YOUR QUESTIONS FOR NICK NUNZIATA 5.5.11

Thread Starter
by Nick Nunziata: link

This is the fun life Nick has to live.

Jesus, that was depressing.

You didn't answer my question and I wasn't even mean!

I'm sad now.

Which question? How did I miss it?

I was asking about the future of the site. Even had a nifty jpeg. Nevermind. Too late now if that was the last one!

I saw that but I thought it was for the boards.

Oh no, it was directed at you. I was just trying to be positive about the future & where the site might go. If you ever actually think about changing stuff, do contact me, I can get it done pretty quickly and for next to nothing.

Edit: This was my suggestion to Nick, for a redesign, before the Thread was shut. (Click into new window/tab to open big)

Understood. It just sucks that we've entered "You're the reason my Proboards site was pulled!" territory. Seeing Slater act like Sad Internet Douche #4,587,356 is very odd.

You gave them more than they deserved, Nick.  I hope it at least offers you some catharsis.

What exactly is proboards?

I've been to that message board. Lot of immature ADD hyper  "jokes."

Nick: I'm not much for message board soap opera, but it has been pretty hard to ignore this last day or two, and that was definitely a depressing read because of it. Just so you know though, I've been around long enough to remember when some of those ex-Chewers who now claim your work is "unfunny" were coopting your style of humor -largely unsuccessfully- for themselves. So there's that!

When you want to be, you're still one of the most entertaining movie writers I've ever had the privilege of reading, and by far the funniest. You are still loved! Now please cheer the fuck up.

Yuuuuuup.

Are proboards like probiotics?  Sounds like a few people could use some.

Disappointed I don't ask a question when I could. That's the shitty breaks I guess.

A free forum host. We're really not as bad as we've been made out to be.

Just to clarify, those boards may have been fine, it was the weird paranoid attitudes of those board members in their letters to Nick that I didn't get.

It's all just weird to me. I mean, it's not surprising coming from Anderson, who's a professional misanthropist, but I always thought Slater was a pretty cool guy with a great sense of humor. I just don't get it.

I just hate that people forget good so quickly.  All these people who now supposedly hate you are mostly just looking for a new scapegoat for their seething, unfettered Internet hate machine that must be fed on a regular basis, or else sad reality sets in.  All the personal stuff between Nick and the staff is just that.  Personal.  As in, between them.  Nothing good comes when that stuff is put on front street.  Keep your head up Nick, this place hasn't lasted for 15 years only because of you, but I beg to differ with anybody who thinks it is in spite of you.

It's pretty fucking pathetic, and the vitriol here just scratches the surface of other stuff I've seen floating around the wild, wild interwebs.  Lives, folks.  Live 'em.

Well, there is obviously more to this story than a casual reader like me is privy to, but I think you handled that as well as anyone could have, Nick.  Good luck keeping the peace.

I'm curious why they think Nick had their forum shut down. And how he had it shut down while we're at it.

Can I print that on business cards now? Professional misanthropist?

Yeah, that's more what I was wondering.  I kinda gathered that proboards was a forum host, but how would the owner of some other random site be able to shut down something on it?

The world is full of pretty bad stuff, most of which comes from people (and as of late, mother nature but she’ll always win the argument).  Why it’s necessary to put more hurtful and negative shit out there is beyond me.  It isn’t constructive, helpful, funny or even all that interesting.  Spending so much time and energy being an asshole is a pretty sad waste of life.  CHUD is supposed to be fun, informative, fun, and fun.  The only time its fails in this is when people choose to use it as a venue for personal attacks.  And guess whose fault that is?  The dicks who actually make the choice to shit on everyone else’s good time.  Constructive criticism is good and everyone on staff at CHUD always seems to be open to it and civil about it.  The personally inflammatory shit does nothing good for the site or the people who come here to have a good time.  If you don’t like it, please just close your eyes, take a deep breath, let it out, and fuck off. Let the rest of us enjoy CHUD for what it has to offer.
Nick, don’t give in to any of these hateful whores.  The high road can be a total pain in the ass, but kudos for sticking to it in your responses.

