone agreed he'll be AT LEAST a solid RT in the nfl, and the dude wants to be a doctor (and apparently has the brains to do it).......if that isn't a Pioli guy, I don't know what is.

I'm just disappointed with what they did. They obviously desperately tried to move down. I'm guessing they got they guy they initially wanted, but at least picked up an extra third along the way.....which means they know they reached. I would have greatly loved to have gotten Costanzo or Ingram (the thought of him and Charles in the same backfield made me drooool)......so unless there is a Pitt fan who can sing the praises of Baldwin, I'm bummed.

I like what moves the Browns and Saints made.

The Lions already good Def Line just got even better. i think Fairley landed in the perfect spot for him, and Gunther probably wet himself that he fell to them.

As a Mizzou fan I was surprised to see Aldon Smith go so high, and Gabbert fall a bit. I think Jax is a terrible fit for Gabbert......but Mizzou-rah got 2 top 10 guys. Well done Gary Pinkel.

Saints are going to have a hell of a RB corps this season, after the emergence of Chris Ivory.  Its kind of weird they even bothered with Ingram.

And the Redskins, after a year of touting Shanahan as this magical RB guru, pass on Ingram to fill a position which was arguably their least problematic.  At least we didn't reach for Ryan Mallett.

Oh, the Rams, you're right. sorry about that.  Having a plan for the draft plan is what I like most about Bill Polian, yes the man is an ass and treats fans like they are morons but hey, at least he can pick some solid talent.  A RT is something the Colts have needed in a long while. Pretty much since 2007.  Manning still only collects about 12 sacks a year but he does that by getting the ball out ASAP. Having more time in the pocket will help things greatly and help with the running game which has been piss poor for a number of years.

Good pick up for the Colts in a very needed position. Smart kid with talent. I hope he does one hell of a job.

Well Dirty I hope he's has good as everyone believes he is. :-). Bill Polian regrets passing up on Roger Safford last year who I believe went to KC.

Hopefully for Peyton (and yourself) he is...FSU's Brandon Jenkins ate him alive when they played BC last year.

A bit disappointed with Pittsburgh picking a DL--I guess after the better DBs and Olinemen got picked up earlier, they went with best on the board for their needs.  I was hoping that Prince or Smith would either fall, or they would trade up a few picks to get one of them.  I mean, if they were going to take a DL, why not take Bowers, unless his knee is just totally shredded.

I would be too.  They used a 2nd round pick on a qb last year and now #1 onevall this.  I wouldn't trust their talent evaluation after picking qb's back to back years esp when Newton has so many question marks.

Detroit will be tough if they have a QB.  The Vikings are nuts.

Thank god the Bears drafted a Tackle.  And a good one too.

I don't get the Bowers fall either. Wasn't he considered a possible #1 overall pick there for awhile??? And to fall out of the first round? ....wow. But I did get tired of Kiper and Gruden predicting every team, from #20 down, taking him.

Also, the Pats seem well on their way to owning EVERY 1st round pick by 2020.....jesus.

The Blane Gabbert trade-up surprised me. It fills me with hope and I'm also encouraged that he doesn't have to start right away like Newton, Ponder and Locker have to.

I expect the Jags to make another deal today to get back into the second round, they have a crapload of 4s to deal with.

As a Mizzou fan, I can say Gabbert is an enigma. Supremely talented, and didn't do a whole lot with it. Chase Daniel had half his natural talent, and got to 2 Big 12 champ games. Gabbert's only claim to fame was finally beating OU (and I admit, they weren't as good this year as they have been in the past). he never beat Nebraska, and never won a bowl game (vs Navy and Iowa) when Mizzou was favored in both. He can be ungodly accurate at times, but then late in games or the red zone.....it's like he's a different person. His final bowl game vs Iowa tells you alls you need to know.....he was having the game of his life, but had 2 costly picks including the inexplicable one in the 4th where he threw it directly TO the defender (my guess was that since Mizzou and Iowa have similar colors......he honestly forgot what jersey they were wearing).

He's brittle but tough. Got hurt a LOT in his 2 years starting, but played through a lot of it.

He's smart and a decent leader, but folds a lot in crunch time.

