Spider-Man: now with 100% more horrible improvisation!

Ironically Garfield's Peter Parker is less of a nerd than Maguire's, and yet seems like way more of a pussy.

Wow, that has the look and feel of a deleted scene.

Well that put my ass in a seat.

At home watching Spider-Man 2.

That's supposed to compete with this?

I love how Raimi dressed up Peter to look like himself.

I'm still looking forward to this film and, in my opinion, Garfield appears to be a better Peter Parker than Macguire, but this scene is pretty uninspired.  Unlike Bruce Campbell's moment in Spiderman 2, where his turning Peter away from the theater door complicated his miscommunications with MJ, this scene has no meaning and comes off as something that should be deleted from the final cut if the filmmakers have the good sense to do that.  Just have Peter drop by Gwen's window and use the door man excuse to cover himself, there's no need for an awkward and seemingly improvised conversation that goes nowhere.

And no one plays a dick like Campbell, who at least had the justification of theater policy.  Why couldn't this guy just buzz Gwen's apartment?  It comes off as forced and makes Peter look stupid for not asking that in the first place.

Blasphemy! I will always consider Maguire pretty much perfect in the role. But then again, I have a hard time hearing anything negative about the first two films, and am more defensive than most about the third. I'm not very impartial.

Andrew Garfield, on paper seems like a better choice and he claims he's a huge fan of the character, but from everything I've seen of him, it seems off. His Peter seems to have a lot of built up anger issues, he seems the kind of guy who bottles it up in the day and then let's rip at night - letting his issues poor out into the cops and criminals he meets in everyday life. I'm wondering if that is because Garfield is a fan of the character, that he's subconsciously feeding the fan wish fulfilment in him - the nerd rage of "if I was spider-man I'd mess those guys up".

There's seem to be no bounce to him, no vitality and his banter appears to be quite dry and mean. Of all the things the internet ever got right, it was the idea of casting Donald Glover or someone like him - race doesn't matter, it's that very tangible energy and screen presence which I don't think we'll be getting here. We're going from Keaton to Bale.

I somehow doubt that Garfield is huge Spider-Man fan. If he is, then good for him, but I always chalk that kind of thing up to what filmmakers think they're supposed to say while promoting a movie.

I'll buy that Garfield is a fan of the character.  He's gone above and beyond what I think even the filmmakers would be expecting him to say in discussing his love of the character.

WOW!  I just saw the...3D trailer for Amazing Spider-Man, and it is quite...Awe-Inspiring!

Garfield being a fan of the character has absolutely no bearing on the movie.

I hear the makeup artist on Fantastic Four LOVED Ben Grimm when he was a kid.

I think it has a pretty important part to do with how he approaches the role. Fans of pop culture properties, who headline the film, are often the ones who least get a character they're a fan of.

Indeed.  In 3D ... it is .... Amazing!

(genuinely - the 3D was fucking brilliant).

Yeah, but if the writing is wrongheaded, he's not going to say STOP THE PRODUCTION, THIS DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT. He's a supporting actor being paid much less than Tobey Maguire in a HUGE franchise picture.

These guys always talk up how much they loved the characters, source material, etc. in order to get nerd cred. Whether or not, it's true - mostly not. Garfield's a great actor (See: Boy A) and I have no doubt he'll be fine here. That's all that matters at the end of the day.

But that bullshit at Comic-Con (i.e. him in the audience reading a letter he wrote about how affection for Spider-Man) and fandom's buying into it 100% is proof positive the fanboy community is the easiest fucking lays in the world. Dumbest too not to see through that stunt. Tobey Maguire never pulled that crap in order to "win people over." Ditto Daniel Craig. Ditto Christian Bale. And the only other actor in the same predicament as Garfield, Henry Cavill, hasn't either. Yet.

The real kicker is Garfield, or more importantly whatever higher-up suit at Sony/Marvel who made him do that, should be focused on winning the general public over and not the Comic-Con crowd.

Whoa, I might like Maguire better, but I'm definitely not going to go so far as to call Garfield some kind of phony Spider-Man fan who fabricates letters in order to trick fanboys into thinking he's "one of them." Garfield strikes me as a pretty genuine and heartfelt guy in interviews, bordering on painfully sensitive. Some of the candid behind-the-scenes stuff on The Social Network release reflects that impression, too. It's silly to speculate on an actor's "real" personality, sure -- but I think he's earned the right of the benefit of the doubt? At the very least, I'm sure his intentions are good.

Maybe he's overreacting a little by wearing the suit at Comic-Con and everything, but it's also a little endearing, wouldn't you say? I do think his performance will wind up miscalculated, along with the rest of the movie, but I don't think he's full of shit. Leave that to the producers of this thing.

I only really liked Maguire in the first Spiderman, thought he was OK in the second one, and disliked him throughout most of the third (even though the script deserves more blame than him.) He generally did right with Peter's earnestness (even though it was overplayed to the point of dullness at times), but whether it was Raimi's fault or his own, I never felt that his performance was consistent.  I think a lot of that came down to Raimi making Peter at times a caricature who never felt "right" as a character.  It's hard to put into words...but it's a feeling that always gnaws at me when I watch him in these films.

As far as I'm concerned, the best thing about his performance is the art it inspires:

I don't have any animosity towards Garfield, his demeanor in interviews is incredibly likeable, and he's a plenty good actor.

That said, I have an instant, irrational hatred towards his Peter Parker.  I don't understand it, and it's kinda scaring me, how much I don't like this version of the character.  His every expression seems like he just farted, and he's trying really hard to think of someone else to blame it on, and it makes his brain hurt (AKA, the Lautner look).

It's hard to out weird-face Maguire, but he's managing.

Oh, give the guy a break. It's real hard to be a cinematic crier.

I love love LOVE The Fountain, but Hugh Jackman is a real shit cinematic crier.

That scene in SM2 when Maguire is on the rooftop running towards the camera his face seems to age 60 years. That scene never fails to take me out of the movie.

HAHAHAHAHA!  What's wrong with his faaaaaace???

The devianartist's description of the piece...

Spider-Man 2. The scene where he's trying to get his powers back. "Strong focus on what I want". Then, this face.

And that is why it is the greatest movie ever.

Fun Fact: Andrew Garfield's running face won't have nothin' on Tobey's.

Little did the makers of the new Spidey film know, that the most interesting thing they would create is a new appreciation for Tobey Maguire's gurning powers...

Just in case anyone is still remotely interested in this film, and hasn't seen this (it's a bit old) better look at The Lizard via leaked action figure images. Looks like utter shit.