So I'll say my piece and then you won't have to worry about ever hearing from me again.

Nick, I don't really believe that you didn't know our forums existed, considering how many times you directly and indirectly referenced both our site and specific things that had been said about you there. Not to mention the fact that whenever someone took a potshot at you over there, we would suddenly have 350 anonymous lurkers hanging on every post, so if you weren't lurking, well, you must have been the only one who wasn't. Plus, the timing of *when* the formal complaint was filed struck all of us as more than a little suspicious. But, whatever. If you say you didn't do it, I'll believe you. I mean, the only thing more pathetic than tattling on someone's website would be tattling and then not even being man enough to own up to it. So you've got my apology for the accusation. For whatever that's worth.

As for where the vitriol is coming from, I don't think it's a secret that I'm friends with plenty of your former employees, and so I obviously have a different perspective on some of the shit that went down. But more importantly, CHUD used to be my first and last stop on the internet for the better part of a decade. And no offense, Nick, but for as long as I've been coming here, you were never "the voice of CHUD." It was guys like Devin and Russ and Beaks and Damon and a handful of others who had a genuine passion for film and managed to be entertaining and educational at the same time. I visit the site now and yeah, it pisses me off to see so much history being wasted with bland Variety cut-and-paste jobs, horribly unfunny video blogs, and news updates that are at least a day behind most of your competitors. It's obvious that all your time and attention is being spent on GUY.com--and don't even get me started on THAT site, because, yeeesh, dude--and it sucks seeing a place I used to love die such a painful and protracted death.

And again, sorry to be blunt, but you couldn't have dealt with the site's struggles in a worse way. You really couldn't have. Each new blog is like a case study in manic-depression, your mood swinging wildly from unfounded "The site is better than it's ever been!" optimism on one day to anger, self-pity and dire threats about the end of CHUD on the very next. Taking shots at your former employees (like calling Devin "a virus that plagued CHUD"), and the vaguely scummy way that both CHUD and GUY continue to pimp the awful-looking movie that your new boss wrote and directed...that's all just icing on the cake. Here's what I'm getting at: It's not just the fact that this no longer feels like "the old CHUD." It's the fact that you appear to have an axe to grind with "the old CHUD." Like it's not enough to just burn down the house that Devin and Russ worked so hard to build; now you have to brag about pissing on the ashes too. Maybe that's not your intention, but that's how it comes across. You're the kid kicking over his sandcastle before going home, just so nobody else can come along and play with it.

One last thing, then I'm out: Despite what you probably think, Nick, I don't bear you any ill will. I really don't. I *do* think you're a deeply, deeply unhappy person, and that comes across in everything you write. And I think that in general, thin skin and a martyrdom complex are a bad combination for anyone who wants to make their living online. The world doesn't need another Kevin Smith, you know? But since it's been obvious for years that your heart is no longer in this, I honestly do hope you walk away from CHUD and find something that makes you happier. Or just less miserable, I suppose.

That's all I've got. See ya, folks.

Nick is clearly at rock bottom. So why is Slater acting like a cartoon movie villain? He's like Morris Day at the end of PURPLE RAIN, just walking backstage after a successful gig, barging into Prince's dressing room and making fun of Prince's dead father for no reason.

Those questions were gross and icky to read. Seek help.

For the record, these passive-aggressive "non-accusatory" accusations just take away from what can help this website and community. I am so sick and tired of people airing out their bullshit dirty laundry. We're here to appreciate fucking MOVIES, man. How Nick runs the site is fucking up to him. We all have opinions, and NO ONE GIVES A SHIT ABOUT THEM. All this grandstanding and petty bullshit of the past couple of days? It just makes everyone look like a fucking twelve year old, and it makes this site, and these boards, worse than anything Nick might say or do.

