What Movies have shot near you?

I understand this is a bit silly, but I think its pretty interesting to talk about. What films have shot near where you live and have you gotten a chance to look at them during production? What were your coolest experiences and stories?

I understand there are people who are currently near the Avengers shoot, and people who were around  battle los angeles in new orleans and the big recent one was Michael Bay performing sexual favours so he can take control of chicago for a summer.

For example Repo Men, The Incredible Hulk, Kick Ass and resident evil 2 all shot in my hometown of Toronto.

The second RE film was interesting because it shot a lot of the interiors in a school literally down the street from me. And they were all hanging out, waiting for generators during the black out. I caught a glimpse of someone working on nemesis' gatling gun.

Also Prometheus is shooting in Toronto (it has the largest soundstage in the world I think, or at least North America). I've been trying to get my dad to use contacts (he works as a director for children's cartoons, but knows a lot of people in other facets of the industry, mostly effects guys), so far nothing.

Also a little while back, he almost got us into a screening of an unfinished workprint of The Thing prequel. Unfortunately that fell through

So what are your stories?

From when I lived in North Jersey: Spielberg's War of the Worlds, the intersection where the first tripod rises out of the ground is maybe 6 blocks from Newark Penn Station. On top of that, I just noticed last week that there's a split second in Catch Me If You Can where Leo's running to a train station to buy a ticket to get out of New Rochelle, it's actually a train station in Orange.

Bay filmed some of the China scenes from Transformers 2 about one-half mile away from my office.  There were helicopters with Chinese characters buzzing all over and the walls of my office literally shook from the concussion of explosives.  Sadly, no Megan Fox.

Well, I live in Pensacola, FL. Not exactly a beacon of film production or anything else interesting. Although we do seem to breed exceptional athletes which is kind of odd (Emmitt Smith, Roy Jones Jr., Derrick Brooks, and a shitload of others). Maybe it's boredom combined with our exceptionally shitty drinking water (worst in the states!).

But Jaws 2 was filmed here (Navarre and Pensacola Beach, specifically but it's basically all the same). I've attended many a shitty birthday party/team sports end-of-season party at the Holiday Inn on the beach that's featured at the beginning of Jaws 2. And almost all of it is shot on our beaches (barring the bits that are obviously up north).

We're also really close to Seaside which is where The Truman Show was filmed. I went down there for an afternoon when they were shooting that. The little town/village on the beach really is about as surreal as it seems in the film. They did little to alter it.

Also a small part of Red was shot here.

Can't think of much else. And no, since it's all on your minds, the amazing cable series "Pensacola: Wings of Gold" was NOT filmed here, believe it or not. And I consider that a point of pride.

Uh... District 9?

Northern Jersey here too, much farther west though.  I'm right near Blairstown and have spent plenty of time tromping the grounds where FRIDAY THE 13TH was shot.  To add to this prestige, TOXIC AVENGER was shot a block from my high school.

Child's Play 3 was shot at a military academy in Boonville MO, which is only about an hour and change from me.

About an hour and a half's drive away from me is where they shot the moor scenes and exterior of The Slaughtered Lamb in AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON. Need to take a scout out there sometime and check it out. Sandford from HOT FUZZ is about an hour in the opposite direction.

Finally, a thread I can unload my Speed story on!

In 1993, Speed was filming on the yet to open 105 freeway in Bellflower, CA. I was 16 & snuck onto the closed freeway with a buddy. When confronted by security I said I was a grip & walked around the set straightening orange cones. For about an hour we watched as a bus, loaded with scaffolding bearing cameras, ran up & down a stretch of the freeway. Somehow we got a hold of the call sheet & were rapping our brains trying to figure out who this "Sandra Bullock" chick was.

At the end of the day, as Joe Morton was helping the other actors up on their 20th Century Fox bus, I walked up to him & we chatted a bit. I told him he was great in Brother From Another Planet & the short-lived series Tribeca. He signed an autograph & wrote "break a legend". Super friendly guy. He thought I was a grip too & left with a "seeya tomorrow!".

A few yards away by the trailers, Keanu was signing autographs for a gathering of fans standing behind a barracade. I walked up to him & we chatted a little bit about his time working with Bertolucci. He said it was "...the most artistic experience of his life". Keanu was super nice as well.

