I'm on a bit of a Steve Martin kick this week and I re-visited both of these. I like them. The second isn't all that spectacular but it has some nice moments. The mid-life crisis stuff in both could have been fleshed out a bit more. It was present more in the first through out but seemed to breeze by in the second all at the beginning.

Martin's facial reaction to his daughter giving him the news of her engagement is great. I wasn't even paying attention to Diane Keaton, I was just watching his face and how many phases it went through. Martin Short was tolerable here too. I'm not really a fan of Short (I can find him extremely annoying) but he does good. I think it's because he's used just enough and they don't really have do anything crazy. Unlike the second one where he gets more screen time and has the "slapstick" scene of him carrying around Martin's knocked out character.

I have seen the original Spencer Tracey/Elizabeth Taylor version and I do remember liking that one a lot too. Maybe I should revisit that too now that the remake is fresh in my mind.