People, if you don't want to be here, fucking DON'T BE HERE. If you have a precious little opinion about how the site is run, Nick has a personal email address and seems pretty fucking approachable. Take it up with him.

I have heard too many fucking irrelevant opinions on irrelevant issues on these fucking boards the past few days, and it just cements the stereotype of movie fans being portraits of embarassing fucking arrested development who have NO PERSPECTIVE of REAL LIFE.

Nick, rock the site, or torpedo it, I don't think we care, you know the shit you have to deal with. The rest of us who AREN'T Nick, let's just fucking use the site while it's here as movie fans, and not fucking assholes, people.

Wait, what?

I don't understand any of this. That's sort of how I'd like it to remain though. I get why the stuff is showing up on the main page when and where it does, but I can't help but feel a general negative vibe whenever I read it. It seems like some articles have neon "the sky is falling" signs at the top and it runs through the whole thing. I can't help but fear that someone clicking their way onto CHUD for the first time would get that exact same feeling, only stronger. I'm not saying anything about the conflict in question, I just think it would serve the community and site better if situations like these were less public.

Then again, I'm sure there are complicated motives and reasonings going on I don't understand. Just what one old-timer still in love with the site thinks.

So, anyone can file a complaint with proboards to get a forum shut down for what?  Being mean?   Was there some kind of copyright issue or something?

They have a rule about "offensive material" and "hate speech", that's why the board got shut down.

Huh.  Must either be a crazy strict policy or they were posting some crazy awful stuff for an internet tiff then.

I can't believe this place now attracts AICN-level trolls.  It's something I thought would never happen....

....and it needs to fucking end.  If you are here to sling shit, you don't need or deserve to be here.

This article was tough to read, and Nick is a bigger man than most for addressing the questions asked by said trolls.  I probably would have just ignored them.  I just don't get the hate...like he has personally wronged all of these people.  Don't get it at all.  Everyone just seems to be piggybacking on what some other people are saying and it's kind of like a mob mentality.  What did Nick ever do to you folks personally, besides offer free content and an awesome community of film discussion for over a decade?

I'm tired of all of this being so out in the open, but it is what it is.  You may not agree with things the guy does from time to time, but personal attacks make no sense at all.

I don't know about you, but I'd love to hear Slater do a version of jungle love.

So perhaps we should let that whole discussion die.  It's run its course, we should just put it all behind us and move on.  Plenty of other things in that article to discuss, no?  Lennon/McCartney over Harrison?  PFFFFF.

I'd still like to see a clear answer on the whole owl thing.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that Chelcie Ross and Sam Neill look alike.

Also, what browser you using, sir?

Nah, I'm not dead. I was just trying to reply to a post and everytime I hit submit everything I typed dissappeared. But it's all good. Here at work I'm using IE 8. At home I'm using IE 9 and that's where I was last night.

Anyway the moment has passed...so move along...nothing to see here (literally)

I wish some of the old staff were still kicking it around here too, but change is the nature of this beast we all call the Information Superhighway, and sites of all types have to find their ways to ride that unpredictable wave without wiping out. And as a reader you have BY FAR the easiest part of that deal. You don't have to like the changes and decisions that site runners are forced to make under what are often very challenging and unpleasant circumstances, but you also don't have to let it ruin your day.

I also wish a bunch of the old posters were still on board because as much as they could be confrontational and cockfaceish at times many were also hilarious bastards who entertain the piss out of me. It's a bummer if they can't be part of CHUD anymore but I can't waste time crying over it. There are plenty of good peeps on staff and on the boards who are trying to keep this place rockin', and those are the ones I'll stand behind.

I had a love hate thing when it came to Devin frankly. I thought he was a brilliant reviewer but his interviews weren't always great and his columns were 70% bullshit when he had a stranglehold on this site (boards included) and when Nick came around (with reviews, opinions etc etc) it always made me feel like this place could breathe.

Whatever you do Nick we need your presence here more than ever and its wanted. I like Disciple have always liked your humor and remember what a great reviewer you were for IGN.

Have faith brother.
