Finally bought a PS3, what game should I play next?

Hi guys, I've been a PC gamer since the late 80s, but finally caved in and bought a PS3 when LA Noire came out. I just finished LA Noire, and need some suggestions for my next game. There are so many great games in the PS3 old catalogue that I'm dying to try, it would probably take me years to complete them. These are some games that I shortlisted.

1. GTA4 - never played a GTA game in my life, but I like cinematic games.

2. MGS - Guns of the Patriots. I remember seeing trailers for this when PS3 was launched and was awed by the game.

3. God of war 3 - only ever played GOW on the PSP, thought it was decent .

4. Borderlands - I only play singleplayer games so the COD and battlefield series is out. But I hear borderlands has a solid singleplayer campaign.

5. Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 2  - played these on a dinky PC, so I don't mind replaying them on a HDTV with 5.1 surround.

6. Uncharted 1 and 2.

7. Heavy Rain

8. Red Dead Redemption

9. Fallout New Vegas

10. Infamous

11. Resonance of Fate JRPG - reviews place it better than final fantasy 13, but is it any good as an rpg?

12. Yakuza 4 - sounds like japanese GTA4 or is it?

13. Valkyria Chronicles - strategy game

It seems to me that Heavy Rain and the other Rockstar games would be too close to LA Noire, so maybe I should try something more actiony like Borderlands or God of War 3. What do you guys think?

I loathed Heavy Rain, but if you really liked L.A. Noire, you may like that one. I can't offer an opinion on Resonance of Fate. The Yakuza series is like GTA, but instead of killing rival gangsters, you'll be playing Mahjong and performing Sushi-eating minigames. MGS isn't my thing at all.

The rest are pretty great, especially Red Dead Redemption. I'd go with Mass Effect 2, though.

My vote is Red Dead Redemption. It's my favorite PS3 game of all time. It's long, so you'll get your money's worth. And a lot of variety. Just an overall AMAZING game.

If you want something really different than Rockstar style games, I'd vote for Uncharted 1 or 2 (both great, but 2 is better), Assassin's Creed 2, Borderlands, or Batman: Arkham Asylum.

And all these other than Batman are pretty lengthy, so you'll get your money's worth.

Get yourself Infamous. It's just a fun game all around.

Yakuza 3 and 4 are kind of nothing like GTA. They feel more like an Arcadey Shenmue, and it's chock full of really, really, odd mini-games. The combat system is amazing though, you can literally punch out peoples teeth, and the games are a lot of fun. But they're essentially a weird mix of Streets of Rage, Final Fantasy and Bishi Bashi Special.

When you're ready for a challenge, Demon's Souls will be waiting.

Play the Uncharted games. They are a completely different type of game than LA Noire, and they are the definition of "cinematic", especially the second one.

Start from scratch, get the God of War Collection.

Also, if you've been out of the gaming loop for this long, you owe it to yourself to get that Prince of Persia HD Collection as well. Three of the best games you'll ever play for 40 bucks.

Make Uncharted 2 your top priority, it's such a great experience.

I second all these recommendations.

Thanks for the recommendations all! I didn’t love LA Noire that much, got bored towards the end and hated the driving sequences. I love the period setting and the acting, but gameplay not so much. Since I really hated the driving parts of LA Noire, should I give GTA4 a miss? I keep hearing about how amazingly cinematic it is, but I suck at driving J

I rented Borderlands and had fun with it.  On the other hand, I tried the Killzone 2 demo and was completely lost – the learning curve was too high for someone completely new to PS3 shooters.

With regards to Uncharted 2, am I missing out if I don’t play Uncharted 1 first?

You should play the first Uncharted. It's a really fun game, and you'll get used to all the controls that are the same when you get around to the second one. It's also wildly addictive. When I got them, I just blazed through them in a couple of days.

I'm a GTA nut going all the way back to Vice City, so I'd say get GTA 4. You can get it for under 15 bucks on Amazon and its totally worth it.

