"Hummmmummumum...  ... ... JAMES HORNER????"

I don't know why I thought it was Craig Armstrong.  James Horner doing a Spider-man movie.  I'm very curious to hear how this'll turn out.  Not particularly hopeful.  Just very curious.

Well, next to no chance there'll be any bagpipes or Sissel nonsense.  Unless it turns out Peter's parents were part Scots-Irish or something.

And as someone else aptly said, chances are we've pretty much heard pieces of the score before in Horner's other works.  He can't write a villain/danger theme...it's always the same 3 to 5 notes played by the brass section.

OMG...I'm now having visions of the trailer re-cut with the Titanic score in the background...and "You're here, there's nothing I fear!" swelling when Peter and Gwen are on-screen together.  Or maybe when he saves that boy from the burning car.  Yeah, when he saves the boy from the car.  OMG.

I don't know whether to laugh or hide in terror.  :)

Here's bits and pieces of James Horner's score:

So far?  I adore it.

I like it, and it doesn't have the trappings of a usual James Horner score.

Sounds like Horner attempting Elfman. Really, the mimicry is kinda obvious right off the bat. With some Catch Me if You Can thrown in. Which is to be expected; Horner's the biggest score swindler in the business. Even his early great stuff was basically born out of him being told by directors that they wanted a Jerry Goldsmith feel.

And you know the trumpet three note signal of approaching danger will be showing up at some point. Don't ever doubt it.

I got the Elfman sound right off the bat as well. Usually when it comes to Horner he tends to rip off himself.

As long as they have a strong theme I'm good.  The Avengers, the first Spidey flicks, Cap Thor, Iron Man...  They all have strong themes.

I am pretty hard pressed to be able to hum a single one of those themes in my head.

I thought CAPTAIN AMERICA had the first honest-to-goodness memorable superhero theme since the Burton Batmans. THOR had a theme but it was so generic I can't recall it. The Elfman Spider-Man theme I know just because I've seen the films so many times; it's actually a bunch of meandering bullshit.

I never understood how easily hummable means good.  Have you ever tried to hum Danny Elfmans Batman?  That shit's a work out.

Thor.  Very big Nordic warrior stuff, war drums, but also noble and beautiful.  Gorgeous theme.

PERFECT.  Very Superman John Williamsy.  Nails the gee wiz whimsy of the character, as well as the stars and stripes aspects without being too nostalgic or crazy.

This is the hardest one to defend as a traditional theme, but Iron Mans guitar rock meets violin orchestra is PERFECT for the character, which is what these are all about.  It's also fucking PIMP.  Out of all the characters Tony Stark has always had the most luck with music, be it ACDC or this wonderful soaring theme.

"Handles like a dream."

Yes, Emma, I will marry you. Please stop sending the not-so-subtle signals on national broadcasts. You've worn me down, you nerdy minx.

She had me at touching of genitals.. God damn Leno gives a terrible interview.

Spider-Man talking on a cell-phone! DIFFEEEERENT!

If he could afford to make that suit and his webbing, he could afford a blu tooth ear piece.

I've seen all of these films multiple times, and the only theme that's clicking in my head is Spider-Man's.

I could not, but I like how that scene was shot.  Felt a lot more real then any of the previous Spider films.

I really dug that chase clip. I like how they've downplayed Spider-Man's powers a bit, and he seems more weighted while he's swinging. It looks more efforted than it did in the previous three films, and I like that. Really like the interaction with the environment as he's moving, too -- he's part of the set, as opposed to gliding over it.

The red lights on the shooters are still dumb as shit, though.

That's your fault, not the movies.

Oh, poppycock. Those movies don't have great scores. If anything, Captain America's is ok, but the main theme is warmed-over horn section BS. Thor's I like, but it's more of the post-Batman Begins staccato reverb. And Iron Man has Tom Morello wailing over some generic studio drums with terrible acoustics, really awful shit. The less said about how The Avengers hand-me-down anthemic theme is a disappointment, the better.

Musically, they're pretty awful, and, more importantly, there are ZERO points in those movies where there's perfect music/action synthesis. Maybe with that 360 shot of The Avengers, but even then, it feels kind of forced.

I wouldn't call them awful, but they're certainly not extraordinary. Of the superhero genre the real stand outs for me are John Williams SUPERMAN theme and the BATMAN theme both by Danny Elfman and Elliot Goldenthal. They're the only ones that grabbed me. Everyone else for the most part has ranged from pretty good to generic.

That was pretty great.  Liked how it all came together - the practical stunt work, Peter's comments, him getting on the ground a bit more and stumbling around a bit.

Yes.  When someone's arguing films have memorable themes, the fact I can't remember a note of the scores after seeing each film at least three times is clearly on me.  It's not at all possible that they just aren't particularly memorable or anything.

To put it simply, flippin' X-Men 3 has a more memorable soundtrack than The Avengers, Iron Man, or Captain America.

This is a whole "my subjective opinion is an objective fact" thing now isn't it.

I just hope we all understand this conversation is jokey and bullshitty and not "I'm getting offended and angry."

I have more invested in the Peter Parker/Gwen Stacy romance from the TV spots alone, than I had in the Peter Parker/Mary Jane relationship after all three Raimi movies.

Garfield and Stone have some solid chemistry.  I've always been more interested in Peter/Gwen.

Well there you go, exactly the reason I thought the snout wasn't always going to be a thing. I can't be down on him talking, it sounds perfectly fine to me, and if this was Raimi, everyone would be fine with it.

FilmNerdJamie, That was...Spectacular!  It takes a true...WEBBhead, to direct an...Amazing Spider-Man Film!

Still don't like the snout/face.

I guess in the new vid game, they're running with the gene-splicing angle:

Maybe he hates having to bring a second pair of shoes for his tap dancing class.

So dumb.  It's hard to look at costume so already crazy and make it dumber.

Yeah, the Lizard talking sounds perfectly fine and the lack of a snout didn't bother me in those clips.  A nice compromise between Ifans and a more monstrous voice.  I was actually worried that they might try keeping him mute, so the fact that he obviously remains intelligent is encouraging.

I don't know I'd necessarily say that this looks bad to me, but I feel like I've already seen 75% of the film thanks to marketing alone. That makes me uncomfortable.

Yeah, this. They've now released so much of the film via clips, trailers and whatnot there seems to be little reason to seek it out at the theater, over waiting for the fall video release...or skipping it entirely.

Maybe, but I bet Raimi would've kept him in the lab coat.

Sony is scared that they have a dud on their hands and they are throwing everything they've got out there in the hopes that it'll draw people in. This isn't conjecture, for the record. Heard it from multiple sources. I have also heard that the movie isn't bad per se, just not the home run the studio felt they needed. Which is absolutely true.

The whole reboot thing is shooting themselves in the foot because I can see how they would think this might boost ticket sales, but they're probably making their situation worse.

Not really. They've been a lot of marketing. But most of the footage is just reused stuff from the Trailers.

I am still watching this.

A screening was held today.  Reactions on Twitter have been uniformly positive so far.

I feel so "You're not my real daddy!" saying this, but Raimi probably would've put a guy in a suit, done up some animatronics, gotten some puppeteers, and saved the CGI for stuff like the Lizard running across the ceiling at sixty miles per hour. And you would've absolutely believed there was a seven-foot-tall lizard beating up a guy in a red and blue costume.
