Be very, very careful about where you wander online, guys.  The film has begun screening.

Not Prometheus-related, but screw it. Though I do detect a bit of inspiration from Prometheus in the music:

It will be interesting to see Prometheus' influence on that game, especially considering the fact that the developers had discussions with Ridley in terms of story and plot in relation to what he was doing with his prequel.

I did a little searching, and a few I found seemed like BS.

As far as the Colonial Marines game.  Hasn't that been in development since the late 1990s?  I seem to remember a small screen cap for the PS1 in an issue of GamePro back in 8th grade.  Nuke Nuken Forever is coming to mind, oh, same developer!!! (and yes, I'm aware they had little to do with Forever, but they still felt like they should release what ID had done)

Edit* Feb 12th, 2013!!!!!  I thought it was supposed to come out this fall?  And that was after the Spring 2012, and Late 2011 delays?  When has a game, that has been this delayed, ever been good?  John Romero might have some input.

I got this off of twitter:

Prometheus' screenings already happening for cinema owners/programmers in Oz, have heard mixed feelings

Probably waiting to see what people like after the 'Prometheus' release...and then building on THAT.

...though 'Colonial Marines' is ALIENS based, and 'Prometheus' is it's own thing (ha ha)...your guess.

maybe the developers had these things programed already

More of a case of being announced far too soon in development, I think. But Gearbox, the guys behind Borderlands, is behind it and have been taking their sweet time, so I have high hopes.

I'll take your word for it (never played Borderlands)

But I see them start advertising like this, I'm out.

Righto.  They also set it aside to do that last AVP game first, which incidentally was a pseudo-sequel to Alien 3.

I think I mentioned this in the game's thread, but the producer sounds like he has no idea what he's talking about.  Referring often to how great it's going to be to play through Hadley's Hope...

...Which was completely nuked at the end of Aliens.  But it's a sequil to Aliens!  Ha ha ha!  Continuity.

And I went looking for screening reactions too, and they sound like complete bunk.

Though one bit is so bonkers I hope it's true (spoiled just in case):

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Old man Weyland is an evil cyborg, running around killing people.

Yeah, i've read three completely different "spoiler" reports.  I think it's true it has been screened, but that opens the flood gates to people making up crap.

As far as the Aliens game, I love how they are acting like it's a sequel, minus the fact is makes no sense. Like Mister Banana Grabber said, Hadley's hope was DESTROYED, and even in that above video, the Sulacco had no crew besides the marines that went down to LV-426, so who is dead on the ship?  Makes zero sense.  Even if it takes place after Alien 3, and the Sulacco had a new crew (I think we saw that ship in Alien 3, that the company was using it to go to Fury 161), where did these Aliens come from?

Maybe it hasn't screened, maybe it has?

Much like the company, did they know, or didn't they?  It's all a fucking conspiracy.

I sure hope to God the rumors of this, are not true, because it sounds awful.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

The SJ or the big bald guys are infect early humans who were kidnapped by this "god like race of aliens" (unseen in the film, other then their flying saucer) and mutated into the big bald blokes that we see in the trailer and the the holograms. They were given strength and super intelligence and became gods among men. They were infected with this black virus that mutates them. Weyland gets hold of this, gets big and goes on a rampage - his the main bad guy.

another one

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Weyland has been able to create advanced tech, like bio people (androids), because he has been in contact telepathically with this race of super aliens (not the space jockeys).  They have shown him the way to create all this tech with the intention of him finding them.  They turn him into a Jockey (an advanced human) and he eventually leaves the planet with alien eggs with the intention of returning to earth to destroy.  yes, Weyland is the Space Jockey from Alien.

A friend of mine said he was going to the cast and crew screening a few days ago...and hasn't said a goddamn word since. I can only presume that the film was so incredibly amazing that it blew his mind and has stunned him into silence or something.

I'll nag him tomorrow just for an impression, either way.

Neither of those reports seem to fit with the more reliable screening reports.

and thank fuck for that.  Both of those sounded frankly awful, especially the last one which panders to the "BUT IT HAS TO END UP AS ALIEN" mentality.

I hope you realize that every single one of these things have been considered. They're purposely going back and retreading these environments with a logical approach in mind which is, ya'know, kind of the point. I'm not saying you'll like the answer, but it's foolhardy to think they glossed over all of this.

Specific blurbs of interest:

  • "The Sulaco is there at the prison planet (Fiorina "Fury" 161)." It's definitely not over LV-426, which is where it appears to be in the start of Colonial Marines. Logically, it'd be near the planet it ejected Ripley onto.]
  • "Weyland-Yutani actually … boarded the Sulaco."
  • "Something happened before that Ripley doesn't know about that led to the ejection [from the Sulaco.]. If Weyland-Yutani can't get the specimen from Ripley, and they are on the ship, what would their next step be? It would be to turn the ship around and go back to the source, LV-426.
  • The atmosphere processor blew. That is about 3 kilometers away is where Hadley's Hope is, and it's taken a lot of damage because that was about a 40 megaton blast. About 1000 kilometers away from that is where the derelict was.

Anything above ground on Hadley's Hope would have been vaporized at that distance (roughly 1.9 miles) by a 40 megaton ground burst, not simply "it's taken a lot of damage".

