For what?  I'm legitimately curious - I must have missed a story somewhere.

White had his entire part cut from Kill Bill. Not a huge role, but it was a fairly complex action scene.

I have no idea how I didn't know that.  Or maybe I did and just forgot.  Either way...

And here it is...

Fantastic.

Yeah, fun scene. It's worth reading QT's original draft to enjoy the never-shot Yuki's Revenge chapter that got excised in favor of O-Ren's origin (which was awesome and a joyous surprise.)

Fan-fucking-tastic. How the hell is this the first time I've watched this?

I bring much shame to my ancestors.

No mention of Will Smith? I know Tarantino is known for rejuvenating careers, but how about challenging actors that have coasted too long on charisma and good looks alone?

Also, when it comes to white directors handling "black stories", just look at Glory and The Color Purple.

Clarke Peters was the start of something insightful, and then it just got weirder and crazier and a hell of a lot funnier. I was fucking pissing myself when I saw that seductive Philip Michael Thomas photo, and the odyssey that led to Urkel's mugshot, Della Reese, Kid n' Play, Meschach Taylor, and C. Thomas Fucking Howell was only funnier.

I don't want to completely cop your brilliant post, but it inspired me to post some other suggestions for the role, if I may. First, the clear choice:

Not really an "Official Rule" but let's try to keep the big Image Explosions to a minimum in discussion threads - especially if they're going to be quoted.

That said - I wasnt to keen on the idea of Will Smith when it was first mentioned, but I'm kinda coming around to it.  Though casting the Last Great Movie Star to headline your film doesn't really seem like QT's MO...which is kinda precisely why it makes sense.

Pack of Blacktors all up in this thread. Speaking of...

Mel Gibson as the villainous slave owner!

Can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet, but what about Jacky Ido, who played Marcel (Shoshannah's lover) in Inglourious Basterds? We all know that QT likes to reuse actors (case in point, Christoph Waltz is in this) and Ido is around the age I imagined for this role. While a mentor (Waltz) doesn't always have to be older than the mentored, that's just the way I assumed it would be. Also, he's going back for his wife, not his wife and kids and grand kids, which most of the actors mentioned in this thread would have to do, especially considering the young age at which slaves were expected to reproduce.

Jacky Ido is an excellent choice.

How come Eamonn Walker hasn't been mentioned yet? You people are seriously letting me down. He'd kick ass so hard in this so hard that he would break windows two blocks away from where the movie will be playing.

Oui!

Also, that deleted sequence from Kill Bill Vol. 2 is fun, but I remember being let down by it when I finally saw it on DVD.  I'm glad the scene was left out.  I'm sure it's because it's out of context, but it plays flat for me.  "You bas-ted..."

As excited as I am for Tarantino's next film, I have to say that I'm a bit conflicted about its existence.  I have a friend who has a screenplay written that deals with similar subject matter.  I've read it.  It's a really lean, mean, and totally old-school.  Last I heard about it was back in 09 when the script had been sent to Jamie Foxx, Don Cheadle, and Terrence Howard's people.  I know Tarantino's had a film like this in mind for a while, but it really sucked for my friend's script when it was first hinted that it would be his follow-up to Basterds.

But still... SO EXCITED.

Love this idea but what about his Blood and Bone co star MJW? I could buy him as someone who could rign down upon some honky sucka with great vengeance and furious anger

If not what about Wesley Snipes? I realise there may be some legal difficulties but goddamn it would be good to see him get a QT comeback

DOH!

I done goofed!

Apologies to Barry Woodward for throwing around his casting suggestion like it was my own.

I should really read threads through before I comment..

The role is so perfect for Anthony Mackie, and he's just at the right point in his career to play him.

I think its a brilliant spin on what he did in Res. Dogs and Pulp, instead of bringing floundering actors back from the dead, he's taking successful mega stars and pushing them...of course Pitt was already adept at playing against type, but I see this as just the push Smith needs to get back on the road paved by "Ali".  I like Smith, I think he's a good actor who can be great when the material and director are right.

But the role of Django practically begs to be played by an actor ready to bust out into stardom.  Not the guy who is already the biggest movie star in the world.

As stated earlier, Michael K. Williams is the clear choice. Omar was a fairly small role but Williams went a long way in making him ICONIC & that's what Django needs to be.

I love how no one here has even read the script, but seems to be an expert on what Djano needs to be.

Too true, I misspoke. I'd just like to see Omar in a BIG role.

Satisfied, guy?

I'm just positively giddy at the thought of seeing some deliciously over-the-top, scenery chewing southern slave owners get what's coming to them!

I didn't claim to be an expert, but I read the script.

Same here.  I just don't see Smith in the role.  It's not that he COULDN'T pull the character off.  He could.  I just can't see him WILLING to do what the role entails.....................namely the language (the N-word) and committing the violence minus the wisecracks.  If Smith actually signs up, then he might just get that Oscar he's been chasing.  If not, QT will move on to an actor willing to play it as written.  He's done it before.  After all, Quentin will be more worried about the character he has written about and less about who plays them.  It's not like he's always gotten his first choices.

