Mom Sentenced For Spanking Child Sparks Debate On Discipline.

On Friday, a Texas judge sentenced Rosalina Gonzales to five years probation and ordered her to take parenting classes, after she admitted that she spanked her child. Corpus Christi's KZTV reports that Gonzales pleaded guilty to causing injury to a child, but prosecutors said the woman used her hand and did not leave bruises on the 2-year-old.

 

But 214th District Court Judge Jose Longoria left little doubt about what a modern parent is expected to do, while disciplining their child:

"You don't spank children today," said Longoria, "in the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children. You understand?"

 

Gonzales answered, "Yes, sir."

 

Gonzales currently does not have custody of the two-year-old victim or her other two children.

 

According to the Texas Attorney General's website, spanking is not illegal. "Texas law allows the use of force," it reads, "but not deadly force, against a child by the child's parent, guardian, or other person who is acting in loco parentis."

 

The website goes on to describe where the line between spanking and abuse might be. It seems the AG's opinion is that if it's in the buttocks, the parent uses their open hand, a brush or a belt and doesn't leave a "bruise, welt, or swelling," it's likely OK.

 

But Gonzales' case and especially what seemed like the judge's complete ban on spanking has ignited a great debate among parents on the Web.

I'm not really interested in the finer points of the case (what did she use, is there a history here, etc...).  What gets me is the position of the judge.  "You don't spank children today," said Longoria, "in the old days, maybe we got spanked, but there was a different quarrel. You don't spank children. You understand?"

 

Ha ha ha...What?  Besides being a blockheaded angle on the issue, the judge's laughable ruling (and editorializing lecture!) scorches because it forgets just how hypocritical it is.  "You don't spank children today"  Well, your honor, you also don't marginalize homosexuals today.  You don't demonize immigrants today.  The Supreme Cunt doesn't slink fatcat corporate favors into legal existence today!

 

Oh wait!

Anyone against spanking, I want you to do me a favor: Watch this. I want you to picture being locked in a room with that for 10 hours. You cannot escape. You cannot run. You cannot reason. You cannot speak. You have no tools. You have no means of rational, mammalian communication. It only gets louder.

 

HOWEVER.

 

You cannot kill it. You cannot insult it. You cannot shed its blood. It must live, and live in peace. With you. Forever. The doors will not open until you have gotten that thing to shut the fuck up. And your friends, family, and neighbors are watching from behind soundproof glass.

 

Now, offer me a solution.

No childern of my own but judging from when my nephews or niece throw a tantrum it's pretty fucking spot on, Justin. I instictively start searching for a crucifix and/or a weapon whenever this happens.

The thing about spanking is you only have to do it once, from then on the threat should be enough.  (or it was in my case anyway).

What a lightweight!  I was spanked with sticks and clothes-hangers.  Again and again.  You get used to it. 

 

AND THEN YOU LIKE IT.

 

That's when they start boring you with lectures instead.

I used to get spanked with wooden spoons, had one break on me after I had cut the shape of Snake Mountain into the cheap 80's vinyl roller window shades. Later on there came point in my childhood where I would have preferred to be spanked instead of being grounded. Shit I lost a month of my summer since I watched Terminator 2 at a friends house against my parents will, the wooden spoon sounded down right delightful after the first two days of that. Even early in life I was punished for being such a huge nerd.

What weak ass parent needs to use a weapon to spank a child? Ya got little Arnie Schwarzeneggers running around your house with rock-hard butts?

 

How does the coat hanger one even work? Do they straighten it out and use it like whip? Or is that primarily for punishing fetuses in the womb?

In the Closer household it was more of an eye-for-an-eye thing - if I hit one of my brothers with a ruler, said ruler would smack against my backside a handful of times.

Anyone ever fake the pain of the spanking? My father went to spank me with a belt once, missed and 85% of it hit the bed and not my buttocks.....I just remember going "no! no!.....huh?....uh...OW OW OW no more! please!".........think it was the only time in my life I outwitted my old man.

I can't imagine hitting my kid under any circumstance honestly. Loads of pro-spankers in this thread. Obviously, this case seems insane. The woman had her kiddos taken away, which is obviously worse for them than one public spanking. But, I don't know. Maybe this woman was wailing away on her kid. Maybe she had murder in her eyes. Maybe she was laughing throughout an extended spanking barrage. The article makes the judge seem a little nutty. But maybe this woman is violent. I imagine there's more too this than this short article gets to.

Could be, but the quote was "You don't spank children today!", not "You don't spank children that hard while strangers watch and laugh!"

I got the clothes hangers treatment too, and also remember myself being genuinely befuddled the one time my parents decided to take away privileges instead of giving me a whupping. To this day, I have no idea what put that thought into their heads.

Spanking has been proven effective as a means of controlling a child's behavior within the presence of the administering adult. In situations away from the administering adult, spanked children are not as well behaved (note: this applies to all other forms of punishment, though moreso to spanking). Also, spanked children more often engage in violent activity and are more likely to attempt to solve their problems with violence.

 

Personally, when I acted up, my father put me in a basket hold until I would obey. It was far more effective than the beatings from my step-father. The former punishment trained me to calm down and think rationally in situations where I am tempted to disobey others; the latter trained me to beat the fuck out of other little kids who disobeyed me. I don't see how anyone could be for spanking or any other form of punishment focused around physical pain.
