Booking Midnight Movies???

Been a while since I posted in these parts, but this seems like the place to go to ask this:

I've been tossing around the idea of booking a midnight movie (Evil Dead 2, actually) at this cool as hell local theater. I've contacted the venue about it and I'm still researching what goes into such an undertaking, but the biggest hurdle right now comes in the form of actually licensing and procuring the reels.

I've never done this, have no idea where to go about finding old reels for this kind of show. I'm hoping that there's someone out there in internetland that has done something like this that might be able to drop a little science on me and point me in the right direction.

I haven't done this yet, but I can point you in the right direction to people who have.

Go to <a href="http://www.exhumedfilms.com" target="_blank">www.exhumedfilms.com</a>

This is the website to a group guys who put together shows about once a month or so in the Philly area. They are pretty good with getting back to you with emails....Try emailing them and asking. They've put together some great shows over the past few years when it comes to older horror movies and foreign movies. They should be able to help you!

Oh man! Right on! Someone linked me to that site a long time ago when I first started tossing this idea around but I totally forgot what they were called.

A million thanks!

Let us know how it goes, and what you find out, man. I think we'd all like to know how to do that.

It's actually pretty easy and not all that expensive (though depending on the movie.) At my old theatre I showed midnight flicks for about a year before I settled into having a Rocky Horror cast for the following year and just stuck with that. Where I'm at now is sadly a bit more upscale and shows wouldn't really fly. oh well.
Anyway, if the films are major studio releases, each studio has a repertory department in charge of their old films. These are usually about $150 to book for a week and depending on who it is, they'll also get a percentage of the box if it goes over a certain amount. (you'll also have to pay for shipping the print cans out.) Older films (we're talking 30's 40's 50's etc) will sometimes only be let out (if they have them for rental) for exhibitors with reel-to-reel projectors. Theatres use the platter system now and everytime you build a print for show and then tear it down a frame will usually get cut at the heads and tail of each reel so the studios want to avoid that on their more classic films.
As for flicks like Evil Dead, Re-Animators, etc, I found that there are plenty of independant film buyers/bookers out there that have their own libraries but as these prints may be harder to find, they'll cost more. I didn't check out that link that was there, I'm sure they've got plenty of places you could go to. I think the only indie one I used was Kit Parker and they were usually around $250-$350 a week and they did demand a percentage of the box.
If you don't mind 16mm and you or your local theatre has a projector somewhere in its booth then those prints would be much cheaper to rent though the quality isn't as good as 35mm and depending on the theatre's throw the picture probably wouldn't fit the screen. (I know I personally buy a cpl of horror film prints on 16mm each year and watch em with friends on the big screen each Halloween after I shut the theatre down.)
It's been a couple of years since I did any of this booking myself, and I'm sure that the link posted probably has more helpful info as I guess those guys do it now, but if you need any help or have any questions feel free to email me.
