MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL TRAILER ACCOMPLISHES ITS MISSION

...and that mission is preview a damn fine-looking movie.

Between this and Killer Elite, two honest-to-goodness action movies are in my Top 5 Most-Anticipated for What's Left of 2011 (working on that title). Except that this one might turn out to be a genuinely good movie, to boot, aside from an ass-kicking one!

Looks pretty damned awesome from here.

Goddamn do I hope Brad Bird gets to be the guy to get one of these movies right.

Oh yeah, certainly looks like a lot of fun.

I really need to get around to watching the third film at some point.

wow, looks mint.

is the third one worth watching?

Well if you got through the second one, the third one should be a breeze.

And the trailer makes this look like... all of the other Cruise MI movies.

But I'm interested because Bird's behind the camera.

I actually have a soft spot for the second one.

"I DO BELIEVE I'VE BROKEN HIS BLOODY JAW!"

Hilarious. Woo shoots the whole thing as if was an Australian Tourism commercial. Anthony Hopkins shows up as Cruise's boss. Along with Dougray Scott hamming it up all the way.

Mission Impossible 3's like Christina Hendricks showing up on your doorstep as a gelatinous puddle of meat and organs. Something holding this mess together would be really, really great.

As it is, all the elements are there, and perfectly executed, but there's no reason to care.

That was one well done trailer.  Definitely looking forward to this now.  I was legitimately obsessed with the first movie for a while in high school, despised the second one, and mildly enjoyed the third.  Haven't seen either sequel since the theater, though.  May be time to revisit em before this hits.

Looks to be a VERY solid flick.  I had forgotten about some of the supporting cast on the team so the reminders and familiar faces were wonderful to see.  And I'm happy I noticed Josh Holloway running around in there too.  All of the previous Mission flicks had their merits, in varying degrees, but I enjoy them all well enough.  The recipe behind this one makes looking forward to it pretty easy.

All this trailer did was guarantee me that MI4 is coming.  I'm already very excited for the movie (because of Bird's involvement), but the trailer didn't really add much to it.  I don't mind.  It's just a teaser.  It's not like there's direct correlation between how exciting a trailer is and how good the actual movie is.

But the full IMAX shots looked VERY nice at a real IMAX screen.  HUGE.

So Giacchino is doing the music again, right?  The involvement of Bird leads me to "yes".

Yep

I watched the trailer. Here's what I can remember:

Three seconds of Simon Pegg playing a spy.

One and a half seconds of boobs.

Some fucking awful Eminem song.

Wow. That looks absolutely fantastic. I get the impression that Bird is hungry to show audiences some visuals the've never seen while simultaneously demonstrating that he's a genuine filmmaker. Really exciting.

Most people on these boards refer to Iron Giant when talking about Bird's brilliance. For me, he'll always be the guy that brought the world the classic Family Dog short. The tonal precursor to most of today's 1/2 hour animated shows.

I hope Bird and Giacchino working together again will result in some truly exciting cues.  It was thrilling to hear them work together in The Incredibles.  MI3 had some fun cues (Vatican sequence specifically), but ended up sounding too much like Lost and/or TV-level ominous droning.

I want them to cut loose!!!

So for the second time in a week, I'm gonna have to be the one to stand up for the music choice? So be it.

The Eminem track works. Gives the whole thing a Quantum of Solace/Another Way To Die vibe.

Cruise hasn't pulled off the action star thing in any of the three previous flicks.  He isn't doing himself any favours going opposite Holloway and Renner.  We'll see.

I'm pretty sure Bird resents the implication that he has to direct a live action film in order to legitimize himself as a director.

Probably, but he seems like a smart enough guy to understand why that perception exists, shrug his shoulders and deal with that reality.

Personally, his involvement is the only reason I'm interested in this and I hope he knocks this out of the park and gets to rub it in the faces of anyone who'd say he's not a legitimate director.

I'm seeing this for Brad Bird, it looks pretty good as well..

Surely you recognize the reality that a director of animated family films who makes the move to directing a massive budget tentpole action film is a huge unknown. Brad Bird has alot to prove the studios & probably even his peers if he wants a career as an A-List live action filmmaker. All that I meant was that it appears that Brad Bird the animator is about to break through in spectacular fashion.

Looks fantastic. But to be a cynical asshole for a second...the trailers for Green Lantern and Pirates 4 were pretty great too. And even though I liked GL...yeah...

For me he'll always be the guy partly responsable for how great the Simpsons used to be.

He and Conan yeah. That's how I've always thought of him, as one of the two that presided over the golden age of The Simpsons where week after week they were consistently pumping out not just the funniest show on TV at the time, but one of the funniest ever.

I love the first (massive De Palma fan), tolerate the second, and really dig the third.  The teaser looks good and the fact that Brad Bird is directing make it that much sweeter.

Oh, and I still say that Renner will turn out to be the franchise-requisite rogue IMF agent.  Him signing on to play the lead in The Bourne Legacy cemented that notion even further for me.  If I turn out to be wrong, it means Renner will have positioned himself to play super spies in THREE potential franchises (This, Bourne, and as Hawkeye for Marvel).  Once again, I really can't see him doing that...........hence my expectation of him turning out to be a baddie.  That and Pegg has hinted already that Renner isn't really set-up to take over the series once Tom steps down like early reports suggested.

