It's definitely going to be tethered. Games will run off the system, not the pad. I guess you'll be able to take it as far as the signal connecting the two stretches.

Aye. It's still a controller. It only looks like a portable device.

But I mean the tethering you speak of... is wireless, correct? E3 demos of new gadgets are often wired/locked down even when the final product will be wireless.

It most certainly does. Ken Rolston was lead designer for Morrowind but left Bethesda after his influence was hugely diminished during Oblivion.

Good thing it comes out next year and not at the end of this year, gotta save some treats for 2012.

Don't know what the hell is up with Hitman: Absolution though, No David Bateson, no Jesper Kyd and most of the original team is gone at IO, leaving the guy who was the lead designer for Kain and Lynch 1&2 in charge...

Its wireless but totally dependent on the console to operate.

I don't really see how anyone could think this would catch on in the same way the Wii did.  There is just no obvious hook to it.  "You see, the controller is giant and has a screen on it" isn't going to sell well.  Not saying that it couldn't be used by someone, just that it doesn't really offer the accessibility and true innovation that made the Wii successful.  Most obviously of all is the fact that it's a device that both of their competitors would b able to easily duplicate, Sony with either Android devices or the NGP and Microsoft with Zune, Windows, or Windows Phone 7 type devices.

I guess it doesn't help that everytime I see the Wii U controller that I have to laugh at how stupid it looks and how reminded I am of the Dreamcast's VMUs.  Those really worked out well too.

The VMU was actually a really clever idea that just never got utilized the way it should've been. Most important thing Nintendo should've taken away from that, though, was the fact that VMUs were the size of a value pack of gum.

I wish Nintendo would just leave the hardware biz like Sega, of course they are way too profitable as a console manufacturer. I've been a lifelong Nintendo fan, but every console since the SNES has gone in an increasingly bizarre direction. I'm just not their demographic anymore I guess.

I keep feeling like this wouldn't even have been an issue had Nintendo played nice with the 3rd parties during the Gamecube's run. That was a fantastic little system that was just criminally undersupported. I feel like that thing failing fucked up Nintendo more than anything.

As opposed to the same shit every generation with a graphics boost?  I don't always agree with what Nintendo is doing, but at least they are trying to push new things.  How often do Sony and Microsoft innovate?

Microsoft's pretty new to the console world, and they've got: true online integration, achievements, and Kinect off the top of my head.

I gave Nintendo credit for the Wii. Crap implementation, but a solid concept. They get no credit for this abomination. Sometimes there's a reason no one has been asking for something...

I want innovative titles from 3rd party developers not wacky control schemes. Go make a game based on a crazy idea, but you cannot make an interface that will be better than a controller.

True online intergration and achievements are definitely Microsoft's.  I'd give them the hard drive, too.  But those were ten years ago.  Kinect is just motion control taken another step.  (Which I actually give credit to; at least Microsoft took it further, as opposed to Sony just ripping it off wholesale.)

This is an abomination?  It's a slightly over-powered PS3/Xbox 360 with a touch screen in the controller.  The touch screen will give developmers the ability to create a number of different control schemes.  Personally, I think that's great.  You have the potential for really new, innovative concepts without knee-capping normal fare like the Wii did.

So to recap:

-It's finally on a level to match the prowess of Microsoft and Sony.

-The controller is a much more standard design.*

-*while adding an element that promotes innovation without hurting standard control.

-Nintendo's moving to a more Xbox Live-like online system.

Why is this an abomination, exactly?

I was referring to the controller specifically. It looks like Dr Moreau crossbred a gamepad with a tablet device, while losing the best parts of each. Oh, and the Wiimote is still standard as well. It's just a bizarre and awkward scheme.

It has the standard-since-1991 Super Nintendo layout and is apparently light and comfortable to hold.  So what's the problem with it?  I'd have an issue of it felt like the original Xbox controller (which was my main worry when I first saw it), but most who've laid hands on it say it's a breeze to hold.

Get ready to start frothing, people. Wii U graphics chip outed as last generation Radeon

OH MY GOD

The Wii-U could have advanced alien technology from another galaxy that produces graphics that make Crysis 2 look like Custer's Revenge -- but if all it's being used for is another damned Zelda game, then what's the difference?

For me, the last generation of consoles has been about two things: what company is licensing the games I want to play, and if those games are being handled properly. They dropped the ball with the Wii, and it'll be well into the console's lifespan before we know if they drop the ball with the Wii-U.

My favorite thing about them using that graphics chip is they say it's better than the 360 and PS3's. No fuck it's better, it better damn well be seeing as the other two systems are about 7 or so years old at this point (development time and the like factored in). It should blow away the big two, not be a little better. Jesus.

Also, keep in mind that "better" means next to nothing if the lead platform for the vast majority of multiplatform titles remains the 360.

How much further will graphical improvements take gaming? So far the improved graphical out put has only produced a greater ratio of FPS's.

Graphical improvement will only take us so far, but more powerful consoles should allow for better AI (if developers put in the effort) which will take us to the future of gaming. The first FPS that isn't a turkey shoot, but has intelligent enemies that flank and strategize will revolutionize this otherwise tired genre.

As soon as we get a fully and realistically destructible city, that will be enough for me. I want to play Red Faction: Guerrilla in Liberty City.

Zelda is by no means bad, but that beard is fucking "Mel Gibson"-crazy.
