I actually asked him about that at SDCC last year, and he was kind of snarky about it....

Snarky because he didn't appreciate your question?  Or snarky because he got why you would ask that?

Of course, it's not technically fair to think that all he's doing are these dull sci-fi/fantasy action movies.  He did that Charles Darwin movie a year or two ago that just didn't get much attention or distribution.  It's not completely his fault that we're only being pushed the movies where his talents seem wasted.

This is shaping up to be something really cool.  And, yes- Javert is a little easier on the throat than Valjean.

Oh ho ho ho ho ho... sorry.

I got taken to see Les Miserables on Broadway when I was 8, and I've seen it twice since, so I have a great affinity for the production. It's a really great story, and could make for a powerful film experience. While I kind of hate The King's Speech, I won't hold that against the director, as it kind of seems like his sensibilities might work with an adaptation of this sort, and I think having the strong narrative and great characters will hopefully negate any negatives he would bring. Hugh Jackman seems like a natural choice for Jean Valjean, and while I can't quite picture Paul Bettany as Javert, I'm sure that he'll do a great job as he's a man with talent to spare.

I like Paul Bettany mostly. Loved him in Master and Commander. Thought he was good in A Beautiful Mind. But, I dunno... I can't see why anyone would feel the NEED to rescue his career. He deserves better than the shitty back-to-back Scott Stewart Actionfest (and The Da Vinci Code), but how much better, exactly? If he was toiling away for a so-so procedural on one of those cable nets no one watched, I don't think it would be a major injustice.

Also, he was supposed to be starring with his wife in some half-stop-motion movie written by Guillermo Del Toro, I think it was called "Born." That would have probably won him a bit more favor with me. Did I just imagine that project? Or does anyone recall what I'm talking about?

Again, obvious casting is sometimes obvious because it's perfect. Bettany staring down Jackman in these two lead roles would be brilliant.

Both! I can't remember how I phrased it, but I was quite nice about it and he was like "You mean the TWO I've done?"

I guess he only counts the Stewart ones, but after The DaVinci Code, Creation, Legion, and Priest...how does he NOT see a pattern there? :P

He seemed genuinely miffed.  He was nice enough, and I joked "Oh well, to the Internet it seems like twenty" and then he laughed, but it really seemed to be a sore point.

Master and Commander and A Knight's Tale really earned him a very long pass from me. He stood out in The Young Victoria as well recently, I barely recognized him. Probably because he wasn't wearing a priest's robe or wings.

I'd argue that A Knights Tale and Master & Commander are the two biggest reasons we all keep rooting for the guy. So much god-damned wasted potential there.

So when is Bettany going to star in a Sting biopic?

He was also really great in Gangster No. 1. His role in that had me pulling for him to play the Joker in The Dark Knight when it was just the Untitled Batman Begins Sequel.

Exactly, and the range he showed between these role is great. Unhinged psycho, rascally comic relief? When he goes for it he's great as everything. This guy deserves so much better than having Kingdom of Heaven snagged from him by Orlando Bloom and being Tony Stark's computer.

Charles Darwin is a supernatural clergyman?!

To a Creationist maybe?

I love the guy, so if this takes him to the next level and gets to headline films (instead of being replaced by Bloom) then I'm all for it.