I hope you're not like me and actually have time to play all these games. As someone who's married, works, and has a baby on the way I find it real difficult to make time to actually sit down and play these games!! :(

1) GTA4 is the best of the GTA franchise, and the driving is less stiff than LA Noire. Plus you don't have to worry about running over those pesky pedestrains since you're not a cop. And if you want cinematic but suck at driving.....then seriously check out Red Dead Redemption. I think just about everyone couldn't recommend it enough. It is Rockstar's finest hour.

2) forget the Killzone's. Killzone 3 is much better and easier to jump into, but still waaaay too short. The Killzone series was enjoyable while I played it, but once I'm done I didn't give them a second thought.

3) You don't HAVE to play Uncharted 1 before 2. It is a great game, and introduces all the main characters and gives you an idea of what the series and Nathan Drake is about........but it's a terrific game. Saying you dont have to play 1 to enjoy 2 is like saying you dont HAVE to watch Godfather 1 to enjoy Godfather part 2. On a scale of 1-10, Uncharted 1 is a 10, but Uncharted 2 "goes to 11".

i personaly like GTA 4 .but heavy rain had a very good story line.

I would definitely recommend playing Red Dead Redemption at some point, but I would probably start with something else before starting in on another Rockstar game. That said, Red Dead is a great game, a hundred times better than LA Noire. I would even say it is a hundred times better than GTA4, though some might disagree with me there.

I just wanted to add that if you get GTA4, get the complete collection version that comes with both DLC's (they're huge additions). I liked the Ballad of Gay Tony dlc a lot more than the main GTA4 game. For pure cinematic fun, Uncharted then Uncharted 2.

God of War Collection and 3. nuff said

There's not enough love for Batman: Arkham Asylum in this thread. Not only is it a fun, immersive game, but the controls are very intuitive and nicely suited to someone new to the PS3.

great game but its not a PS sexclusive

Half of the original list isn't exclusive to PS3 either. Batman Arkham Asylum is a great game, and so are a bunch of other third party games that are available on the system. As for why they weren't mentioned before, I think we've just been focusing on the games listed in the original post rather than suggesting a bunch of other games as well.

I would give Killzone 3 a shot even if you hated Killzone 2. Even if it's just a rental. I rememeber reading that Killzone 3 has a bunch of differant control layouts you can chose from and I know for a fact you can switch to the Call of Duty layout. Campaign, while on the short side, is very well put together and it's absolutely gorgeous. No game on the market looks as good as Killzone 3 IMO(yes I've played Crysis 2).

The top shooter franchise on ps3 is probably Resistance though. Resistance 1 and 2 both have very good stories and Resistance 2's campaign is a blast to play through. And imo Resistance 1's graphics have held better than any other launch title on ps3. They have some of the best and most unique weapons for an FPS too. Sometime this summer, Sony is going to release a collection of both games for 40 dollars.

If you like shooters with long campaigns, look no further than Crysis 2 and Riddick collection.

Other games I'd reccomend on PS3: Mortal Kombat(Fighting games are just better on ps3 imo), Infamous, Vanquish(runs alot better on ps3), Little Big Planet 2, Modnation Racers, Motorstorm Apocalypse, Heavenly Sword to name a few

I played many shooters on the PC, but man it's hard switching to a PS3 controller. Goodbye headshots! I'm happy if I can just hit the buggers.

Fighting games - not for me. I'm really looking for games with a good story - case in point I got seriously bored with Oblivion on the PC because it was too open and the overarching plot was barely there. I prefer more linear RPGs like Bioware's stuff where the story is stronger. I already played Mass Effect 2 on the PC, so it's not a must-play on the PS3. I'd rather try out other games first. Dragon Age 2 I heard isn't as good as the first.

Just like fighting games, platformers and driving games don't do anything for me. My personal preference is for RPGs, but I don't mind action games like God of War or Uncharted or shooters if there's a good story. I'm surprisingly enjoying Borderlands right now, probably because of the RPG elements more so than the story.

Demon's Souls is the best RPG on the system, and arguably the best game, provided you can cope with being challenged a little.

Give it a try.

My vote is for Red Dead Redemption.  It's the best game on your list.  I'm currently loving Fallout New Vegas, but if Oblivion was too open you won't really care for this either.
