Oh my god..... That trailer just sent total shivers down my spine. I cannot wait to see this movie. I may put myself in a Coma somehow until release.

How?  I don't get that at all.  If anything I have more questions.  We have no idea what happens once they reach the planet, why it happens, who/what creatures are involved and what their motivations are.  All the trailer shows us is short clips of shit hitting the fan.

The flip-out comment was being thrown at those who find it necessary to make Hitler Meme videos over a rating for a movie they've yet to see (and what they have seen is awesome).

And I ain't goin' anywhere near that fuck'in trailer.

Re: "R" didn't Ridley say that it was the ideas that would make it an R, rather than content.

I wonder how far out existential horror has to be to be rated an R.  Surely the idea that perhaps we weren't created by an omniscient being wouldn't be enough, or does he present an argument compelling enough to sway young devout people?

Haha!  I started to and just had to slap my hand away.  I want to be surprised, dammit!!!!  Why oh why are they making this so difficult!

Everything looks great but there's something in the back of my mind about this that keeps me from getting excited. Obviously they haven't shown us the entire movie but it seems that the plot, that we know of, is just "discover symbols, arrive on planet, find temple, crew attacked/mutated, alien ship takes off, Prometheus is rammed into it and both crash.". I hope that it's not just a simple Honey Pot plot where they lured us there to wipe us out. I'm also worried about Scott's intent to turn this into 2001 meets Chariots of the Gods. Alien was just a simple monster movie. I'd be happy is Prometheus was the same with some cool ideas and crazy Lovecraftian creatures. But what I want more than anything is the type of MOOD and ATMOSPHERE that we got in Alien which is lacking from 99.99% of todays Horror movies.

It does seem like they're giving away all the major story beats, but there's still loads we don't know about the story, so I'm hoping crashing into the space jockey ship isn't meant to be the climax of the film.

The trailers are getting better and better.  I don't care if they touched on plot points.  Granted, the Alien mythology is not a big deal to me, but I don't get why it has to be a secret any more than any other movie where I know how a lot of the beats will play out, whether I've seen trailers or not.  This thing looks like an intense, visual stunning dynamo.  No trailer is going to spoil that.

That's what I'm hoping and that the crash is only the half way point or at least the beginning of the last third of the movie. I do wants some surprises.biggrin.gif

Can't believe I'm almost anticipating this one even more than Nolan's flick, now. Just incredible.

Ridley Scott deserves his own comic book, and each time you turn a page, it makes that howling noise from the trailer.

I don't think a PG13 version of the film this trailer promises would be very satisfying.  I don't think there is any way a neutered version would deliver the visceral body horror I anticipate from this film.

One groan worthy bit though, seriously if you were in some alien mausoleum, some thing was heading towards you, it lurches out of the water looking like THAT, would you really smile and hold out your hand?  I mean, really?

Seriously!

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

It looks like a king cobra with a vagina for a face!  That's something you run screaming from!

The bit with the space jockies chasing the crew in sonarvision(?) was freakin chilling.

I want the Prometheus kamikaze to be the midpoint of the movie, but I fear it's not.  Although:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

We haven't really seen Guy Pierce in any of the trailers, and we know he's in the movie in some capacity.

Pretty sure it was said that:

He only has a minute or so of screentime, so it's not suprising that he hasn't been seen in the trailers yet.  TED viral video notwithstanding.  It's probably a pretty small part in any case.

You also got to remember he pops up on the Prometheus set in one of the 'behind-the-scenes' videos...so don't believe everything...

Everyone shitting themselves about this being rated PG-13 should take a deep breath and calm the fuck down. One, because Rothman said if the cut Scott has submitted to them gets an R, then that's the rating he'll go with, and two, IT'S NOT RATED ANYTHING YET.

I really wish I'd refrained from shitting myself before reading your post, Greg.

...

Smart assery aside I agree. I don't think it's worth getting worked up over the rating, at least not right now, and even if Prometheus does somehow get slapped with a PG-13, well, give Scott and the film a chance regardless. I'd be more upset over the film being cut to shit before I'd be upset over the rating.

(EDIT: Though I acknowledge that the latter would probably lead into the former.)

I'm really looking forward to Charlize Theron playing a feminine Carter Burke.

What's crazier? The thought of doing a dark, visceral body horror sci-fi movie with creatures impregnating us as PG-13 or doing such a movie that costs about 150 million and therefore has to at least do 350 million to be considered a success?

By the way, I think we'll get a mirror scene to Alien.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

In it, the scientists wanted to bring an infected on board and Ripley declined. Then Weyland's robot let them in. Now in this movie, Weyland suit Vickers appears to hold the scientists off bringing one of their own onto board. I don't know about you but I'd agree with a flame thrower holding Charlize Theron.

