Just watched both movies via Netflix Streaming and highly recommend both. I agree that Part I was the better, more engaging film overall, but Part II is more interesting.

Mesrine may not dive into Cocaine a la Scarface, but he becomes addicted to an even more intoxicating drug: Fame. Having jettisoned or lost all family and friends as shown in part I, his whole identity becomes tied up in his Media image (or his Reputation if you like). That image is self created, and feeds into his ego in a positive feedback loop, until he undertakes more outlandish and vicious crimes, simply to feed that image. That's why he acts out on the reporter the way he does. That reporter hit him where he lives by questioning his image. Which makes me wonder if the reporter was put up to the job by the French Anti-Crime head who pursues Mesrine.

Also the actresses in these films are some of the most beautiful women I've ever seen.

Oh yeah Vincent Cassell is great too. He does the Diniro Growing Belly trick for Part II, and does it well! In fact the entire cast is great.

Definitely a must see!
