I was very excited to see the American Reunion movie. I saw American Pie just after college and remembered it was quite funny. Jim, Michelle, Oz, Heather, Stifler reunite for their high school...

Around the time the Coens were between Intolerable Cruelty and Ladykillers, there was talk of them teaming with Hugh Jackman in a more modern-day Tarzan adventure. I refuse to see any further Tarzan films until this impossibly awesome dream project happens one day.

I'd completely forgotten he'd been doing the Footloose remake, and was starting to tap my foot waiting on his next entry on Memphis Music. I believe he said he had ideas for 5 in total, with country or rock-a-billy being the next entry (rap, check; blues, check). As a big fan of both Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan...
Tarzan? WTF, Craig? I guess it's hard out there for a working director.

I am definitely up for a...Tarzan film! This new Tarzan should skip that more realistic...Lord Greystroke approach in favor, of more...Swinging with his not plain...Jane!

I second the desire for more pulp elements. We've seen the standard original told before many times.

Either they go in the direction of wild pulp adventure, or they go the jungle western route like in Tarzan's Greatest Adventure (starring the baddest Tarzan ever, Gordon Scott... curious if you've ever seen this one, Elisabeth): No nonsense, no origin story, no romantic subplots, no monkey sidekicks, just a rather Ramboesque Tarzan protecting his domain from violent scumbags. I'd see that.

I have not, I'm ashamed to say. Netflix doesn't seem to have it, but I'll go on the hunt. A jungle Western sounds like the ideal approach though.

Not the cheapest option, but it is available as a Warner Archive made-to-order DVD-R from their store. If you do find it, watch for a young Sean Connery as one of the bad guys.
It's a very different kind of Tarzan film, and a really exciting 50s action movie in its own right. I'm surprised it doesn't have more of a cult following. Gordon Scott did the character a bunch of times, this was by far his best and the only one I would recommend trying to hunt down. He wasn't the next Brando or anything (a bodybuilder/actor like Steve "Hercules" Reeves, i.e. one of the guys who paved the way for the Slys and Arnolds of this world), but he brought a charisma and physicality to the role here that was perfect. A kind of intelligent, grudgingly civilized, very dangerous Tarzan.
When he passed away a few years ago, I found this interesting article about Scott and how he spent his final years living with a fan. Still can't decide if it's one of the saddest post-Hollywood stories I've ever read, or one of the sweetest.