Also, was Ving Rhames in the trailer anywhere?  I know he finally confirmed last summer that he would be appearing in this one, but we never found out the size of his role in it.  I'm guessing cameo at this point.

Not a HUGE unknown.  Andrew Adamson went from the first two Shrek movies to the big budget fantasy tentpole Chronicles of Narnia movies (the first two).  But of course... nobody really cares about Andrew Adamson.

The difference is that with Brad Bird, there are some expectations.  He's a director who has been trying to get an original live-action film of his own off the ground and he needs MI4 to be a hit in order to earn that live-action clout to make it.

I'm probably splitting hairs here but Adamson was still in the familiar realm of family fantasy when he made the leap. Granted, going from animation direction to live action isn't a historical unknown (George Pal & Steve Lisberger come to mind) but it's certainly an impressive feat nonetheless.

My point was that I don't believe that's his end goal.  He took MI4 because he wants another film making tool in his belt, and they offered him a ridiculous amount of money to learn to use it, and it lets him make his first time mistakes with somebody else's money, instead of his own and his friends' when it comes to making '1906,' not because he wants to move out of animation and into live action films for added legitimacy as a film maker.

I'm not a big fan of the Mission: Impossible franchise, and Cruise's Ethan Hunt still seems to dull this up -- but there does look to be some incredibly sparkly action sequences in there, which speaks really well of Bird.

Also, Josh Holloway. I wish he had the Renner role, honestly. Or that HE is the one poised to take over from Cruise's death grip.

Simon Pegg and Brad Bird guarentee i will see this.

If I could stomach the second one, it follows that I'm on board for this.

And did anyone else see the photos of Cruise actually climbing on top and jumping off the Burj Khalifa? The dude is quite mental.

They're the two main factors that have my ticket money secured as well.

Simon Pegg mixing it up in actual spy action? No? Doesn't get any reaction out of you people? Where have I gone?

Love me some Cruise, so I know I'm there, but it's nice to see something I am now excited for!

I would love it if Pegg got to get all 'Nicholas Angel' up in this movie.

A non-ironic Nicholas Angel was the vibe I got off him in the trailer actually. That's an awesome thing.

Well, I actually liked the previous three films, albeit for different reasons: the first was a competent spy thriller that also had the incredible Langley break-in sequence, the second is enjoyable cheese, and the third... well, see Justin Clark's analogy above. I liked it for the actors and J.J. Abrams' solid action scenes, but didn't really care.

Anyway, this looks to be quite a bit of fun, and it'll certainly be intriguing to see how Brad Bird's animation skill translates to live-action. I also agree on Pegg looking really badass. I do have to ask, is Josh Holloway really that big a deal? I've never seen LOST, so the only other place I've seen him was his small role as a vampire in the first episode of Angel.

Isn't Pegg's character just tech support in the third film?  If so, it's going to be fun to see what he does out in  the field.  Eh, who am I kidding?  He might get to pop off a few guns,  but he'll otherwise be consigned to playing Q to Cruise's Bond.

And for the record, I rather liked the third film, although it never reached the bar set by De Palma's film.

Yeah, Pegg was just tech support relegated to sticking around at IMF headquarters giving exposition (anti-God) and directing Cruise through the streets of Shanghai over the phone.  Glad to see that they kept him around.

The more I think it over, I have one major problem: the IMF is once again betrayed. If true, this means in all 4 films the main plot is that the IMF is betrayed.

Is Cruise OFFICIALLY hanging it up after this one? Screw loose or not, I dig Cruise and this franchise.....so I certainly won't mind continuing to see him do one of these every 4-5 years or so.

Other than having that horrible eminem song, that was a wicked trailer. This has been my most anticipated summer film for awhile. And the cast is absolutely unbelievable, Renner, Holloway, Anil Kapoor, Wilkinson, and Enqvist. Just a kick ass ensemble.

And yea, I wish Renner and Holloway switched roles. How much cooler would that final scene in the trailer be if it was Holloway instead of Renner?

I actually thought the Eminem song fit rather well, though I would've preferred to hear the whole "Mission: Impossible" theme music.

From an interview on Top Gear (of all places) I found out Cruize and Pegg got on very well in the third flick so it's no wonder they kept him around for the 4th.  Plus isn't Bad Robot involved still?

Again, I have to ask what the big deal about Holloway is. Was he really that good on Lost?

He's very good in a pretty standard "rogue with a heart of gold" role. Nothing that suggests he's even in the same league as Renner.

Yeah, I think he was.  That being said, I believe a lot of that sentiment has to do with simply missing the guy.  Other than his all-to-brief appearance during Community's paintball finale, he's been MIA.  Thus, the fans are overjoyed when he pops up somewhere.  Hell, I know I'm looking forward to Ghost Protocol in some measure based on the fact Sawyer is in it.

ETA: Also, what Merriweather said.

I've only ever seen Holloway in Lost where he was constantly great. Yeah, There's not much to suggest that he's in the same league as Renner, but truth be told there isn't much to suggest that he ISN'T in the same league either.

The IMF is basically the big screen version of CTU.

Regardless, Bird looks like hes delivering some thrilling action here.  I enjoyed the third movie quite a bit, so I'm glad to see Abrams is still involved.  Really excited about this cast too.
