On collaboration, tone, and the third dimension.

Interesting, I believed that this film was to be converted to 3D.

I just watched the making of THE AFRICAN QUEEN and apparently John Huston didn't expect such a charming and funny tone until after he started filming and witnessed the chemistry between the two leads. He was going to kill Charlie and Rosie off at the end (or for sure at least have them fail) and then after much deliberation/collaboration, decided they write a new more upbeat ending. Now, I understand this isn't THE AFRICAN QUEEN and this isn't John Huston, but...

Nevermind. Tim Burton's got one tone. QUIRKY & CREEPY (QUIRKREEPY?)

To expect anything else is pure folly.

Just guessing (or more likely, wishful thinking), but that "ethereal tone" Burton says he's going for might be the vibe he and Depp got as a kid watching the show. Pairing that with Eva Green's previous statement of the film being "like a stage play," and it sounds like maybe they're trying to capture or carry over or re-interpret that never-quite-realistic, summer stock, live-to-tape feel of the original, and 3D is/would be extremely detrimental to this intended tone. But again, just guesswork.
