If any of you haven't seen it, or want to but haven't seen much from it, check this awesome trailer out. The movie is excellent. It isn't a horror film, far from it, but it deserves mention on here because Takashi Miike has made one Hell of a sadistic piece of film. Check this trailer out and if anyone knows the music could you please tell me> its superb. Right click and save-as:

Had a chance to see the flick myself and thought it was a bit slow moving going in, but once it reached a certain peak it's a fuckin' insane drop into violence, corruption, and sexual pervisity.

Gorehounds should dig it. I'm finding that Miike's films are an acquired taste. I loathed Audition. Ichi is a pretty wild though.

I LOVE this movie.

And if you want to read the manga that it's based on (in English) go here:

<a href="http://chud.com/board/ubbhtml/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=004544" target="_blank">http://chud.com/board/ubbhtml/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=004544</a>

And if you want to download the soundtrack for the Miike film, you can do that right here:

<a href="http://www.scannerdarkly.net/ichi_soundtrack.htm" target="_blank">http://www.scannerdarkly.net/ichi_soundtrack.htm</a>

It is pretty weird but I like it a lot!

Oh and there is an animated spin-off and a live-action prequel (both made with Miike's collaboration but without him actually directing) that you can both get on ebay with English subs for like 12$.

The animated one is called: Ichi the Killer - The Animation Episode 0.

The live-action prequel is simply called 1-Ichi.

Have you watched the Dead or Alive films? The first is Miike doing Tarrantino, the second is Miike doing Takeshi Kitano and the third is Ridley Scott. The first two are great, but I haven't seen the third. The first has an insane opening and climax, too.

I believe the anime IS actually the prequel, which Miike voiced the character of Kakihara in.

Ichii is fucked up. And I love it that way. As a gorehound, that movied rocked me hard. I did feel a bit desensitized by the end, but man that was one fucked up movie. Was so glad to see someone go to such levels of depravity and disturbing.

It was a bit slow, yeah, and had some, "uhh...what the fuck?" moments, but Miike does that. He's a twisted guy I must say I definitely respect and admire and I wanna see more of that guy's stuff. (seen Ichii, Audition, and Dead or Alive Final)

And thanks for the Soundtrack link, Wetbones.

Not quite.

SPOILER!!!

We get to see Ichi kill Kakihara (which is how "Ichi the Killer" ends) in the anime as well as lot of backstory about the origins of Ichi, why he became who he is etc. The Ichi anime is kind of a stepping stone between the REAL prequel 1-Ichi (also based on a manga by Hideo Yamamoto) and the Miike movie.

You are right about Miike voicing the character of Kakihara in the anime. Sadly he's only in the anime for about 1 minute - he gets slaughtered right at the beginning.

All I have heard is of the prequel being an anime, nothing about a live action one.

*SPOILER*

As for the ending to Ichi I believe that is left open to the viewer. Kakihara wanted Ichi to fight with him and kill him, but in the end he eventually took his own life. Hence his massive scar dissapearing on his head when Shinya Tsukamoto moves his hair out of the way.

I've been waiting two weeks for this movie to arrive in my mail box. Still hasn't gotten here yet. Will give two cents when it does.

There is indeed a live-action prequel as well. It was directed by Miike's assistant director from "Ichi the Killer" and "Gozu" and is quite fun though it is also easily the least of the three.

You can get more info about and take a look at the "Ichi-Trilogy" here:

The Ichi anime is "mostly" a prequel so what you've heard is 95% true. It shows a lot of background of Ichi and then kinda jumps to the end of the actual movie. Sounds confusing but it's well thought out and written, bloody and sick as hell and one of the very few anime that I thoroughly enjoyed.

SPOILER!!!

As for your comments on the ending of "Ichi the Killer" ... Yeah, of course you are right ... I forgot ... It's either Kakihara's own wishful thinking or Jiji's influence that makes him think Ichi killed him when in fact he jumped to his own death.

BTW, I just finished reading the first 5 volumes of the manga. Great stuff and actually VERY close to the film. Miike filmed it almost scene for scene, kinda like he used the comic as the storyboard.
