His usual confidence is replaced entirely with false bravado here. He clearly knows that Loki could likely snuff him out at a whim if he chose and is trying to play him.

Devin's latest Tweet: "That'll do, Joss, that'll do."

HOT DOG, WE HAVE A WEINER! (I think?)

Either Devin was cornered by Joss Whedon telling a really obnoxious story after the premier, or he left satisfied with the film

And Beaks seems mixed

Huh?

Beak's "I'll deal with the first two acts in my review" seems like it could go either way, but I'm guessing it'll concern issues he had with the structure.

@GermainLussier:  I'd tweet about The Avengers but my body is still recovering from non-stop geeking out.  So, so, so much fun (for the most part).

So is Hawkeye just a dude with a bow and arrow?  What's his deal?

The fact that people seriously want Bay to have directed this movie kind of blows my mind. Never mind hyperkinetic cameras or exploitation or whatever, Bay cannot tell an actual story to save his life. Unless Whedon had a gun to his head, he would have rendered any script given to him into his usual gibberish. That is what he does. Some supremely talented folks worked on the script to Armageddon. Doesn't matter. All you're ever going to get out of Bay is SPLOSION BOOBIES.

I've been trying to avoid watching too much of the Avengers ads so I can't critique the visuals. But I'd rather a mediocre-looking movie written and performed to the level of quality Whedon is capable of than a gorgeous looking movie that plays like it was written by 13-year-olds. Which is to say, 90% of the blockbuster movies made these days.

Amen brother.

Did Devin just confirm the Chitauri as the villains?!  That was my guess!

There is some in between room there.  It doesn't have to be just either mediocre looking great movie, or spectacular looking shit movie.

I wont knock people for hating Bay, I don't love him enough to waste energy defending him.  I do like him as an action director though, and kept on a tight leash, he can do great action work...his best work is done when he is on that leash (Bad Boys, The Rock, Pearl Harbor plays like a comic book version of the tragedy, sort of befitting Avengers in a sense IMO).  He's not my top choice, I just threw his name out there not really giving it much thought.  I think you could definitely get a better action director with a great cinematic style who wouldn't fuck the movie up though.

I just cannot see his style working well with Whedon's script at all.  I'm laughing to myself right now trying to imagine Bay interpreting Whedon's sense of humor and keen understanding of character dynamics.  Even when he's worked with better scripts, Bay has never fully been on a "leash" - he would have interpreted the script in a lot of misguided ways, I think.  In some ways, we would have gotten an Avengers saddled with his faults had he been involved - and Bay's had more than enough opportunity to advance the interests of the soulless modern blockbuster without handing him this film too.

That's fine, I'm actually not that familiar with Whedon's style to be honest, hence the Bay recommendation.  I have a soft spot for Bay that clearly others do not.  I think there are far worse action directors.

Bay can do action, but I wouldn't trust him with the subtle characters moments and humor that Whedon absolutely sings with.  Besides,  the action looks very Bay in scope in the trailers so far.

Saw the movie tonight. Whedon did not need Bay. He did juuuust fine on his own.

Hulk smash.

Well he used to be able to do it. Now he shakes the camera and all the robots look alike and blend in with the scenery.

Thanks, Josh!

Just rewatched Iron Man 2.  At the end when Fury is debriefing him, there is a digital world map in the background with current "events" marked.

- One marker is over New York, obviously highlighting the events at the Stark Expo against Whiplash.

- One marker is over New Mexico (Thor).

- One is over California (Incredible Hulk), highlighting the incident at Berkley between Hulk and Blonksy/Ross.

- One over Africa, obviously meant for Wakanda and the Black Panther movie whenever we get one.

There are two more markers though.  One seems to be over Norway and the other over the lower Atlantic Ocean.  So what the hell are these two for?  Cap would have been found around the North Pole region and would, in theory, be somewhere around North America.  So what's going on in or around Norway?  It'd be too early for Loki's arrival, as the events of Thor would still be occurring at this time.  And what is meant to be happening in the Atlantic Ocean between South America and Africa?

Very interesting.

The early buzz on this is absolutely glowing.  My excitement has officially hit the noz.

EDIT: You know you're an absolute dork when you work out to We're in This Together and pretend to be Captain America.

The Dream Master lived in Norway..But I had to use google to remember where. It was on the coast of Norway...but really...Dream Master? That marker has to be about something else.

Tonsberg, Norway was where The Red Skull found The Tesseract. The same town was featured in the prologue to Thor. Maybe it still holds some significance?

Also, Hot Diggity Dog do I need this film in my life right now...

I'm ASSUMING they have something to do with films they'd like to make in the near future................just like the marker over Wakanda.  I'm just not sure what those places would or could have anything to do with Dr. Strange, Runaways, or Ant-Man; which are the projects that seem to be the furthest down the pipeline.  So is it something else?

Bucky?  HYDRA?  Zola?  Red Skull?  AIM?

