Cruise is determined to take a journey into the outer reaches

I'm not familiar with the graphic novel, but this in lieu of GDT's Lovecraft chaps my ass (course, ENEMY MINE + WALL-E is probably an easier sell). Hopefully it'll turn out worth it in the end.

100 million vs. 300 million. Considering the box-office ass-kicking that Universal has taken for more risky fare ( ie: Scott Pilgrim),  I can understand why they're playing it safe. Don't like it, but I understand it.

Kudos to Universal I like their style but they are still taking some huge risks.

Stupid but ballsy.

Cool concept. I'll take that journey with Cruise.

Sounds interesting, but apparently Cruise is also talking to Del Toro about PACIFIC RIM. But as they are filming at the same time I don't see how it could work.

I'd hate to be the executive who greenlit a Tom Cruise starring vehicle after Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol bombs.

Why do you think it will bomb? There's a lot of positive buzz about it. And it's all about the marketing anyway.

For MOUNTAINS? Don't remember hearing that big figure. But GDT deserves it IMO. Regardless of what the bean-counters say.

Yep.  Apparently Universal wanted GDT to either keep the 300 million budget and tone it down to PG-13.............................................or keep it R, but take a big chunk out of the budget.

I've said it before...........................I hate that Mountains was dropped, but I understand it.  While it had the star-power of Cameron and Cruise on board, a 300 million dollar R-rated horror film is not an easy sell, especially when the studio being asked to bankroll it has taken some recent huge hits on risky projects that ended up tanking or badly underperforming.  Lovecraft and Guillermo Del Toro might be household names to the geek community, but they don't really mean diddly to general audiences.  Add on top of that the fact that none of GDT's films have even really made a decent profit (most have bombed) and you can see why Universal backed out of the project.  As painful as the whole ordeal is, it makes sense.

I really hope that GDT gets to make At the Mountains of Madness the way he wants to someday.  I just have a feeling that it won't happen for quite awhile.

Personally, I think he could make it for alot less. GDT's a whiz for getting the most out of a buck. But I can see why Universal doesn't want to take that big of a risk. I don't like it though. :(

I don't think anyone likes it.  Considering the risks they've taken in the past, I'm willing to bet that many of the execs that said "no" to the project weren't all that happy to do so.

Not counting Cruise's salary, I don't see why he couldn't get it made for 100 million. Look at the things he pulled off with Hellboy 2, and some of the amazing effects in 2012(for instance), which wasn't nearly as expensive as it looks.

There are almost never 3 figure horror film budgets. 300 million give me a break nobody would do that.

GdT does not equal box office and neither does Cruise. I respect both but that is something that just won't happen.

If this movie doesn't  come through, Cruise would need to think twice before getting attached to another big budget horror film.
