Spike Lee only has him self to blame. I like him as a person, but if I was a studio, I wouldn't trust the people around him either with a large budget. The
There are also studio issues with the people Spike hires. Studios are bound by union contracts. Most of Spike's people (especially his AD staff) didn't come up through that system.
And Lee also loves to try and buck the studio system. You can't do that and then ask why won't they give me 75-100 million dollars to make a movie.
As much shit as Spike likes to talk about Woodie Allen, that is the model he is going to have to go to. He is going to have to make smaller indie films in New York or New Orleans or elsewhere and give up on some of these larger films. He has been down here scouting Nagasaki Deadline since Battleship was in production last year, and nothing has come of it.
Someone the other day suggested he should direct Denzel in the American Can film Will Smith is producing. That might be a good one for him, especially since Will Smith could run interference for him with the studio.
You can't blame a studio for being gun shy with Lee. Same as if I was a studio chief, I would be gun shy with Aranofsky after all his starts and stops on studio films.
