COPA AMERICA: ARGENTINA 2011 Discussion

We're still two months away. But I thought I'd start a thread if only to find out who else is going to be watching this thing.

It's not as big a deal as the World Cup, obviously. But, since I live down here, well... you kind of get the fever.

(I bought the PANINI album today, for example)

It was fun talking soccer with some of you gents last June. So, here's hoping we can have a good time again.

I have to root for Bolivia (Inaugural match against Argentina - and on their home turf - we don't have a chance in Hell) ... But it will be fun to play favorites after that and just enjoy the matches.

So... Who's with me?

(Extra points if you aren't from Latin America and still remotely give a shit)

Well... Today's the big day.

Argentina Vs. Bolivia (in La Plata, no less).

Strikes me as somewhat vindictive and I just hope we at least save face.

If anyone cares, chime in.

I definitely care and will chime in. Youtube is broadcasting the entire tournament in english, so it looks like that's how I'll be able to watch them. Definitely excited.

I've always enjoyed a bit o' Copa action. First started watching it when I was way into Brazil at school. I'd be very surprised if some of the other European football thread regulars don't feel the same way.

Few minutes before kick off...

Interesting the naive climate of people around here. They were conducting man on the street interviews with people in public places... Most of them were like: Oh, we're going to win! 3 - 0.... 1 - 0...

God bless their high spirits.

At this point though, a tie would be a victory. I'll cross my fingers and hope for at least that.

....

Okay, here we go...

PREPARE FOR THE MASSACRE.

Someone help me out here, please as my soccer knowledge isn't all that great. Is this Tournament for all Latin America nations including North America and the Carribean or just South America?? Also, didn't  Mexico and the U.S. just play for a "Cup" less than a week ago at the Rose Bowl and do they use the same players???

Copa America is basically just a South American cup. This is something we've been hoping would change for years as it doesn't make any sense and should cover both continents.

The one you saw was the Gold Cup which covers North and Central America.

Maybe one day Copa America will actually be that, but for now we take what we can get.

Mexico was invited to the cup as a guest. That's why they're playing. Same as Japan. I think the team is probably essentially the same. There might be some slight line-up changes.

............

That was a surprising first half, by the way. Bolivia is showing a lot of heart out there and I actually have hope in my heart that this is not necessarily impossible.

You can see the desperation very clearly in the Argentinean team and it's never healthy to want it that badly. Messi visibly lost his cool.... That was not good. And when Cambiasso actually got involved in the fight, I thought - uh oh.

It's not inconceivable that they keep this level of defense and lead to a 0 - 0 score. That's fine by me. Argentina is going to have to rethink their entire strategy, assuming they had one to begin with because it doesn't look like they did. It looks like they just went: Fuck these little pygmies, we'll go out there and mop the floor with them and that's it.

The leading advantage of the Bolivian team (because, when the chips are down, it is not a great team) is their relative anonymity. No one knows who these fucking people are out there... And there isn't enough for players to "study."

....................

ETA - Wow. We really made Argentina work for that tie. And the last 10 minutes were real nailbiters. I didn't believe, going in, that I could actually be put on the edge of my seat like this.

Quinteros has proven to be one hell of a coach. This was amazing.

I want Bolivia to play with this sort of passion when we take Costa Rica next week.

Okay... To the bar. I'm buying.
