Are the same people who derided the new Hobbit trailer for going with the LOTR look going to bag on this trailer for going with the Alien look?

So, could that be a Space Jockey?  Possibly bigger versions of humans?  I'd be all for that to be honest.

There's also an alien looking guy jumping down off one of the rovers on one of the humans in the hanger. It's funny how night and day the HD looks compared to the SD video. I was talking to a friend and I find myself looking forward to this more than even the Avengers and Batman movie.

I think the Hobbit "wins" the week for me, personally, but that was still a freaking awesome trailer.  Looks like one or more of the crew winds up mutating in some fashion, and goes all Pinbacker on the rest of the crew... curious.  Also, whoever designed the Prometheus itself was clearly influenced by Firefly.

One other random thought; someone upthread mentioned this can't be LV426 due to the planet having blue skies, but perhaps that dust storm hitting Noomi Rapace is indicative of some massive climate altering event.  That storm sure as hell looks like LV426 as we know it.

Even if the movie is amazing, we still lose the mystery of the Space Jockey.

Future generations will watch Alien, and say "Hey, it's that creature from Prometheus!"

I guess you could say awe was lost.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about the trailer?  I agree.

I dunno - my awe is quite erect and throbbing right now.

No, because there are actual ideas present in this.

Science fiction > fantasy.

THE LINES HAVE BEEN DRAWN.

If you pause at 34 seconds, you can clearly see some sort of head being examined on the lab table.  It looks like the space jockey's head.  Also at 40 seconds is what looks like a huge flying saucer over the water fall.

The guy screaming is clearly having some sort of morphing going on, possibly becoming a new creature?  At 44 seconds, the guy leaping off the vehicle is clearly not human, and looks like the guy who was screaming before but his face fully morphed into something else.

The head/helmet seems quite a bit smaller than the one in Alien though.

And if you compare haircuts you can tell who the leaping morphing mutant guy is.

ETA: When the space jockey´s chair is coming up from the floor, I think you can see the helmet in an open position at the top of it.

I love the trailer, but I'm a bit worried.  There's no xenomorph in this, so they better damn well have a worthy substitute.  The xenomorph, no matter how played out it is, is the best, most original and scariest aspect of the Alien series.  What is the antagonist in this movie if not the xenomorph?  The gods?

Yes, it seems smaller, but it looks the same as the jockey's.

Who's the leaping guy?

Tim Tebow isn't in this Ambler

The dude that looks like Jack Shepard?

Judging by the mohawk, it's the guy next to the wheelchair at 0:42. But I can't tell who the actor is.

I agree but if I end up with another great sci-fi horror film from Ridley Scott set in the world of Alien I'll take that loss happily.

Logan Marshall-Green?  Guy Pearce?

That's what I've been thinking, honestly. They'll realize the jockey is a suit and they're actually humanoids.

According to io9, the leaping guy may be the same person who has his face hugged.

BUT does that really fit with Alien?

It'll be a prelude to how the Alien utilizes your DNA and affects how it comes out; same idea, but this time there's no egg/chestburster and you, in essence, become the alien.

It certainly could. They had no real time to investigate it and assumed it was fossilized when, in fact, it was a suit.

Wow, I am impressed. Great teaser.

I agree with some others that this planet does not look like planet from "Alien". The sky looks almost blue, and the surrounding terrain is not a match.

I'm hoping that this is another world, and that they find a similar 'space jockey' ship there.

Well I can say that waking up this morning to this trailer in HD certainly didn't suck. Not one bit.

*Groin explodes into rainbows*

I've been reading up on the myth of Prometheus and after seeing a lot of the imagery from the trailer, I think I may have an idea as to the direction of the story....

Go for it, VTRan. I think most of us deduced that they would end up stealing some form of the Alien technology from the Jockey's and it bites them in the ass.

I quite like this idea instead of the end being a direct shot of the Jockey ship crashing. Maybe another ship exists but is alluded to getting away. Or maybe there's no direct Alien tie other than the Weyland logos and the Jockey characters themselves. This seems to make more sense to me, and that the Jockey we see in Prometheus isn't the same one from Alien; otherwise, they'd have to explain how it came to be white/infected, why the eggs are actually eggs and not containers, why the facehuggers look the way they do, etc. I'm guessing they'll leave that all up in the air for us to decide how the process inevitably evolved the way it did, leaving just enough mystery still going into Alien.

I've always kinda liked the deleted scene from Alien where the captured humanoids morph into eggs. It's always seemed creepier and more of a body horror style than the queen/insect/parasite setup of Aliens.

Perhaps Scott is going to reintroduce some of those ideas...?

yeah, that's the jist of it....the images in the trailer of the bighead and small 'tombstones' along with Fassbender taking that goo out of the container....

I'm a bit pissed now as it's been last day at work alcohol binge so..

