Jones looks, I mean, the film looks fantastic.

I'm a big fan of the Latina mutant (hope the drawn-on wings are replaced with CGI), and the chick playing Mystique (Black dress? ...damn.)

But Beast looks like crap, and this flick continues to look cheesy as fuck in print. Batman: The Movie vibes from those submarine shots. Bet it looks great in motion, though.

Jennifer Lawrence, the Winter's Bone girl, is Mystique. I don't know who the black dress girl is.

The thing that sort of annoys me about this movie is that there are several Marvel characters for whom the swingin' mod 60s style would be a terrific fit--Fantastic Four being the obvious choice--but the X-Men aren't really one of them. That series didn't really come into its own until the 70s.

I know that kind of seems like a nitpick, but Astro City has spoiled me for retro superheroes and the way comic book characters can be a near-perfect commentary on the era in which they were created.

See, I think the Beast looks better here than in X Men 3.

Oh, for the record, I completely agree. It's some poor design choices, but at least there's some effort there. They didn't just glue fur to Kelsey Grammer, and paint his face blue.

But Beast is just not a character that belongs on film, mostly because no one will ever take the time to do it right. The guy has exaggerated limbs and thumb-like appendages on his feet. He's agile, and can swing around with all four limbs like an ape. So, what would someone like that look like, if you accelerated and exaggerated his mutation?

...a giant blue cat? Really?
