Torchwood: Miracle Day - Page 3

So, "new app: thermal imaging" was I the only one who thought that was the stupidest thing they heard in a while? How does that work? Does it build new pieces of serveillance equipment into your phone as you download it, so that your camera suddenly detects heat?

My mind was making Davies connections in this episode because of the Two Months Later thing, up to the point where I expected the Blessing to be the Face of Boe, having experienced such a horrible time during his unending existence that he decided to travel back in time, kill himself as Captain Jack and make the entire world immortal to experience the suffering he did.

I'm not sure if that says more about Davies' plotting or myself.

Nope. That was indeed a whole new level of stupid. Even by this season's standards.

That was so, so RTD.

Bombastic.  Sort of stupid.  Big 'easy' fix that the villains are happy to reveal.

But you know what?  I dug it.  Was on the edge of my seat for a good chunk of the hour.  Absolutely loved Rex and Jack 'sacrificing' themselves to end the miracle.  Gwen killing Jack was marvelous.  Esther dying just as cruel writer's trick... great.

But I'm disappointed RTD pulled his punch.  It was such a wonderful, big, silly, cruel ending -- the sort of thing Torchwood, Children of Earth especially, excels at -- and then it gets wiped away for the silly epilogue.  Which, admittedly, was a totally fun cliffhanger for another season.  But how depressing would it be if the one time Torchwood goes for the cliffhanger, it isn't renewed?

In the end, I'd call Miracle Day a disappointment.  But it came into its own, and I really enjoyed it by the end.  It just wasn't Children of Earth.

Best lines:

"Oh, fuck!"

"How much bloody lipstick can you wear?!"

I love you, Gwen Cooper.

Okay, i can honestly say this season was a HUGE disappointment, but god damn those last two episodes were fun.  if you ask me, you coulda just run episodes 1, 2, 9, & 10, and left out all the other shit, and had an amazing season.  I mean, the show was still incredibly ridiculous on pretty much all levels - from the earth's blood-sucking vagina (it gives life, get it?), to the thermal imaging iphones, to the guards who didn't haul Rex out of there the moment he revealed he transfused all of Jack's blood into him... but for some reason I found myself not caring about that stuff in the last two episodes.

So I'm ending the season on a high note of enjoyment.  It was not at the level of Children of Earth, for sure, but it could be said it was better than the other 2 seasons of Torchwood.

A few thoughts...

What was Oswald Dane's real purpose on this show?  I mean, they coulda gotten anyone to strap a bomb to themselves.  I didn't feel like Oswald had an arc or a purpose.  i thought it woulda been interesting if he had somehow joined Torchwood at the end of the day, but he was content to just blow up some old chick.  I guess you could argue that him seeing The Blessing made him more prone to suicide, but still... his storyline seemed kinda superfluous in the end.

I didn't like that they killed off Esther.  I mean, I guess I should be used to seeing Torchwoodies bite the bullet by now, and Esther was pretty useless, but damn, she was nice to look at!

I enjoyed seeing Jilly Kissinger get back in contact with the Families.  I think she could be a great villain and the setup of the Three Families as being the new "Big Bad" for Torchwood was cool.  I'll be interested to see what they have for Plan B.

And the cliffhanger was great!  Rex as an immortal is absolutely hilarious.  He's like the anti-Jack now in all aspects.  That's going to be an interesting development if they do another season.

A few questions though...

Why did Rex feel it was necessary to hide the fact they were still alive and that they transfused Jack's blood into Rex from Jack and Gwen?

Why'd the CIA wait so long to run that trace to find the mole?  You'd think they coulda run that thing while they were waiting for Rex to get in contact.

Why did all those guys who lead the Torchwood team to the Blessing destroy all the blood packets?  I mean, the blood wasn't special, so why'd they need to destroy it?

How do the Three Families keep making people blow themselves up?

What role did Phicore have to play in the greater aspect of things?  They just kinda disappeared as a subplot after a while.

Anyway, I'm nit-picking.  Kudos to the last two episodes.  Made me glad I stuck with the show.

One of the biggest plot holes is, if the Blessing used Jack's blood to sort of broadcast immortality, why did Jack become mortal?  It's not like a flip was switched and everything reversed like it originally seemed.

Had a few massive issues with how Danes was presented and apparently I'm the only person in the world who was amused at how insanely conspicous that CIA mole was and actively cheered at her shooting Rex when he called her name.

And if Jack's immortality was the template, then why was everybody a Series 2 Owen style zombie instead of having Jack's regenerative abilities?

And why didn't everyone turn gay?

I would like to see The Doctor's reaction to Rex being another immortal. I'm done with Torchwood, but I would like to see Jack guest star on Doctor Who.

Simon, let me take your logic one step further. Jack's blood should have made people such horny bisexuals, that a world wide orgy would have instantly broken out. It would be Plato's Retreat on a global scale.

OH. MY. GOD. THE. SPEECHES!

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, shutthefuckuplaready!

This was a textbook case on how to brutally murder any sense of momentum the climax managed, against all odds, to pick up. Holy shit.

Watched the finale, and I can safely say that I hated this season, for reasons that have already been covered. However, I DID want to commend Spike's reviews, which I really enjoyed in spite of my problems with the show. I'm looking forward to more of his writing on the site.