FUCK the xenomorph. And FUCK the use of the word xenomorph.  It's just a fancy way of saying Alien, it's not the canon way of refering to it..

seriously though, I hope there's no Alien in this movie.  Yes I hope you can see where it comes from, yes I hope it alludes to the fact it was deliberately created to destroy mankind but I really, really hope there's no actual one in this movie (although given that the SJ's bones are "bent outwards.. like it exploded from the inside" I'm picking we're going to get a chestburst of some sort.)

Everything else in this trailer has me so jazzed I think seeing an actual Alien would be a bit anti-climactic (just me opinion obviously.. and I'm pished so who knows what I actually mean).

I agree... I'm fine with them finding the same derelict ship on the same planet (but I still hope this is a different planet/ship) - but I really don't want to see an "alien"/xenowhatever in this film.

Don't make it too much of a retread. The universe is VAST. Take us to new places too.

No way that's LV-426.

Right?

There were reports of xenomorphic type costumes and headpieces on set and all of those reports have proven accurate to what we're seeing. There will be SOMETHING, it'll just be far removed from the humanoid alien and it won't be a major element of the story.

Awesome trailer. Let's hope the Ridster knocks it out of the park.

The mysterious 'man' in the Space Jockey chamber...he doesn't seem human.

For one thing, he looks huge.

sj.jpg

His eyes, brow, and ears look alien, too.

Also - and this is a stretch, I know - the way he moves in the split second we see him makes him look like an animated, CG character.

If the creature as we know it has been mostly seen derived from human dna, then it seems a pretty strong possibility that when we see them in Prometheus, they will be derived from the dna of the space jockey people.

Best damn trailer I've seen all year, and it's become my most hyped film of next year next to The Expendables 2.

No probs, I enjoy obsessively going frame by frame through trailers!

OK, here's my theory *possible spoilers, if I'm anywhere near the truth*

The aliens on the planet the crew visit are basically humanoid, as shown by the huge humanoid head in the pod-chamber. The reason they look so much like us is because they created us (the whole 'beginning of humanity' thing).

The dude in the Space Jockey chamber is one of those aliens.

They have the technology to change DNA and physical form, which gives us the mohawk mutant, and old hose-nose.

No offense, but how you do know that?

They'll probably be augmented in some way, but I know they built enormous prosthetic suits for them.

Ah, I may have misinterpreted your post.  I took it to mean that the space jockeys were men/humanoid in a suit in the film, as in the tall bald man in the picture physically getting into a space jockey suit, as I guess Ridley has confirmed that what we see in Alien is in fact a suit, not a skeleton.

You meant they will be portrayed in the film as a prosthetic with a human actor in a suit?

Yeah, performers dressed up as you see above, but I don't know if that changed or not, I know they were built, as well as another alien too.

"Dressed up" as in the tall, pale Voldemort looking guy?  I'd be a bit disappointed if after all this the Space Jockeys looked basically like a really tall albino guy...

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. Pretty sure they're called 'Engineers' or something. Though I'm sure that's been mentioned in interviews before. But, like I say, they could have changed that, could be mo-cap/CG or something for all I know now.

Hey, I prefer sci-fi to fantasy in general myself, but fantasy is a fine genre in which to explore ideas too and The Hobbit has plenty of them.

Good call on the additions from Predators, but they aren't what I'm thinking of here.

Anyway, here's the only(?) mention of non-human species within the Alien/Predator filmverse (beyond what we have been shown):

Frost: Hey, I sure wouldn't mind getting some more of that Arcturian poontang! Remember that time?
Spunkmeyer: Yeah, Frost, but the one that you had was a male!
Frost: It doesn't matter when it's Arcturian, baby!

So obviously we have some odd planet out there in the universe filled with attractive humanoid shemales.  Discuss!!!

Are the AVP films "worthy" of being included alongside the four existing Alien films (and the upcoming prequel)?  No, but they ARE a part of the franchise nonetheless.  Barring something in Prometheus writing them out of the series (and that doesn't seem likely), they will STILL be a part of it.

For better or worse, it IS at least somewhat canon.  The word itself comes from the dialogue in Aliens.

I think you're right.  What's funny is that this really wouldn't be a unique idea to the franchise.  The abandoned William Gibson draft of Alien 3 involved the xenomorphs accidentally being virally weaponized.  You could not only be facehugged/chestbursted..............but a bite or a nice clawing could infect you and turn you into one.  There's an action sequence within the script that is quite similar to the outer hull scene in Star Trek: First Contact, with people in spacesuits vs. infected people and aliens advancing towards them.  This was the first script commissioned for Alien 3 and one of only two where Ripley isn't the main character.  Hicks, Newt, and Bishop were the leads in this draft.  Ripley was in a coma for almost the entirety of the piece.

David Twohy also did a draft of Alien 3.  His had no returning characters and was set in a space prison, with a proto-Riddick character as the protagonist.

Due to the general nonchalant behavior towards the idea of alien beings in the first two films, I've always assumed they were talking about banging some weird humanoid species.