Also, the derelict was really 1000 kilometers away? Interesting, as that's a long jaunt for a salvage crew.

1000 kms? Newt and family driving over didn't seem like a multiple days trip.

More good reason why that scene deserved to get cut. Did the film ever explain why there were two extra facehuggers in the lab?

Um, well, they did gloss over it.

First off, the AP wasn't 3km away.  They could see it from the window in Operations.  Here's the script

188       INT. OPERATIONS - MINUTES LATER                                                                                  188

Everyone, including Bishop, is crowded at the window, intently watching the AP station,

which is a dim silhouette in the mist.

RIPLEY

It's very pretty, Bishop.  But, what are we looking for?

Suddenly, a column of blue flame, like an acetylene torch, jets upward from the station at

            the base of the cone.

As far as the Space Jockey ship being 1000km away, how is the possible when LV-426 has a diameter of only 1200km?  Seems the most if could be, would be 600km.

They want to recon stuff, that's fine... but for them to say they have researched and that these aren't plot holes when viewed as an "actual sequel", they are full of SHIT.

HICKS

Looks like love at first sight to me.

WIDE ANGLE ON BISHOP and GORMAN staring at the o.s. active facehugger in the tube.

HICKS

(voice over)

                                                 Oh, he likes you, Burke.

BISHOP picks up a file-folder from between two of the dead specimen tanks.

BISHOP

Two are alive, the rest are dead.

BISHOP flicks through the file-folder’s pages.  Inside is a medical chart printout with hand-

            written entries.

BISHOP

                                                            (reading)

                                                 Surgically removed before embryo implantation.

Subject:  Marachuk, John J.  Died during the procedure.

                                                            (looking up)

They killed him taking it off.

The story goes, that once Newt's mom called for back-up, the colony sent people out there.  They took Newt's family back, and some explored the ship despite warnings from Newt's mom.  Many were "hugged", and were also taken back.  Due to how long it took to get Newt's dad back, the fachugger dislodged soon after getting there.  His chest exploded and the Alien escaped, making it's home the AP.  When the new victims were there during this, they rushed to remove the facehuggers, it was too late for some, but two were able to be removed before embryo implantation.  Newt's father's Alien, was the queen.

Got this all from Newt's Tale, a comic prequel.

It could've been 3km. The AP was enormous. Based on the view in the movie (and standing around nuclear plant cooling towers) I could believe that it was a couple of miles away.

The other stuff (1000km to the derelict, Hadley's Hope "damaged" vs. vaporized) is just bullshit.

Nah, it was pretty small.  LOL

They also talk about the aliens using a tunnel to move back and forth between Hadley's and the AP.  I just don't envision it being 1.8 miles long.  I'd say the AP was a good 900 yards from Operations.

Not to mention the time it took an Alien to take Newt back there to be cocooned.   That thing had to be hauling ass to get her back in that short of time.

http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/gmap/hydesim.html

Bascially, a 40 MT blast would be 5.23 miles.  For HH to be in the codition shown in the game, I'd imagine it would have to of been 20 miles away.  That is clearly not the case from what we are shown in the film.

But whatever, it's just a game.  I'd be fine with them saying the AP went nuclear but it wasn't as bad as it could of been.  It only equaled a 10 KT explosion and the structure of HH was designed to withstand the harsh enivorment LV-426 had before being terraformed, and that saved the basic structure of the place.

I need to go get laid. LOL

Until yesterday I didn't even have a choice since they were just going to show the 3D version in Sweden. But after protests and a petition they've decided to add 2D showings as well. Considering how dark the film looks even without the 3D, I think I'll go for the 2D version.

weirdly I've been thinking the opposite.  One of the most spoliery shots I've seen was as clear as a bell.  Now, it was a gif so it may have been cleaned up, but I wonder how dark it actually will be.  Scott said that Prometheus as a ship was state of the art because "space truckers" had been done to death.  I wonder if he's done the same thing with the visuals, made it a lot clearer, since dark, gloomy hiding of things has also been done to death.

All I know is that I opt to see shit in 2D first-and-foremost because I find 3D to be distracting (in both positive and negative ways). I want to be fully immersed in what's happening, not pulled out by "oh, cool" pop-up moments. If it's that damn good (which seems likely), I'll catch it the 2nd time in 3D (which seems to have been done in a practical sort of way - which is what I prefer - if the trailer's any sort of indication).

well if its as good or better than The Avengers I won't mind seeing it in 3D. But yeah, regardless of how well it's done it can be very distracting.

really?  Why?  If nothing else I'm gagging to see this because you just know Scott is going to fill it with stuff.  If there's anyone out there who can use 3D properly to add atmosphere and depth to a film, it's Sir Ridley.

Normally I'd agree with the "fuck 3D" mentality.........especially when it comes to post-conversions...........but Ridley FILMED this sucker in 3D and apparently had the sets lit accordingly so everything would turn out properly.  If it were some random filmmaker in the chair, I might have my doubts, but I trust Ridley here.

I will definitely be going 3D for my initial experience because that is the way that Ridley intended it to be seen.  He was given the option and chose to embrace the format.  2D might be an option if the film warrants a second theatrical viewing though.
