Yeah, Little Sumpin' is awesome. Really liking these "American Wild Ales" that have been coming out over the last few months.

My girlfriend came home with some Magic Hat Hex and Banana Bread beer (yeah she likes fruit gimmick beers).

I'm also visiting Vermont on vacation soon and will be visiting Magic Hat's Brewery (possibly Longtrail's too - not sure) for some of the limited release stuff.

For tonight I am sitting down with my bottle of Uinta Brewing Company's Oak Jacked Imperial Pumpkin, part of the Crooked Series...one of the really special and rare brews I picked up the other week at Bruisin' Ales. Totally not a fan of pumpkin ales, but I was willing to give one a try, and this is what was recommended to me.

After tasting: Holy damn this is good! I dont know if you can still find it or not, but look anyway.

Post Drinking update: Holy fuck the 10.31% ABV hits you like a brick to the face with this one. So easy to drink, so smooth. Just the right amount of spice and pumpkin. Before you know it you've drank the whole thing and are quite intoxicated.

Had my fourth Highland Brewing Company Cold Mountain Winter Ale of this season tonight. This shit is amazing. It seems like every year it gets better.

Tapped this out at the growler station at Total Wine.  The manager is one of my patients' husband so he just gave me the slightly less than half growler for free.Drinking it right now and it is a doppelganger for the Innis and Gunn that I cannot get in SC.  May just have to keep some of this around in a pinch.  It is less butterscotch and more vanilla and the difference between the scotch barrels and the Jim Beam for the Curieux is readily apparent.  The Innis and Gunn is much smoother but whereas I couldn't sit down and get drunk off the I&G because it is too rich, I could see drinking more than one glass of the Allagash.

I also picked up an Abita Springs select from the station.  The card said it was a Honey Wheat but all I have found on their site is a Honey Rye that was released this summer.  That is probably what it is.  I'll give that a shot tomorrow maybe.

Question though, Chewers, what is your "Budweiser" i.e. your regular drinking beer?  For me I would say it is a Flying Dog Brewery Mixed Litter so I have a selection even when I'm not snobbing it up.  I ask the question because it seems like the sampler pack went up about $10 since the last I bought.

Tonight I'm drinking Lagunitas' newest Limited Release brew...Lagunitas Sucks Holiday Ale Brown Shugga' Substitute. Here's the story of why this year they were unable to brew their amazing Brown Shugga' holiday brew.

“ This sad holiday season we didn’t have the brewing capacity to make our favorite seasonal brew, the widely feard BrownShugga’ Ale. You see, we had a couple of really good years (thank you very much) and so heading into this season while we are awaiting a January delivery of a new brewhouse we are jammin’ along brewing 80 barrels of IPA and PILSand such every 3 hours. A couple months back we realized that since we can only brew a mere 60 barrels of Shugga‘ every 5 hours, that we were seriously screwed.

for every case of Shugga’ brewed, we’d short 3 cases of our daily brews. The new brewhouse will help insure that this kind of failure never happens again.

It’s a mess that we can not brew our BrownShugga‘ this year and we suck for not doing it. There is nothing cool about screwing up this badly and we know it. Maybe we can sue our sorry selves. There is no joy in our hearts this holiday and the best we can hope for is a quick and merciful end. F*@& us. This totally blows. Whatever. We freaking munch moldy donkey butt and we just want it all to be over…..

“Brown Shugga' Substitute" is a ‘Cereal Medley’ of Barley, Rye, Wheat, and Oats…. Full of complexishness from the 4 grains, and weighing in at 7.6% abv, Then joyously dry-hopped for that big aroma and resinous hop flavor.”

Even though this isnt as amazing as Brown Shugga' it's still pretty fucking great and definitely worth trying out.

I'll dip my toe into the Christmas seasonals this weekend. Picked up some Lagunitas and Widmer Brothers already and a bomber of Delirium Noel will be snatched up on my way home tonight.

Sculpin is a shell of its former self, though still a pretty good IPA.  Rumor has it that the switch from a seasonal bomber to a regular six pack required changes in the hop profile and brewing time ... in any event I find the floral notes are subdued and the tropical presence mostly gone.  In fact, for the price I now prefer Big Eye from Ballast Point.

Lagunitas Sucks, labeled a strong ale but really more of an IPA, might be beer of the year at the 10 dollars a sixer price point.  You don't get that kind of complex hop profile very often (tangerines and pineapple along with pine resin and a bit of white grapefruit along with grapefruit rind) and for that price its unreal.   Probably won't ever be made again.  Zombie Dust from Three Floyds is the new best pale ale in the world (though it seems more like an IPA to me).

Since it's december, the Bruery's Melange #3 and Truckee Brewing's barrel aged Eclipse 50/50 series are out and about.  Try to find these beers however you can.  World class in every respect.  I think the Bruery's G.F.A.R. is a great entry level sour, though a bit pricey.  I think it's going into their distribution network.

Sierra Nevada is supposedly opening their east coast operations outside of Asheville. I will be putting a job application in there as soon as its official.

Made a trip to Bruisin' Ales today with my gf. She got me a gift certificate from there for Christmas. I picked up three beers.

