News International In Deep Shit

News International phone-hacking scandal continues to snowball.

This is becoming a bigger deal each day. Obviously we all suspect that organisations indulge in these kinds of tactics, but the fact that a)it's being exposed as such an ingrained part of Murdoch's print empire and b)it's happening in a country where the public seemingly gives a crap about stuff like this means it's a significant blow.

Good. I hope the some twats end up in jail. I hope this becomes a nationwide Hillsborough for Murdoch's tabloids. But seeing how tight the main culprits seem to be with that homunculus of a PM you have and how even the competing tabloids are trying to bury it, severe punishment seems unlikely.

Someone is going to release a Kate panty-shot and all will be forgotten. I hope I'm wrong though.

Cameron's going to take a beating on this one, which is nice. His close personal friend Andy Culson, former NotW editor and Cameron press chief, has essentially been revealed as authorising parts of the hacking by News International itself. Hard to see how the paper's reputation is going to survive this.

The other tabloids are actually going after this with some vigour, surprisingly. It's front page news for the Mirror and the Mail, and the broadsheets are naturally all over it. Nothing in the Sun, obviously.

Yeah? because the front pages I saw yesterday were clear of this. That's nice. Let's see if the mock moral superiority they have been feeding all these years brings them down. It would be a nice bit of poetic justice.

Yeah, yesterday morning this thing was still in neutral. The story kinda blew wide open yesterday with the hacking of the Wells/Chapman case AND the 7/7 families coming to light. The tabloid coverage is totally self-serving - who wouldn't want to kick an enemy like Murdoch when he's down? - but it's keeping the story prominent.

What the fuck did they do with 7/7? Yesterday I was joking about that, you're telling me they actually got into that? I can see no conceivable way to avoid prison for a LOT of people.

7/7? I can't believe how much I'm enjoying seeing the full cuntitude of these bastards come to light.

They hacked the mobiles of several of the victims' families, allegedly. And Coulson authorised payments to crooked police for information.

In related news, the best thing Hugh Grant has been involved with since The Remains of the Day (didn't see this posted anywhere a few months back when it hit):

Someone give the man a medal.

And Disciple, why do you ignore About A Boy?

Murdoch will throw whoever to the wolves and get away clean.  Depiste the fact that all of this will have come down from the very top (stop at nothing for pop news for the masses).

The whole "hacking a missing girls phone, then deleting mails to see if more show up" is sub-human vileness.  The fact that the family could then leave more messages on the phone, and thought she was alive because only she must be deleting mails is horrific.

I genuinely believe Murdoch to be one of the most evil men in the world today.  There's a great section on him in John Pilger's A Secret Country that shows he's been manipulating the WORLD for his own ends for years

For years I hoped that Murdoch's Bond-villain like career would come to a Robert Maxwell ending. I just know he's involved in shady shit up to his neck and figured he'd cross one his undoubtedly many accomplishes. The guy just seems bulletproof, sadly.

Added to the list: war widows!

Probably hoping they'd catch someone cheating on her husband while he was getting his head blown off in Afghanistan. Nothing sells papers as well as a chance for a braindead housewife  to act morally superior.

Wow, I'm posting a lot in this thread. The schadenfreude is strong in me it seems. And in this case, justified.

James Murdoch has just announced that the News Of The World is finished publishing after this Sunday. Damage control at its finest - I hope it doesn't work.

Ive only just caught up with this story (i live in a bubble what can I say) and the above is the point where I actually got angry. There is no excuse at all for this sort of thing and these people are lower than low for this.

Y'know I was also thinking that this kind of thing has been going on for a while with celebs and politicians but there wasn't this level of outrage. I mean come on, I know they are in the public eye but they are people too. Whole thing just shouldnt of happened and should have been stamped out long ago.

Essentially its looking like they'll try to get away with no high-profile losses/indictments by axing the paper and just going with a seven-days-a-week version of The Sun. Unbelievable.

Is there a high ranking politician with enough guts to really go after them? I guess not.

Given that our Prime Minister is on first-name terms with the News International board, I'd say no.

EDIT: "The Guardian were out to get us, and they got us."

FUCK YOU.

If they axe the NOTW it means that there will be an upswing in white van driving fucktards on the streets drinking on a Sunday. Now thats bad for the country!

apparantly Kenneth Clarke is on the Warpath and it will probably spell the end of the BSkyB taker oveer, which is good news.

All today has lacked so far is Spider Jerusalem showing up with the Chair Leg of Truth and repeatedly battering Rebekah Brooks with it. Perhaps that will come tomorrow.

