FRANCHISE ME: DEATH WISH 4: THE CRACKDOWN

Bronson thinks you should say "No" to drugs. Or else he'll shoot you in the face.

I'm a sucker for John Ryan so I go a little easier on this entry.  It definitely shows the corrosive effect of Stallone/Schwarzenegger vehicles on the series.  And, weirdly enough, I never remember that Kay Lenz is in the damn thing.

And cocaine? Seriously? Cocaine is the big OD drug we’re dealing with here? Well done, 1987. It might as well have been pot. That would’ve been funnier. The whole D.A.R.E. era let’s-abstractly-blame-dealers-for-people’s-addictions tone of Death Wish 4 is extremely lame and out of sink with the previous films, where we’re dealing with complete maniacs and personally invasive crime. But I guess that’s just a sign of the times.
...
The drug dealers – in particular the drug kingpin Ed Zacharias (Perry Lopez) – are so laughably unintimidating they seem like gangsters from a Disney comedy. They should’ve all been wearing pin-striped suits and fedoras.

Nothing advertised how out of touch with reality these films were quite like "the drug trade" (followed closely by their idea of the porn/snuff realm).  Despite being more openly violent (and containing a significantly higher body count), RAW DEAL used this particular crime industry to similarly hilarious ends.  Nothing brings a smile to the face as fast as Steven Hill's competitor kingpin Sam Wanamaker shouting "I run the smack game in this town!!".

The drug hysteria stuff in this movie was very funny.

I think Kersey had his "how can the same shit happen to the same guy twice" moment some time during part 2. Then when they killed off his love interest in the third movie, there was some shock there in his face but mixed with "you mean they didn't rape her this time? Huh." (either that or Bronson wasn't trying very hard).

Kersey's improvised defense devices in 3 give way to EXPLODING WINE BOTTLES which he uses to TAKE DOWN THE MOB. Series is off the rails here. Still, could get crazier:

This film was top to bottom crap. After 3's all out warfare, to say this was by the numbers and anticlimactic would be giving it too much credit.

I hope that comic ends with NormMacDonald Kersey giving triumphant Supes a "Dis ain't over."

John P. Ryan's "I WARNED YOOOOUUUUU!!!!" right before his death by grenade launcher is hilarious. I also liked how refined he was when he spoke while he pretended to be that rich guy, then you see how sleazy he is during the climax.

The exploding wine bottle is a nice little hint of how creative Kersey gets in Part V. I may be the only one who enjoys that, but why wouldn't I when it contains Robert Joy's over the top performance, and DEATH BY EXPLODING REMOTE CONTROLLED SOCCER BALL! DEATH BY POISON CANNOLI!

fair enough, but to me that crossover doesn't seem all that implausible in a world where this exists:

The cannoli death is great. Bronson looks so delighted.