It will be interesting to see if either of those markers are explained in Avengers.  Unless something is found in either location though, I suspect they might remain a mystery until the first batch of post-Avengers flicks roll out.  Everything in that room seems to have a purposes.  The aforementioned markers, the TV news footage of the Hulk incident at Berkley, etc.

I'd find it very odd if the same could not be said about these two markers.  Regardless, it gives us something to talk about for a bit.

Ambler, Hawkeye aka Clint Barton ran away from his home and joined the circus with his brother.  He is the top...Marksman in the Avengers. He uses arrows with all kinds of tech.  Exploding arrows, sonic arrows, bola arrows, net arrows (a capture net not the...internet).  He also fires Multiple arrows with ease! He has no superpowers, but is a decent brawler. He also fashions himself a ladies man, and has attempted to date...Scarlet Witch, Ms. Marvel, Valkyrie (when he was a...Defender), and he did date...Black Widow and married Mockingbird.

Remember Marvel Ultimate Alliance? My team was Black Panther, Blade, Luke Cage, and Storm. Just cuz.

I think Spidey and and Wolverine were recently added to the Avengers (whether or not it's appropriate) because they're all-stars. Look at the JLA - it's DC's A List. I think Marvel was going for that.

I'm floored you just pulled out a Marvel character I've never heard of, even more so that you know his country of origin was Norway.

Don't go in 3D. That's really all I think I can say at the moment.

Outside of stating that the 3D is pointless, the film is great, and that it completely redeems some of Marvel's lesser efforts; Devin also dropped another tweet that was simply one word...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Chitauri

So I guess Feige was lying after all?

Anyway, I don't think I've seen a bad reaction to it online yet.  Most seem to point towards it being Marvel Studios' best film to date.

If Avengers 2 isn't a Thanos picture, I would find a movie version of 1989's "Atlantis Attacks!" crossover suitably awesome and crazy.

Interesting that Beaks tweets suggest that this is the rare (first?) superhero movie where the strength of the third act overshadows problems with the first two.

It makes sense given that each Avenger is going to have to be introduced and some shoehorning done to get them together in the first act. It's got to be very hard to do elegantly, but I'll settle for fun.

So this "premiered" 3 weeks before it's release? Or was this a press screening?

Both. We were sent into an overflow theatre and Grauman's. The big guns where in the El Cap.

Word is that they finally got Hulk right. YAY! 'Bout freakin' time.

IMO he gets the best scene.

He also gets the best one-second unexpected gag.

I just want to gloat a bit more about totally calling the Chitauri... :D

Right. With that, I'm fucking off from the thread until I've seen the movie for myself. Here's looking forward to the Post-Release Discussion Thread!

From the moment we got our first peek I've thought Hulk would steal the show. Nice to hear it confirmed.

This is going to be the hardest, most torturous fortnight of my life.

I must be getting old or something because I have no anxiety over how close this is. I'm not even going to bother seeing it at midnight, if I can help it (re: crowds/arriving early).

Still excited, of course, but, as an old-school Marvel fan...

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

FUCK this Chitauri shit.

Marvel does indeed own the rights to that character.  They were previously sitting at Universal, but reverted back to Marvel when nothing was done with the property.  Jonathan Mostow had been attached for the longest time, but I haven't read diddly about it for awhile.  He's definitely the first character my mind went to on the Atlantic marker though.

As for Avengers 2?  There's all kinds of ways they could go.  A bigger, more cosmic film.  The route you mentioned.  A Masters of Evil-style team-up of villains that are still living (Loki, Red Skull, Abomination, etc.).  Or a combination of sorts.  It will be very interesting to see what is done with the stories for and who is introduced in the next batch of sequels.

Well, it's not like they arbitrarily went with the Chitauri. It's pretty clear they intended it to be the Skrulls and the legal issues got too complex. Which is kind of funny, since the Chitauri ARE the Skrulls. They literally just gave them a new name, one of many, and never showed them as green pointy-eared scarred-chinned monsters (and even then, it looks like the invading armies at least have an old-school Marvel look that the Chitauri never had).

Me, I'm just relieved it's aliens and not Frost Giants.

I'd go with adapting either "Under Siege" or "Ultron Unlimited", but one storyline i would kill to see onscreen but never will get adapted is "Kang War", which is just pure epic, seriously, the big tiwst in that storyline is still mindbogging on every read.

Maybe it's time for a post-release thread? I'm getting nervous but can't look away.

Didn't know about the prospect of the possible villain till just now. I am refraining from using his name.

Yes, I know I'm a sissypants.

Today I booked a single holiday day at work. When my manager asked what I was doing that day, I just told her that I had important things to do.

It's no coincidence that it's the Friday on which The Avengers comes out.

I have nothing else to do on that day.

Man, as cool as all of these heroes are, there's just no beating turning into a ten foot tall rage monster and breaking shit.  It taps into the six year old boy in me who laughed insanely whilst smashing a lego town.  Cap telling Hulk to smash and Hulk smerking perfectly sums it up.
