Why has'nt someone snapped up Anno Dracula?

Anno Dracula by Kim Newman is one of the coolist series of vampire novels i've ever read, for those not in the know it is a fan boys wet dream, vampire characters from other books turn up, characters like sherlock holmes, jack the ripper and Dr. jeckyl all turn up. I've heard rumblings that a studio has optioned it, but with the current vampire maddness going on, I would have thought the idea of another vampire franchise would have the studios foaming at the mouth...

Because it's very League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (though predating that series), and that was a notable flop?

you think? i understand what your saying, but i would have thought enough time has passed. having said that, there was a hell of a lot of time between vut throat island and POT.

It's hard for me to judge how well the story would work for the average film-goer, who might be somwhat familiar with Dracula and have a vague idea that Jack the Ripper was a serial killer a long time ago, but for whom the literary, film, and pop culture references would be completely lost. I love the book, but does the novel work as well when you can't I.D. Lord Ruthven or Graf Von Orlock? It seems to me there's a ton of nerd shorthand here that just wouldn't translate to a mainstream audience.

The Historian works great as a straight up sequel to Dracula. but the real question is, why hasn't anyone made a proper Dracula movie yet? Francis Ford Coppola has come the closest since Nosferatu, but his Dracula is full of flaws.

FFC's Dracula is fantastic, yes it has its flaws, one of them being Keanu. But to this day, if you ask someone what is there fave vampire film, and most will answer Bram Stokers Dracula, and for good reason. Now as for Anno Dracula being to high in the geek front, i think that would be the magic of it, you may miss 5 references for every 1 you get, but thats the fun with films like this.

I would love to see the Anno Dracula series made into films. The Bloody Red Baron needs to be made so I can see giant bats fight bi-planes. I can see Ewan McGregor as Beauegraud and Eva Green as Dieudonne. I know that she was turned at 16, but do you really want to see a 30 something year old man hook up with a teenager?

I don't mind Keanu Reeves as Harker. I've read the book and Harker is a boring one dimensional character. It isn't a role that requires a master thespian.

Yeah, and that reason happens to be that they haven't seen the genuinely great vampire films.

Keanu is the least of that films problems. Francis Ford Copollas decision to add a love story between Mina and Dracula, and also to create a origin for Dracula and vampires in general are the two biggest problems. And those problems are magnified by the fact that they otherwise try to stick to the book, Dracula is actually a great book which would make a great movie if a filmmaker would just leave the story alone.
Not to mention Anthony Hopkins hamming it up as Van Helsing, he seems to exist in an entirely different movie from the rest of the cast.

This has been scientifically proven false.  The Historian works great at absolutely nothing.

I'm pretty sure that "fact" isn't even vaguely true.

lol Evi, my 'facts' are always lab tested and 100% spot on. Maybe. Actually I did a poll asking people to name their fave vampire film, out of the 600 people that answered over half named Bram Stokers Dracula, the next closest was The Lost Boys, the rest was made up of just about every other vampire film ever, lol

We live in a world where a large swathe of western kids under 17 barely know who Osama Bin Laden is - the concept behind the story mentioned here, in this day and age, is depressingly 'niche' at best.

The Historian is dreck, the same goes for the "official" sequel, Dracula: The Un-Dead. Haven't read Anno Dracula. Curious, but if any of these other attempts to expound on the mythology are indicative, I don't have high hopes.

Fact: The 1977 BBC version of Dracula with Louis Jordan is the best filmed version, Dr. Who production values and all. Stephen King agrees.

sebastian, try to track it down somewhere, its currently  OOP but you should be able to find it on eBay. Dont think of it as a Dracula novel so to speak, although the big man plays a large part, its everyone and everything thats in it that makes the book/s.