Brewery Ommegang Adoration Special Winter Ale (Belgian Strong Dark Ale: 10% ABV) Ale brewed with Corriander, Cardamon, Mace, Grains of Paradise, Sweet Orange Peel.

New Belgium Lips of Faith - Prickly Passion Saison (Saison/Farmhouse Ale: 8.5% ABV) Saison brewed with pear and passion fruit and french saison yeast

Widmer Brothers Reserve Barrel Aged Brrrbon (American Strong Ale: 9.4% ABV) Hidden in the beautiful dark amber color are aromas of vanilla and caramel that compliment perfectly the presence of bourbon. Soft oak flavors transition into a sweet yet slightly dry finish. After aging the ale for four months, the malt and hop complexity of Brrr has melded harmoniously with the bourbon barrels and become a truly one of a kind beer

And then to make it even better we went to lunch at the Bier Garden...and they had Allagash Curieux on draught. Holy crap, if you find this beer you have no choice but to buy it. I'd been looking for this for awhile at Bruisin' Ales, but every time I've been they've been out of it because it sells so fast. It's the Trippel, but aged in Jim Beam Barrels for 8 weeks

I had about 3 (or 4) Harpoon Winter Warmers last night.  Don't really remember.

Ruthless Rye is amazing.

Speaking of Sierra Nevada...they've made their decision and are building their east coast operations in Henderson County (right outside of Asheville). You better bet I will be applying to work for them

So, with Alex having moved on to other horizons, am I the lone homebrewer in these parts?

A few months ago I found an old Zymurgy ish in which the Rogue guys published a clone recipe of their Chocolate Stout. So I took that recipe, and added to the secondary fermenter oak chips that I'd soaked in Buffalo Trace whiskey for a week. Whiskey Barrel Chocolate Stout. Let that hang out for 3-4 weeks before bottling. Finally cracked one last night, and, well, it's something kind of special. The original sweetness of the Rogue stout is complemented by the oak's vanilla and whiskey notes better than I'd hoped. Needs a little more time to mellow out (and the head needs to calm down), but overall I think this is a triumphal brew. Gonna be difficult sharing this one... Damn you, Super Bowl!!!

I've been meaning to start.

My uncle is way into crafting his own beers and wines.  He had a building specifically for brewing built on his property and has his own hop "garden" (if that's what you'd call it).  He's sent me a few books to read before I start.  Once I get caught up with those I'll have to pop back in here and update.

Can't be that difficult right?  Right?

It's SO easy to brew good beer, it's unbelievable the first time you sip your creations. Later you can dive into the fine-tuning nitty-gritty and hardcore science, but if you can follow a recipe, that's not necessary at all to make high-quality stuff. Investing in the equipment (and the modest amount of space it takes up) is the only real hurdle. AHA's old motto: "It's not rocket science... unless you want it to be" pretty much says it all.

Loving me some Ommegang Adoration Special Winter Ale right now. Honestly, Ommegang can do no wrong in my book.

I've only just started getting into beer in the past year or so, myself - previously I'd only had a few crap megabrands out of a can, and I had concluded that apparently all beers taste like stale hops, rubbing alcohol, and soda water. Luckily, I made enough further experiments to realize how very wrong that was, and since then I've been broadening my horizons. (There are advantages to living six blocks from a little mom-and-pop liquor store wink.gif)

My tastes run strongly toward the darker end of the spectrum, stouts and porters, but really my primary criteria for a beer is that it has a flavor aside from "alcohol water" - anything that meets that is at least acceptable to me. The best beer I've had was Shanghai Stout on tap at the Auburn Alehouse - if I could, I'd ship that stuff cross-country in kegs. Dark, creamy, damn good. In my excursions to the local bottle shop, I've tried a number of different things, but my mainstay for dark beer is Deschutes Black Butte Porter, which has a nice kind-of-slightly-fruity flavor, especially in the aftertaste. (Lake Superior's Sir Duluth Oatmeal Stout is pretty good too.) I'm only just starting to venture back into pale beers after that initial run of cheap crap, but New Belgium's Trippel is pretty nice - I wouldn't have pegged coriander as something to flavor a drink with, but it actually works pretty well.

commodorejohn - i'm assuming you've been to fitger's?  i went to umd many moons ago and big boat oatmeal stout is the first microbrew i ever had (and remains one of my favorites to this day)  lord i wish it was available in the cities

I've been meaning to get down to Fitger's for a while now, but I've never actually gotten around to it (I work afternoon/evening shift most days, and IIRC they only open up the alcohol business after I go to work.) Maybe I'll drop in Saturday, as long as I'm on my try-not-to-blow-my-entire-tax-return-all-at-once "fun things I can do for a moderate sum" spree...

I just posted this in the 'dinner' thread, thought I'd re-post it here as well. Help a brutha out:

Just put a Boston Butt in the oven to slow roast for pulled pork sandwiches tonight, served on onion rolls and topped with jalepeno cole slaw. Making homemade potato chips too. Big slivers of kosher dill pickles on the side. Can anyone recommend a good beer to go with this? I'm no beer snob, but I'd like something great to go with all this.