When they were shooting Ghost Ship, I could see the actual real section of the front of the ship from my house, very cool. They also filmed the JCVD version of Street Fighter near where I lived. And now I live in Brisbane, I walk the streets of some of the areas from Daybreakers every day. Good times.

The Farrelly Brothers LOVE to shoot here (RI is so small I consider anywhere in RI to be near me). So There's Something About Mary, Me Myself and Irene, Dumb and Dumber, all here in part.  Also Amistad (I was a messy discheveled extra with no screen time...but still fun).  Meet Joe Black showed some amazing shots of Newport.  The best though for a local was Outside Providence which was shot 2 miles from where I currently live.  Seeing that is like having a fun inside view into the movie.

In Superman: The Movie, when Clark and Lois are pulled into the alley by the mugger, they're right across the street from my childhood apartment building. The alley scene itself was likely a soundstage, though.

Parts of No Country for Old Men, Book of Eli, and Terminator: Salvation were filmed within viewing distance of my office window. Albuquerque is pretty much Mad Max 2.

I live in NC, but since I have a lot of family in Savannah, GA, I love watching stuff that's filmed there to see the places I know. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil was done right down the street from my grandparents' place, and you can see their house in a few shots.  All the stuff in Forrest Gump where he's on the park bench is in Chippewa Square, where my grandpa would take me and my sister for walks when I was little.  They actually have that bench at the city's visitors center for people to take a look at.  But my closest encounter came when I was in town visiting family back in '09.  I walked over to Bull Street with my cousin to get a bite to eat.  We rounded the corner, and noticed that some stuff was blocked off with barricades and cones, and a small crowd was gathered.  This doesn't happen in Savannah unless there's a parade, and since we didn't think there was one scheduled for the day, we decided to walk a little closer to see what the hell was going on.  We get closer and realize that a movie is being filmed.  We were at the barricade for a few minutes, hoping to see an actor, and then Robert fucking Redford strolled by with what looked to be a PA in tow and gave us all a wave.  Needless to say, I flailed like a moron.  Turns out, he was directing The Conspirator there.

Nothing has filmed since I moved here a few years ago but both Wedding Crashers and the rom-com Failure to Launch filmed down here.  In fact we had Easter brunch last year at the place where the wedding is held in Crashers and Vaughn and Wilson hung out at one of the local restaurants basically every night they filmed here.

Also on a kind of cool film related note.  Last year Johnny Depp was sailing his boat up the coast and stopped off in St. Michaels for the night and worked a deal with the Easton bowling alley where they opened at 2 AM so he could take his kids bowling.  And Robert Mitchum of all people used to travel back and forth from Hollywood to Trappe Maryland which is about as small of a town as can be.  They have a really nice steak house there named after him that always has old movies of his screening on the TV behind the bar.

Don't know if you US peeps will have seen it but UK High School comedy show The Inbetweeners is all filmed round the area I live and where I grew up.

Its very odd seeing kids in similar school uniform to the one I had, going to the places I used to hang out and drinking in my old local pub. Its like I'm looking in a time portal back to 1996...

A Serious Man was filmed 3 blocks away from my first house in Bloomington, MN.  They blocked off the entire block during filming, but the night before it was still open, and my wife and I took my baby for a walk down the street.  The old-timey cars were lining the houses, and it really felt like traveling back in time. (I guess it doesn't say very much good about the neighborhood that it didn't take much)  They also shot the class scenes in the new science building at my alma mater, St. Olaf College.

Plenty of stuff in the DFW area but most notably (for me) Robocop was filmed in and around downtown Dallas (standing in for Old Detroit).  The unique looking OPC building entrance where Robo destroys ED-209 just before the climax is the Dallas City Hall building with a matte painting extension that turns it into a highrise.  The boardroom scenes showing a downtown Dallas view were filmed in one of Dallas' highrises (probably Bank of America Plaza).  The steel mill (where, let's face it, most of the cast dies) is most likely the one from the south side of downtown Dallas and the preceding car chase (with scattershot geography in the editing for those familiar with downtown) shows familiar Dallas landmarks like Reunion Tower.

Where, I must ask, is Dallas' Robocop statue?

Oliver Stone shot several films in the DFW area.  Obviously JFK was shot here in Dallas at Dealey Plaza.

Logan's Run shot in the Fort Worth water gardens.

For TV: Dallas, Barney The Dinosaur, Walker Texas Ranger and The Good Guys (canceled last year) were all shot here.
