The consequences of Freddy Vs Jason being successful

First of all : NO FvsJ spoilers in here, put those in the official Freddy Vs Jason topic. Thanks.

After years and years of speculations, Freddy Vs Jason did the unbelievable and WAS in fact successfull (I guess, making 11 m dollar more than its budget in only 4 days only in the USA, this one can be considered "successful"), now how does this change the future of horror movies ?

Besides the sure thing Freddy Vs Jason 2,

1 - Will we get more VS movies ?

Will we get more match ups with the most beloved horror icons ? Contenders : Michael Myers-Leatherface-Chucky-Pinhead-Ash-Otis-Candyman-Hannibal-Leprechau

(I took out Dracula, Frankenstein and the hairy guy because they are already in next summer´s Van Helsingmania, same for Alien and Predator)

2 - Will we get more remakes ?

Horrormovies likely to be remade : Halloween, The Fog, The Thing, Hellraiser, Re-Animator

3 - Will we get more prequels on existing series ?

Nightmare, Hellraiser etc

4 - Will we get more big budget horror movies ?

Will it be good or not that good for the horror category ? What do you think...

ps... what about Jason Vs Jaws ? That´d be fun.

Jason Vs jaws would never fly because jason is scared of water....(rolling eyes)(grin)

What i hope the success does do:
Show that horror can still turn a good profit

What i hope the success does NOT do:
show that horror can still turn a good profit

Confused? I am, and i'm only on my 5th Miller. The does do is i hope we get more horror flicks at the big screen as that is my preferred venue. the does not do: i hope it does not inspire the studios to throw together a bunch of crap to make a buck.

It seems to happen with movies, where something becomes sucessful and the surrounding studios throw some things together real quick to cash in on the trend, ignoring quality and sustanance in favor of basically a "throw it on the porch and see if the cat licks it up" attittude (i just watched 12 Angry men recently).

I've already responded to most of those questions in the Official Thread so I'll repost the here (with some changes/additions):

I hope this won't become the latest fad!

Michael Myers vs. Pinhead?

Terminator vs. Pumpkinhead?

Leatherface vs. Demonc Toys?

Ash vs. Assblaster?

The All-Midget Chucky vs. Leprechaun Movie???

My first though would be: Please, no!!! But you know what, I'd actually pay for all of the above. I love cheese! But rest assured none of them is likely to happen, mostly due to rights issues. In order to do a VS. flick the studio has to own both of the opponents or else they'd have to da an expensive co-production with another studio, which is not really likely.

The only other vs. film that I'd love to see would be a filmed version of those awesome Jason vs. Leatherface comics that came out some years ago. Those kicked lots of ass IMO. And New Line even owns both franchises ...

As for more stand-alone entries ... probably. The Nightmare prequel might happen now.

And I cant't even put in words what I would give for a big-budget, well-written, gory-as-hell Jason film!!!

I can't chime in on Freddy vs. Jason 2 because I haven't seen the damn film and probably won't until it comes out on DVD in the US because it doesn't even have a friggin RELEASE DATE here in Austria. So, not knowing how it ends I can't say shit about sequel possibilities. The box office gross certainly makes a sequel seem to be a no-brainer. Most likely they'll announce it as soon as Monday or Tuesday.

I always love it when a horror film does well at the BO, even if most people think it's shit. We should all be happy that horror makes money. Sure, that also means that some more crap will get made but it also makes it a lot easier for really creative, passionate people like Guillermo del Toro etc. to convince the studio suits to greenlight their horror projects. If horror made no money at the BO, we'd never get the likes of HELLBOY or AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS.

More remakes are a sure thing but that has nothing to do with Freddy vs. Jason or its success this weekend. There won't be a Hellraiser prequel though 'cause Dimension is already happy with churning out crappy sequels for the video-market. They'd never remake the original and go theatrical with it.

it proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that audiences will eat up any shit they are give and then ask for seconds. i will be quite suprise if this leads to anything but even more watered down and poorly constructed horror films in theaters.

I'm not very interested in VS films but i'd throw a nice 10$ spot on the admission counter to see Ash vs Pinhead. LMAO just sounds so wacky and insane. I'd surely see that over American Wedding or some of this other shit thats been released of late.

I think move movies that people have wanted to see that have come tru F vs J and Spiderman being the big 2 that have taken a decade to come about. So all those movies that people talked about before the internet made it big

</strong>They would definitely get my money on that one!

</strong> Well said. If it takes some successful crap (although I did like Freddy Vs. Jason) in order to get more horror movies made then I am all for it. Sure, they won't all be good, but it does increase the chances of more good horror movies being made.

Honestly, I'd love an Elm Street prequel if done correctly. We certainly have "Freddy Vs Jason 2" to look forward to but I really hope this doesn't become the next epidemic of "Scream" Clones that nearly destroyed horror. I liked "Scream" alot and "Scream 2" was cool as well, but beyond that, it was about 5 years of crap that followed.

Actually they did sort of prequel it in the first episode of the TV series. Freddy called someone a bitch as they were throwing him in.
Yeah, I saw that episode of "Freddy's Nightmares" but it's been so long since I have. Plus, it's not like they couldn't make a better, longer version. "Freddy's Nightmares" wasn't very good as I remember.

Oh.. another consequence. Mesa changed name from The Myers Revolutions to Freddy Vs Myers. You ask why ? Because I don´t really care anymore for The Matrix Revolutions and FVSJ just became the most expected movie on my to-see list.

Hm, guess I´ll have to wait until a next summer´s DVD release over here...the movie doesn´t seem to get a germany release date...

I feel with you. I'm from Austria and we only get a film if it comes out in Germany as well (because of dubbing etc.). But I seriously think that it will get a big theatrical release in Germany/Austria later this year. Just look at how successful it has been in the US! People in Germany/Austria may not have faith in horror but just let money do the talking ... hehe ...

Ich frag mich gerade warum ich das eigentlich auf Englisch geschrieben hab ... Naja, wär ja unfair den anderen gegenüber ...
