Just saw Bones

I just rented "Bones" on pay for view. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It had some pretty fun moments and Tony Gardener's effects were really good as usual. My main gripe was the color of the blood in the flick. It looked like tempra paint and was too pink or bright in most scenes. The prosthetics on Michael T Weiss were really good.

I was happy with the film too. I was villified for renting it, but it turned out okay in the end, as my gal actually went home and told her mom to rent the thing - and she DID.

And mom LIKED it too!

I too noticed the blood - and assumed it was some sort of homage to 70's horror. Before Dick Smith showed the way, every movie's blood was orange - especially Romero's. Martin and Dawn feature hemoglobin that looks freshly squeezed at all times...

I figured Dickerson was making an oddball visual reference.

I thought the blood was a '70's homage, as well. I personally got a real kick out of Bones. I thought it was a fun flick.

You know the 70's homage never occured to me. You're probably right. That makes a lot of sense.

yeah, I rented Bones with the intention of making fun of it, and it was pretty hilarious, but it was also a much better film than that remake of The Haunting, in just about every respect. Effects were more interesting, characters more interesting, backstory made more sense, FX were cooler.

We're talking about the Snoop Dogg movie, right? I think it's actually called "Bonez" or "Bonz" or something like that.

I'm working on the DVD review for the Corner now. It's a damn shame that New Line had no confidence (at least that's what I'm led to believe) when it came down to releasing this flick. They put absolutely NO money into advertising AT ALL. When I spoke to some people about it they had know clue it had even come out!

Hey, I went to see BONES in the theater. Ernest Dickerson directed, so I had to show up. (Dickerson did SURVIVING THE GAME, DEMON KNIGHT, and the new BIG SHOT flick for FX)

Great visuals, good scares. Best use of raining maggots since SUSPIRIA. Loved Pam Grier and Snoop Dogg, although I had trouble figuring his character out. I felt sympathy for him, he seemed like a nice guy, but then he went around killing kids on a vengeance kick... I guess being in Hell warps your sense of right and wrong somewhat.

I was pretty bored with the weird third act. Aimless, without any real suspense. Too bad, because it could have been a "great" movie instead of just "pretty good."

I agree with the general consensus in this thread: a very good bordering on great horror film for the first two-thirds that goes flying off the rails once Bones's mansion goes up in flames. Despite this, Dickerson and his screenwriters did an excellent job of smuggling in some thought-provoking subtext relating to the ruination of lower-class, African-American urban neighborhoods, while also delivering some solid scares derived largely from invoking the great giallo films of the 60's and 70's. I listened to some of the commentary and was not at all surprised to hear Dickerson dropping Mario Bava's name repeatedly.

Flaws and all, BONES is definitely worth a look.

Lest we forget Steve Murphy's review from way back:

The Bava influence (along with Argento, particularly SUSPIRIA) was quite noticeable - lots of candy-colored neon and flashing lights. But yeah, the third act just derailed everything that came before it, which is a real shame, since the movie was channeling quite a lot of good stuff. It also made me nostalgic for some of the better seventies blaxploitation flicks along the lines of J.D.'s REVENGE and SUGAR HILL (not the Snipes flick, but the killer-afro-zombie one).

Also, a pox on it for wasting the talents of the lovely Katherine Isabelle, who was so damned good in GINGER SNAPS.

Oh gees here we go...

Okay I rented this movie today because alot of people had said it wasn't to bad. My first thought wasn't to highly of this movie cause I just couldn't picture snoop dog in a horror film unless it was some chesse ball flick. I went to watch this movie with an open mind, not sure of what was gonna happen or what I was gonna see. The film was solid in what it wanted to accomplish, it kept me interested, but sometimes lost me. I actually found myself fast forwarding through the ending cause it was taking a long time. Snoop played a descent characther, but I was confused because at first he seemed like a peaceful guy wanting to help out his "hood" if you will. But then he turned into this killing machine who mixed dark comedy with his quick right handed switchblade. I was hoping for some better kills, they all seemed the same. The gore was kinda unrealistic as in the blood was a bit too much but the color was fine. People said it was a homeage to 70's style but it looked just like any other blood to me. I'm happy to report the maggot scene did it's job. Basically I went into this movie thinking ok this is gonna be one of those ghetto gangster always useing the f word flicks. I came out saying wow I am impressed, but not that impressed. Give credit where it is do Bones took a different direction which was nice in some ways and kinda dumb in others. Overall it was good but thats just it. Time to watch the Toxic Advenger!!!