That said, there could well be a method to News International's madness: http://blogs.reuters.com/mediafile/2011/07/07/is-murdoch-free-to-destroy-tabloids-records/

Holy shit, Hugh Grant's on Question Time and he's tearing into all of them, Murdoch, the Tories, Labour. It's actually kinda bizarre and awesome.

sunonsunday.co.uk was apparently registered on 5th July.

Get to rebrand, ship unwanted staff, lower the amount of newsrooms they have and carry on regardless.  That's spinning a disaster into a win and still being able to claim it a 'strong response to the situation'.

And Rebeccah Brooks just carries on untouched

No matter how much I despise Murdoch, the man is astonisingly good at what he does (be a world class cunt)

Agree that Hugh Grant has been great in this thing. Murdoch and his lackeys will make him pay eventually but what he's doing is pretty incredible.

Grant has been ridden harder by the tabloids than probably anyone alive today. It's great seeing him just let go and speak what I'm guessing 99% of their targets think.

Brookes can't survive this, everyone including the PM (and they are friends)  is calling for her head.  Glad Coulson got arrested though.

The actual audio from her speech to the ever-so-slightly irked NotW staff this afternoon. Awwwwwkward, etc.

Yeah, it's a pretty sweet revenge he's got going. I've seen the clips of Question Time and some other interviews with Grant online, it's like his new mission in life or something. I love that the quintessential meek, bumbling, befuddled Englishman has turned into such a sharp, witty, and articulate thorn in Murdoch's side. Yes, we live in a time where Hugh Grant is apparently the last guy in the world you wanna fuck with. I hope this thing gets even more momentum and just keeps going and going until it touches every part of the evil empire.

Also been watching CNN to see if some of this sticks to that tosser Piers Morgan, sadly nothing yet. If you want a laugh though, read his Grant-related Twitter messages from the 7th. LOL do you think Hugh hit a raw nerve?

I think Grant needs to team up with Steve Coogan to form some kind of anti-tablid avenger force...

Holy shit! What an absolutely gigantic cunt that McMullen(?) guy is. The BBC guy looked ready to throw up.

Strangely, I get a somewhat tortured and apologetic vibe off him, like he is actually aware of the terrible things he's done (#1 Driving Deholm Elliott's daughter to suicide) and is haunted by it. On the other hand, fuck him and it's hilarious to see he hasn't dared go home for about 3-4 days now and is still slumming around in the same clothes as he was when it all kicked off earlier in the week.

Greg Dyke a man who had the decency to stand down when the shit hit the fan on his watch (despite it not being his fault) vs a man who is happy to tap celebrities phones because they have two houses.

I cannot stand the News of the World and I am very glad to see this happen.

indeed.  The fact that he fell back to 'well how many houses do you have, how long are you on the red carpet being photographed?' after failing on the 'freedom of the press' angle was just pathetic

I hope Coogan lamped him one in the green room after.

It needs to be taken with a pinch of salt as it does come from The Daily Mirror but *if* true, shit's about to go nuclear: they're claiming NI may have also hacked into the phones of September 11 victims.

jesus.  I'd forgotten what a wretched rag the Mirror (my Mum's paper of choice) was.

As one of the commenters said '45p - that's a fucking disgrace' :)

I just became a Steve Coogan 'fan' what a national treasure....

So they allegedly bought a book containing all the royal telephone numbers from a crooked policeman working in the palace.

This is the gift that keeps on giving.

Please please please let the Daily Mail get caught up in this.

I feel I must chastise you for being so late to the Coogan train. Unacceptable!

Seriously though, that clip is righteous. I love that Coogan's tone is EXACTLY the same as in so many classic in character angry rants.

I don't think he's tortured at all, I think he's putting on his best victim face while EVIL MILLIONAIRE STEVE COOGAN rips him a new one. And the thing with Denholm Elliott's daughter needs to be mentioned more, it's just as horrible as the phone hacking stuff if not more so. To find a whole new way to destroy the life of someone who is at her lowest point already? I hope this cunt dies alone, slowly, in pain.

And when are we going to get names of the bent cops who provided all these leads? They need to be exposed too.

"A well-placed source has told the BBC that in 2006, when she was editor of the Sun, Rebekah Brooks called the Browns to inform them she knew their son Fraser was suffering from cystic fibrosis. The Browns believe only medical staff treating Fraser had access to that information and friends of the family say Ms Brooks' call caused them immense distress since they were only just coming to terms with the diagnosis." - from the BBC's ongoing live web coverage.

Ugh.
