Guy's, I'm really really sorry for this. I understand many a people adore it on here, even the uber sexy RRotten, but... I had waited over a year to see this, and having just watched it the other night I have come to the conclusions that... it was fucking awful.
There is so much potential there, Zombie isn't an idiot, but the film seems too tried and tested, and feels as though the better stuff was cut out to give it its Rating. Wasn't this at one point so bloody that it couldn't be released?Or was it that the producers just thought it sucked?
Eitherway, there were a few thing's that I liked:
-Spaulding needs to get his own spin off. He is such a cool character and natural in the part. For House2, Zombie could turn him into classic horror movie status of Freddy, Jason, Michael, etc. I really think he is that good.
-Dr.Satan is an awesome name and a scary looking character. The scene in which we see him cutting into the boy's head, just as the uber soldier-like mammoth walks in put the shits up me. Speaking of which, that mammoth was cool too.
-I loved how colourful it was. Zombie made it attractive looking, even when we were in dirt territory by injecting lots of colours into the scene.
However, some of the bad things were:
-The lass who played Baby was terrible. Very nice to look at and with an arse that deserves its own movie, but Zombie wrote her character too cliche. Laughing all the time? Giggling at the slightest thing? Acting like a child?
-The ending. Oh wow, he was lying in the back seat of the car on the white leather seats all dirty and she couldn't even see him. Yeah, it made me jump, but a split second afterwards I thought "Why the fuck didn't she see him?"
-The "BOO!" scare moments. I'm getting tired of these coming up in films. You don't have to scare the audience by making them shit their pants at the sign of Fluffles the pooch jumping out of the closet* after we think it is a massive monster.
-How derivative it seemed. Shirley I'm not the only one who throught of TCM when they watched this?
Anyway, that is enough ranting. I want a Directors Cut, which literally is a Directors Cut. Stuff taken out and stuff thrown in. As it stands, House of 1000 Corpses isn't the worst horror film that I have seen if late. But if I hadn't seen They, it may well have been.
*Naturally, that didn't happen in the film but you get my point.