First of all, Smith's comedy chops would actually benefit the part.  Django is funny.  Second, I feel like it has to be a given that Smith will play the part as written.  I mean, nobody would be enthusiastic with the suggestion if he was going to go off and demand changes.

I didn't say he would have the role changed.  I just said I'm not sure if he would be willing to play the role as written.  If he isn't, then Quentin will move on.  As yes, Django is funny.  He is also deadly serious at the end.  Again, I'm not saying Will Smith can't do everything the role entails.  On the contrary, he'd be excellent in it.  I'm just saying that I'm not sure he would be willing to go down that road.  I hope he does though.

Without getting into details, any particular actor you thought would make a good Candie?  I had trouble coming up with anybody good.  I guess I thought of Billy Bob, but that's probably wrong.  (The guy is such a weasel, I actually imagined Billy Zane... but I wouldn't actually want him within 100 miles of that part.)

After reading a review of the script, and reading the script itself I can't help but read Candie as Keith Carradine, since that review said that he's up for a role. If he's up for Candie, he'll do a damn fine job of playing a degenerate with delusions of grandeur.

Keith Carradine would be perfect for the role of Calvin Candie.

What I find more interesting is Sam Jackson supposedly being up for the role of Candie's black manservant.  While Jackson can pull it off, he isn't who I was picturing in my head for the role.  I kept seeing either Jim Brown or Fred Williamson.  The role I pegged Jackson for in the script is not the one he is being rumored for.

On another note, while it is completely obvious that the German bounty hunter was written for Christoph Waltz, the character himself kept reminding me of Franco Nero's role in Companeros............which was awesome because that is one of my favorite spaghetti westerns!

Interesting... it seemed to me Stephen was written with Jackson in mind almost as much as Schultz was written for Waltz.

I'm sure Carradine would be great as Calvin, I guess I was just picturing someone a little more theatrical/over the top in the part.

I think part of me not think of Sam lies in the fact that he hasn't done much "acting" in recent years.................merely just playing himself in most of his roles.  Rest assured, if he is cast he will bring his A-game.

I also think the oft-rumored Treat Williams would make a great Calvin Candie................as well as in another role that hasn't been mentioned yet.  Hell, that script is littered with supporting and minor characters that will give a bevvy of actors (be they QT regulars or not) some great little scenes.

I think it's a measure of QT's skill as a writer and director that I can see just about every actor named above working really well in the part. While the part of me that roots for the underdog would love to see an unknown or relatively unknown actor win the role, I'm also jazzed to see what QT would bring out of Smith. Smith's played it safe a lot and relied on some LCD-pleasing schticks, but I also think he can actually act, and I'd welcome a chance to see him get down and dirty with the role.

Below is exactly what I'm talking about. There's really no point in trying to fan cast Tarantino movies because the guy utilizes his cast well. I don't even consider Eli Roth and Mike Myers "black mark" choices, either. As much as I'm let down by Death Proof, I still can't really imagine anyone else in those character roles.

I remember reading somewhere that Nicky Katt was up for a big part.

Has anyone that has read the script got any ideas on the character he could be playing?

He's great and deserves some bigger parts, Ive been a fan since the  double whammy of 'Way of the Gun' and 'The Limey'

Oh good, more pictures!

By the way, other than perhaps Hans Landa, would there be any Tarantino part more distracting (and potentially tasteless) for Mel Gibson to play than Calvin Candie?

Nicky Katt could play Billy Crash. Shit, he could be any of those dirty hillbillies. I love how Candie goes on a rant about how worthless they are.

I read Stephen with Samuel L.'s voice, so I could see him doing that, but Fred Williamson/Jim Brown/Richard Roundtree would also be superb picks.

Lara Lee- Kim Dickens?

Kevin Costner and Daniel Day-Lewis would both be awesome.............................but both have other projects filming around the same time (Superman, Lincoln).  I'm pretty sure Bridges will be booked as well.

As for Stephen, I just viewed the character as being older than Candie.  Picturing Carradine in the role, I just ended up gravitating more towards the Brown/Roundtree/Williamson age group for the character.  Not really giving anything away, I kinda pictured Jackson as taking the short-term narrator role in this, like he did in Basterds.

I pictured Patricia Arquette as Lara, but that's probably because I had just watched True Romance before reading it.

We really need some sort of spoiler-acceptable thread for this.  Some sort of "DJANGO UNCHAINED POST-SCRIPT RELEASE" thread.

Agree with you there, Bob. We don't want to spoil too much here.

I was imagining Uma Thurman as Lara, but that's just because she's Tarantino's go to lead actress. I did like the name of one of Candie's girls, as it's a homage to a Pam Grier film. Plus the way she's described, I just imagined this girl. K.D. Aubert.
