Lonely Island

So I might get the fuck beat out of me for this one, but does anyone get into these guys?  They just released their second "album" and I think it is pretty hilarious.  I was careful to avoid almost every song they released early, so I could enjoy it on the CD.

Of course, the skits are amusing the first time, but I will never listen to them a second time on purpose. A couple of songs are fairly meh, and I cannot tell if Attracted to Us is a parody of Mika, but for a Beck guest stint, I am little let down by it.

My biggest beef is the insane overproduced music on the CD version that makes my speakers cry out in pain.  I hate that mp3s have forced producers to push the mix so far these days.

Anyway, I am still liking this as much as the first.  Any other fans, or have I just demonstrated horribly my poor taste?

Nah, I'll be checking it out at some point.  Taccone and crew are always good for some laughs in my book.

I haven't heard the new record, but I do like to listen to the first one every now and then. I really dig "Like a Boss" and "We Like Sports". They never fail to make me smile.

I can't get Michael Bolton's portions of "Jack Sparrow" out of my head.

I'm a fan of the guys, but nothing really grabbed me off the new album until I heard "Jack Sparrow". Picked the album up yesterday, it's good but drags a little in the middle. "After Party" is exactly the type of silliness that makes me a fan.

Standouts for me are Mama, Motherlover, Jack Sparrow, Rocky, Turtleneck and Chain and Japan.  Shy Ronnie, I Just Had Sex, The Creep and No Homo are all amusing.  The rest is eh.  Different strokes.

wd40, the Reply function over on the main Special Edition page isn't working for me, so I'll just respond here that I was sort of mildly amused by the album, and probably the reason you couldn't find my mention of it was that it wasn't one of the featured titles, and I accidentally screwed up the format (group name first, followed by album name) when I submitted my reviews. Short and not-so-sweet, but it's there. And thanks for the interest.

Also, I suspect you'd wait a long time before anyone on the music boards hereabouts gave you shit about your listening choices. This is a community with nicely wide-ranging tastes.

Cool.  I hoped as much.  I wasn't sure what the consensus was about the gang.  I figured it could go either way: either far too silly and on-the-nose, or acceptable parody.  Other music I wouldn't be as hesitant to post about, but since this was parody territory I needed to make sure.  Either way, I was really kind of kidding.  I was a tad surprised not to see a mention, but it didn't bunch my panties.

What I like about Lonely Island is that their jokes don't just boil down to "Hey look, we're white and we're rapping!" They seem to have an honest love of the genre, which many similar acts lack.

Listened to the new record over the weekend. As a fan of The Fresh Prince, I really liked the song about fighting Rocky.

I like their album very much.I think I will be more happy if some one  send  me their album then send me a __________. (<---- former spam link)

I admit it, "I Threw it on the Ground" kills me every time. The music video only excentuates the hilarity for me. I admit it's a one note concept, but there's something about how the song progressively builds toward GROOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNNNND!!! that tickles me in just the right spot.

haha! I haven't seen the video yet.  I will check it out.  I found that song a tad irritating, much like 'Like a Boss' on the first.  However, I still giggle like an idiot when he gets to the cell phone part.  "My dad's not a phone! duuuh!"

I like the album, "I Just Had Sex" is by far the best track. But alot of them (the Creep especially) don't work as well with out the visuals of the Music Video/Digital Short.

Eh, I'm not sure a I buy that. A good portion of the Justin Timberlake colabs boils down to "Hey looo, we're dressing and singing like Color Me Badd circa 1994!". And I'm pretty sure Justin Timberlake, as much as he's grown on me, is not a guy who is really in any position to make fun of how goofy boy bands sing and look.

Throw It On The Ground kills me every time, though.

Doesn't mean they don't respect the genre.  They can make fun of it all they want and be respectful.  I also don't think the band is making fun of boy bands, but if they were, I think Timberlake has more than earned his right to make fun of them.  Does self-deprecating humor not count?

I'd buy the self-depricating thing more if they weren't pointedly choosing to mock the look/sound of boy bands a decade prior to his.

YMMV.

On one song. I don't think you can really judge them off one song on the album.

They clearly know their hip-hop. 'Rocky' is a pastiche of The Fresh Prince's 'I think I can beat Mike Tyson' and 'Punch You In the Jeans' off the first album is a pitch perfect recreation of Jurassic 5. Probably every song on both albums is a riff in some way or another on various corners of rap/hip-hop. You can't do that unless you know and respect the genre.

It's not one song, it's Dick in a Box, Motherlover, and 3-way are all doing the same "Color Me Badd, lolz" riff. And it's a pretty funny riff; I never said otherwise, nor did I question their hip-hop knowlege. I just don't think honestly loving hip-hip and "Hey look, we're white and we're rapping!" need be mutually exclusive. It's a motif they've gone to more than a few times.

I just can't take it any more..