"The rating board has not opined yet and it will go in to the board soon. This I can tell you and I can tell all the fans, not one frame will be cut. The movie will be what it should be. We will not cut a frame of the film," he promised. "We will stand behind it 100 percent and if that means it's an R, then so be it, because not an ounce, not a percentage are we going to compromise the film." - Rothman

This *is* Tom Rothman we're talking about though....

A friend just posted the following to my Fb page.  It's a link to a site that is a grand grand memory cave of the making of Alien.  LOTS of behind the scenes shots, background info on some practical FX, etc.  Great videos, too.  Really wonderful stuff.

Thought I should share this here.

(Apologies if this has been posted already!)

Shots like this one, I especially get a kick out of:

Now now, Greg: we're the Internet. We know better than facts.

Yeah Greg. What if destiny was never meant to be?

Ridley was given the go-ahead from the start to shoot the film however the hell he wanted.........with no rating in mind..........and they would worry about a rating in the editing room.  Everything that Ridley (and Rothman) have said since Scott turned his cut in has pointed towards Ridley delivering the exact version of the film that he wanted to.  You know what?  I believe them.

Does Rothman have a reputation for meddling?  He used to, but it looks like he's backed off of it in recent years.  That doesn't mean he won't put his foot down if the MPAA gives it an R when they finally rate it and demand that Ridley trim it down.  I don't think he will though.  Fox NEEDS more franchises and will do anything to get them at this point.  That's why Matthew Vaughn and Rupert Wyatt were turned loose on First Class and Apes, respectively.  It's also why they are being turned loose on sequels to both films and why Aronofsky was brought on board The Wolverine (before leaving over reasons that had nothing to do with studio conflicts).  Their middle-of-the-road, watered down approach to their films has not served them well in recent years and they know it.  That's why they are rebooting and/or sequelizing every franchise that they own right now.

I think it will likely get released as an "R" if that is the verdict the MPAA hands down.  I think we'll also get a longer cut on Blu (which Ridley has already hinted at), but it will consist mostly of extra character bits.

Regardless, I guess we'll find out soon enough!

So glad I wasn't eating while listening to that.  I won't listen to non-reversed version.  Nope, ain't gonna do it.  But that reversed/scrambled version?  Geezus Mother Mary.  That's some stupendous sound effects right there.

That featurette was the first time I've seen Mr Elba in a spacesuit like he also leaves the ship at some point.

So... soundbites.  Well, that sounds pleasant.

Odds on the "cut it off" leading to acid spray, leading to helmet melt?

You know, I was going to listen to these files, but I'm honestly enjoying just reading other people's reactions to them. So, I'm going to stick with that, and when I see the film myself I'm going to try to place each reaction to what I think is the appropriate beat.

...admittedly I have shitty willpower so I may break down and listen to them, but if I can stay strong this should be a fun experiment.

I am sorely tempted to use that sound bite as a ringtone, just to see the reactions on people's faces.

The cardinal rule of horror is being followed here - less is more. Let your imagination do the rest. Yeah, probably glad I haven't eaten breakfast yet.

Which is why I don't understand everyone's obsession with what the rating will be.

I'd certainly disagree on the latter point when it comes to a franchise that, aside from atmosphere and tension and occasionally pseudo-sexual subtext, lives and dies in large part on its body horror quotient. Amongst numerous other things, I expect gruesomely icky shit out of a "proper" film in this franchise. From what we've seen and heard from the grapevine, I doubt it'll disappoint there. *optimistic fingers crossed*

Read my whole post, and the post I was responding to.  We agree.  Shaun H said extra fucks and more blood do not always make for a better movie.  I said that may be true, but I don't want to the director to have to self-censor himself.  So there's no disagreement between us.  A few "fucks" and buckets of blood are not going to make a bad movie good, but if stripped away from a good movie, can certainly take away from the experience.  My basic point was that  I want to see Prometheus in all its glory, and since I feel the franchise is inherently R, that meant with the expected blood/body horror/swearing/etc.

Word. Its just sad that the times we live in such a movie getting an R is something that needs to be discussed at all and isn't simply the foregone conclusion that it should've and would've been prior to the dominance of PG-13 "action" films in mainstream Hollywood.

'R' used to mean something for the most part...it was a certain grit and tone that went beyond curse words and blood.  Most of the R rated movies back in the day couldn't be edited down to PG-13 without losing the essence of the movie.  Nowdays everything is so fucking inoffensive and generic, it doesn't matter, and you can very easily swap ratings without editing it into a different movie.

I don't think Scott made the kind of film that is so easily dicked with, but we'll see.  But that sound clip alone sounds R rated.

Rothman only said he wouldn't cut a frame from the film...he NEVER mentioned the audio...

I think he never will cut a frame, if PG-13 was agreed from the get go.