I do like Gabbert. He's a good guy and will try hard for you guys........I'm just not sure he's a good fit for Jacksonville.

UN-BLEEP-ING, Real, Miami trades...3 picks to get a...RB, when...QB Ryan Mallett is...STILL AVAILABLE!  UGH!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!  The Nightmare continues...Ryan Mallett drafted by...The New England Patriots!  I fully envision, Ryan Mallett...HAMMERING the...Defense of the Next Coach Of Miami, after Tony Sparano gets the hook.

Pats take two RBs in a row?  That's SO un-Bellichick-like.  Strange.
Good to know Mallet won't have immediate pressure and can take some years to develop.

If anyone else had drafted Mallet the narrative would be about how far he'd fallen due to his penchant for throwing bad interceptions in key moments, his character issues, and the fact that he is a statue.  But Belichick drafts him and ESPN is all "is this Brady II??"  Gimme a break.  At best it's Bledsoe II.  (And I say that as something of a Razorback fan.)

Bailey, It has nothing to do with either...Brady or Bledsoe 2.  It does have to do with the fact that Bill Bellichek coaches in the...21st Century complete with a...Vertical Passing Game, and Jeff Ireland believes that the...Horse and Buggy is the way to go.  Ireland is more of a...19th Century offensive guy.  Run, Run, Run, Kick FG, type of offense.  2012, Miami just might have a...NEW, GM and Coach!  I applaud the Patriots for taking Mallett.  Mallett will be...HAMMERING Miami for the next decade, after the retirement of Tom Brady!

I'm not a fan of the Skins draft strategy this year. If you're going to continually trade back to get more picks, great! But then don't go and draft 3 WR's and 2 RB's after the first two defensive picks. Yeah, we picked up a DB but we still need more secondary, d-line and linebacker (although we mainly need depth for this). But we also could really do with some O-Line help and maybe a QB to groom for the future.

The skins should have drafted a QB.

Will the Ravens STFU about the Bears botched trade.  From what I read they did the same thing to the Vikings in 2003 and fucked it up.  Bears will get screwed down the line.  Bottom line is the Bears owe them nothing.

I really wished they had drafted Mallet in the third as there wouldn't have been the need/pressure to need to start a top ten talent. Good luck to whomever we have throwing in the backfield with a nice old O-Line. Sexy Rexy, you're gonna earn that contract!! And I'm with you on the Ravens, shut the fuck up already. You did the same thing and Ozzie even said something along the lines of "The trade was never finalized, fuck 'em."

God I hope so.  Reading about Dalton, they say he did well because he had a great line and faced inferior defenses.  After looking at the Bengals' line, and the defenses of the Ravens and Steelers, I hope this kid makes it more than a year before we have some repeat of what happened to Palmer in 2005.

Despite my initial griping, I'm kinda happy with the way the Skins drafted.  They showed some restraint and weren't just reaching for the big names and quick fixes.  Its gonna be a building year, and we just need a reliable placeholder at the QB slot - Rex or McNabb (who may not have many other choices due to the lockout) will be just fine in that regard.

The Hokie in me would have liked to see them grab Tyrod Taylor.  No way he'll ever be a stud, but I'd like to see him after a year or two of working with a veteran like McNabb.

Well, on the plus side..Rex can be a decent QB.

fuzzy dunlop, I was...Incredulous watching, ESPN, as one of their reporters said...John Beck has a chance to be the Starting QB of...Washington!  Miami, did both draft and cut Beck.

What a...Horrible draft for Miami and...NO QB!  I do not mind that they selected a...Guard, WR, RB, FB, but that they didn't draft a...QB.  Miami has done the Free Agent/Journeyman approach before, and they ended up with...Stiffs!  They have not drafted a QB #1 in...12 years!  Heck, not only could they have drafted Dalton or Mallett, they had a chance at...Several good prospects.  Seriously, the only veteran I would trade for is...Vince Young.  He might be a problem off the field, but he can be explosive on it as well.  I definitely do not want...Kevin Kolb, Carson Palmer, or any other lesser QB.  They might as well stick with, Chad Henne, which might have been their plan from the start.

