Doc fakers make another fake.

Great news. Much of Catfish was fake, but the best kind of fake i.e. really really convincing.  With this, James Marsh's Vatican Tapes, and Peli's Area 51 to look forward to, it's an exciting time to be a Found Footage Fan, and I cannot wait to see what these guys bring to the PA series.

Ah, you're forgetting Apollo 18. And ANOTHER [Rec]. Two more, I think.

My favorite found footage movie of the last five or ten years remains "The Poughkeepsie Tapes," which remains on a shelf somewhere for the last five years. Saw it at the Tribeca Film Festival, and I recall it was snapped up immediately... by MGM. Last I saw was a trailer on "The Mist," though I heard the directors (who did "Quarantine" and "Devil") were reshooting some stuff. I still have some nightmares about the stuff in that movie.

As for this, I never believed Catfish was fake, but I did believe it was cheap and disingenuous. I feel like this news sorta validates that thought.

[Rec] 2 screwed the pooch big time in my honest opinion, so I haven't got high hopes for the two new ones. And I saw the trailer for that moon landing flick with Scream 4 and wasn't impressed.

However, I feel the three movies I mentioned are all in very good hands, especially that James Marsh project (The King, the best Red Riding entry, Man on Wire? I mean holy shit)

You ever see an Australian film called Lake Mungo? Highly recommended on this end. I hear they're doing an American remake and taking out the "found footage" aspect.

The Poughkeepsie Tapes, wasn't that a torture porn version of the found footage genre? I've heard of it.

The found footage style really works for me for some reason. I think they should do it more and then not have explanations of how they got certain shots or how the footage was found.....District 9 did a lot of this.

It's about a killer who kept tapes of the people he tortured and killed, but we only see some of the torture, and 0% of the really gory stuff. While there are (poorly-acted) talking heads footage to frame the videos, most of them are the killer stalking and kidnapping his prey, and then the fucked-up psychological mind-games he would play with them in his basement. The footage is supposed to be poor quality, and you never see the killer's face, and part of me wanted to mock the film for trying too hard, but I was so so so deeply unsettled by how real the footage looked. The scariest bit involved him taking footage of a couple of girl scouts coming to his house as he sits down and chit-chats with them. He eventually just lets them go without doing anything malicious, but the threat of what COULD happen just terrified me.
