Buying the Dead films on DVD

Okay. I don't have any of the Dead films on DVD. Not Night of the Living Dead, not Dawn of the Dead, not Day of the Dead. I plan to rectify this oversight very soon.

Therefore, I'm soliciting opinions on which of the many versions out there is the most solid disc to buy, for each of the three films. As far as the combination of overall presentation (transfer and sound) and features, which disc is the most bang for my bucks? I was going to put this in one of the DVD forums, but then it occured to me that for something this horror-centric I'd likely get more informed and reasoned opinoions here.

Thanks in advance for the help!

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD - The Elite Millennium Edition is probably the best way to go.

DAWN OF THE DEAD - If you can go multi-region, there's a UK edition with Tom Savini commentary and a Dutch version containing the director's cut, the Dario Argento cut, and Document of the Dead. However, Anchor Bay are bringing out a super boxset with all of the above and commentaries etc which is supposed to be out next year.

DAY OF THE DEAD - The new Anchor Bay Divimax edition is superb.

The esteemed Mr Fett is correct.

But I would hold off on any import purchase on "Dawn of the Dead", as Anchor Bay will release their new Special Edition in February, I believe.

I'll also add the 1990's George A Romero produced, Tom Savini directed version of "Night of the Living Dead" - while nowhere near the classic '68 version - is available from Sony in a great cheap Special Edition with commentary and a Behind the Scenes featurette.

Hellboy, is that the one with Tony Todd and the redhead from B5 in it?

Yeah, that's it. As far as NOTLD goes, I have a copy, I think its a Classic Movies" type of DVD, got it for six bucks. Doesn't have any extras, but it has the movie. I'm happy with it.

As Bamfra pointed out, yes.

BTW, Bamfra - lose the copy of the '68 version that you have (one of the many inferior Public Domain rip-offs) and get the Elite Millenium version as Fett has suggested.
It's the only one released that was approved and overseen by Romero. The transfer is the only one on the market telecined from the original negative. It has a number of great features, also.
Every other release compared to this one can be considered almost bootlegs.

Not to just agree with everythign Hellboy just said, but the difference between the Elite transfer and the PD stuff is night and day.

The Savini version is definitely worth seeing as an alternative universe version of NOTLD.

Yeah, I used to have a cpl of the different publich domain NOTLD of VHS way back when (they were like $2) and then I remember buying an Anchor Bay 2 tape version. Obviously the new Elite Mill. Ed. is the way to go, but that tape was a perfect example of how crappy those PD ones were. The tape started the movie with the shitty PD print and then in the first credit the screen washed over to the remastered print. It was such an amazing difference.

As for the Dawn SE...Is that still coming out here in Feb? I thought that big box set got pushed back. Wasn't it supposed to be out in R2 this last year?

The Dawn SE sets have been on Anchor Bay's Coming Soon page for at least two years. I hope the delay just means they are putting more work into the package. With the new Divimax process, Dawn could look even more spectacular. I'm getting ready to pop Day into my DVD player now. Yay!

I think I'll look into picking up the ME of Night.

So, the consensus is:

Grab the Elite Millenium Edition of Night of the Living Dead and the Anchor Bay Divimax of Day of the Dead, and pick up Savini's NOTLD while I'm at it, but wait for the Anchor Bay box set on Dawn of the Dead.

Cool. As of Saturday, your advice will be followed. Thanks, guys.

If Savini's NOTLD isn't available for 10 or less, I'd pass, cause I'm pretty sure that's what its going for these days.