Also, Miami traded up to get...Daniel Thomas a solid but fairly slow RB.  As an...Oklahoma fan, I cannot believe they passed over, Demarco Murray!  A...2 way RB/WR/KR that just...Explodes for big chunks of yardage.  Dallas fans should enjoy watching him for several years!

Umm, yes please to this rumor. Snortin' Orton, come on down! Come on, do it Denver, we already payed him the lions share of his contract!

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/tag/_/name/2011-nfl-draft

The rumor mill in Denver is already spinning a Kyle Orton-Albert Haynesworth trade. Washington needs a quarterback and Denver needs defensive tackle. Makes senses, would Denver want to pay Haynesworth?

Thread Starter

Wow, that'd be all win for WAS. Denver would be stupid to do a straight up trade like that with those 2. But as a Chiefs fan.....the sooner Orton leaves the better.

Yes please!  I'd be happy to trade him for Brady Quinn.  Whatever gets Haynesworth out of here.

Jesus H. Christ, who in their right mind would trade for Albert Haynesworth. If I'm the Redskins I'd trade him for an Applebee's gift card just to get off my hands.

Fleed, don't want to start off your week on a crap note, but Mel Kiper was on Mike & Mike this morning and he said Miami really liked Mallet and tried to trade up to get him, but couldn't work out a deal in time. I can't remember how early or late in the 3rd round he went, but sounds like they rolled the dice on him falling and just missed him.

DamnDirtyApe, I did hear that...Song and Dance.  Miami had not one, but...TWO, chances to draft Mallett.  When they traded up to get the Kansas State RB, not only was...Mallett available, but Oklahoma RB DeMarco Murray was available as well.  As a result of this draft, I no longer care about Head Coach Tony Sparano or GM Jeff Ireland's  opinion on anything.  I would not even mind a...4-12 season, so these clueless so called...Talent Evaluators, can be replaced by a better Head Coach and GM Combo.  I will always be a big Dolphin Fan, but I hope that, 2011 is the last year, Sparano and Ireland work for the team.

Fleed, is Jeff Ireland the same guy that lied about his resume when he tried to get the Notre Dame head coaching job??

History Buff, When was that?  I read, that Ireland joined the Dallas Cowboys in...2001!  He began as a scout.  I am not sure he ever was a coach.  I am sure that he didn't want a QB at all.  Sparano said, the team filled their needs in the draft.  If that is so, Miami will be in trouble, as their other QB is a Free Agent.  The first ever QB at Coastal Carolina...Tyler Thigpen.

Probably not the same guy then. I recall a certain 'Ireland' completely faked his resume while trying to get a head coaching gig at Notre Dame. But it may not be the same person. And as far as the Dolphins go, they appear to making moves that make no sense. They have no QB worth a damm. So its probably going to be a long season/.

That was George O'Leary. i believe he is the current college head coach of UCF.

I like how the Pats traded down to NO who took Ingram, and then...took a RB... um

I'm hearing this all over the place now too.  Yikes.

I think this year will be the final straw for Shanahan. He has coasted off the success of his back-to-back Superbowl years, and he wears that "Offensive Genius" crown a little too proudly for my tastes. There is a thin line between arrogant and brilliant.......Belechik walks that same line, and has so far stayed on the right side (and will as long as he has Brady). Shanahan hasn't. he hasn't done anything since losing Elway and Davis. His last smartest personnel decisions were drafting Cutler (though this is debatable), and trading Portis for Champ Bailey (though Den has STILL not found a RB to successfully succeed Portis). The way he handled McNabb and Haynesworth last year seems to demonstrate someone who is drinking too much of his own kool-aid. We'll see what he does with this John Beck cat, or this may be the end of a coaching career.*

* I have to admit, as a Chiefs fan, I am biased against Shanahan, and hope he fails......but not at the expense of an entire team.....unless that team is the dirty Broncos, then screw 'em!

I think Shanny is more interested in making his son look good as the offensive coordinator (which is clearly not working out either).  He kind of seems like hes sleepwalking through this Redskins gig.  Reminds me of when Joe Gibbs came back.

