INSIDE MAN 2 WILL NEVER HAPPEN, AND OTHER THOUGHTS FROM SPIKE

Spike gets definitive.

What? Spike Lee actually wants to make a sequel to Inside Man and gets rejected? What the fuck is wrong with Hollywood?

It's a rhetorical question of course.

It makes no sense that it wouldn't get made. But I'm glad it didn't. This is a flick that really grew on me over repeat DVD viewings (it also has a dynamite commentary by Lee), and I think it ended perfectly. We don't need more story, and we're content imagining what happens next.

Hopefully someone forwards that interview to Megan Ellison

What I heard was that the script for Inside Man 2 was DRASTICALLY different from the first (it would have to be). Also, sadly, Brooklyn Loves MJ is long dead at this point.

In other words, what the fuck, Hollywood?

Spike Lee only has him self to blame. I like him as a person, but if I was a studio, I wouldn't trust the people around him either with a large budget. The

There are also studio issues with the people Spike hires. Studios are bound by union contracts. Most of Spike's people (especially his AD staff) didn't come up through that system.

And Lee also loves to try and buck the studio system. You can't do that and then ask why won't they give me 75-100 million dollars to make a movie.

As much shit as Spike likes to talk about Woodie Allen, that is the model he is going to have to go to. He is going to have to make smaller indie films in  New York or New Orleans or elsewhere and give up on some of these larger films. He has been down here scouting Nagasaki Deadline since Battleship was in production last year, and nothing has come of it.

Someone the other day suggested he should direct Denzel in the American Can film Will Smith is producing. That might be a good one for him, especially since Will Smith could run interference for him with the studio.

You can't blame a studio for being gun shy with Lee. Same as if I was a studio chief, I would be gun shy with Aranofsky after all his starts and stops on studio films.

Inside Man was his biggest budget and the movie made a lot of money. His most mainstream by far. With that success he got to make Miracle at St. Anna on the same budget but the film was a bust. In Hollywood, you're only as good as what your last film made at the box office.

Finally St Anna is mentioned. I don't know anyone who thought the film was good or worked. Its terrible and many say so what but you don't fumble a WW2 film like that.

Frankly I am kind of scared to see the effect this will have on that Kareem Abdul Jabbar book he wrote about that Black anti-tank regiment that Denzel optioned.

Guess Red Tails whenever its shown will have some bearing but St Anna ugh what a misfire.