Thread Starter

Yeah,I really thought he'd be a good hire for Was, but it's obvious he can't put his ego and personal agendas aside.

We'll see... McNabb and Haynesworth turned out to be terrible signings.

I think this just shows that every coach is only as good as his QB.

Supposedly sides are close--now there may be in-fighting amongst the owners about some changes other owners have proposed that the NFLPA has agreed to.

On another note, Wonderlic scores are coming out--RB Jeff Demps and WR Chris Rainey "lead" the way with a 5 and a 6, respectively.  LSU QB Jordan Jefferson had a 12.  Interestingly, Dan Marino scored a 13, and Ryan Fitzpatrick a 48.  So take that as you will.

I took a practice test and you have to be an idiot not to score the average.  Just skipping the "harder" ones should get atleast a 25.  I'd worry about the single digi guys.

Allegedly, Smith is contacting the player reps to let them know the details of the deal, which likely means they're extremely close to getting something done.  Maybe another week or two.

They're meeting for like 5 days in row to get a deal done. Apparently they want this done so they can announce a deal by or on 4th of July. See, Football, 4th of July, Patriotism, Apple Pie, How American!!!

Rumor Mill tidbits:

*  Arizona working a trade with Cincy to get Carson Palmer in exchange for Beanie Wells, since it looks like Benson will probably go elsewhere.

*  Minnesota is still trying to figure out how to get Donovan McNabb, even though they drafted Ponder in the 1st round (who is running that show over there? Jeez.).  Also may consider Orton if Denver wants to trade him.  Although there is a developing situation where Tebow may not even be in the hunt for the QB position in Denver in 2012, which leads me to...

*  San Fran is still expecting to be in a position to draft Luck in 2012.  Kaepernick is back up option if that doesn't work out.  Denver may also look at trying to get Luck (Stanford grad Elway likes him some fellow alum QB meat)

*  Oakland is highly interested in Terrelle Pryor.  Figure there's no chance of Jamarcus Russell Pt 2 because he'll come out of supplemental draft and cost probably no more than a couple of million

*  Philly may land Asomugha at CB, and are considering bringing in Vince Young as b/u to Mike Vick, if they can trade Kevin Kolb

*  And speaking of Kevin Kolb, Dolphins are looking at trading 2012 1st rounder for Kolb.

*  Jimmy Clausen is also being tossed around as being traded since the Panthers drafted Cam Newton.  God help you if your team trades for him as a starter, IMO.

Supposedly talks are almost finished and documents are being prepped to end lockout and get a season going.

Those are  a hell of some rumors.

Bengals' ownership are among the most stubborn ever, I don't see them trading Palmer.

Eagles should trade Kolb and get something for him before its to late.

I don't know who the hell is running things in San Fran. Maybe Harbaugh can get something going but  right now 49ers look pretty pathetic.

Martianman, WOW!  That would be...Perfect!  First, The Eagles, sucker Miami with...A.J. Feeley, and now they get a...#1 Pick for Kevin Kolb!  What a...Disaster, that would be.  I do not want...Kolb at all.  With him, Miami might just go...4-12, and have to give up a chance at...Andrew Luck, for yet...Another Journeyman!

Fleed, Kevin Kolb is a universal upgrade compared to what Miami currently has. Everyone is gonna want Andrew Luck-he'll almost certainly be the first pick-but I don't think the Dolphins will have the worst record in the league. So Kolb is your best bet.

History Buff, No, I have seen him play.  He would...Not, be an upgrade.  Just another journeyman.  Kevin Kolb is the type of qb, that makes Chad Henne look...Better!

I feel like Kolb is better than people think.  Andy Reid was more than ready to hand over the reigns of that potent pass-first offense to him.  He may not be Mike Vick, but in the right offense (maybe Arizona or Minnesota), I think he'll be pretty damn good.

fuzzy dunlop, Kolb would be better off in...Arizona!  I wouldn't mind if Kolb was on...Any other team, than Miami!

I don't understand how people could say Kolb is no good. The guy has barely been given a chance to play, and when he has he's looked pretty good. I could be totally wrong here but I'm thinking the Eagles will regret never giving him a chance and Kolb leading another team to the playoffs.
