The Amazing Spider-Man officially pisses me off - Page 3

The problem with remaking a pretty great movie that's still very much in the public consciousness is that everything in your movie feels either redundant or not as good. I can't believe they're going to make us slog through the origin story again. And I really can't believe someone thought it would be a good idea to portray the acrobatic daredevilry of Spider-Man by not fucking showing it.

This does not look to be an improvement on Raimi's films in any way other than casting. If you think this more accurately captures the character of Spidey, then I don't know what to tell you. It looks like a drag that is aping BATMAN BEGINS in the worst possible way. Anyone hoping for a more wise-cracking Spidey needs to abandon hope. Morose.

Of course, we'll see about the final film. But judging from this, no fun to be had here.

That's still a bootleg, but here's the official in HD:

I wasn't writing this reboot off out of hand.

At least, until I saw this trailer.  I don't mean to throw out a bunch of hyperbole, but I can't think of a trailer in recent memory that immediately turned me so far off of a film as this one.  Not even the first Green Lantern trailer.  This looks like it's taking itself WAY too seriously, and dreadfully boring, to boot.  Spider-Man may have a hard life, but he's still supposed to be fun, dammit.  This doesn't look fun.  At all.

I know it really seems like I'm gunning for this movie, but honestly, I'm willing to let it win me over. This trailer ain't doing it though.

I agree entirely that Spider-Man should be fun, and hopefully the movie isn't as mopey and humorless as the trailer suggests.

That said, I didn't think, bar the action scenes, the Raimi films were much fun either, they were campy and melodramatic which isn't the same thing.

No doubt I would have preferred to see another Raimi flick, but this doesn't look bad at all.

Oooops, sorry for posting a bootleg guys, I thought it was legit.

Anecdotal: friend of mine who isn't the hugest fan of the Raimi films was totally jazzed for this. We watched the trailer and he was totally deflated. "That's not the movie I wanted." he said. He was even more bummed when I told him that Peter's parents figure prominently in the story.

Things that could turn it around in the next trailer: a wisecrack, the Lizard looking awesome and some kick-ass, real in costume stuntwork. Oh, and Emma Stone with less clothing.

I'm liking that optimism! But I'm worried about Budget Lizard.

Me too. Especially since a full-on lizard-man doesn't seem in keeping with the tone presented in this trailer.

But this trailer could just be a bad marketing call and not represent the film accurately. They might just be trying to sell us Spider-Man Begins. Who knows.

Am I crazy or did I see Peter Parker with a hoodie, lowered over his desk, writing shitty poetry? It looks like he's plotting a school shooting.

One of the best aspects that I've loved (and one Raimi nailed in his films) about the character is that by being Spider Man it gives him this outlet from his nerdy, bullied and boring existence.  He gets to be the wisecracking hero who all the jocks want to be and all the ladies love.  Raimi was always able to trend that line between "With great power comes great responsibility" and "Holy fuck, I can climb walls and swing through the city!?. This shit is awesome!" very successfully.

All I got from this teaser was it fucking sucks to be Peter Parker.

Man, screw well made. Any movie made in the studio system with as much backing as this is going to be well made. Unless the director is aggressively incompetent. Which from only having seen his one film, Webb certainly isn't.

What this movie's problem is, to me, is that it will be a studio film through and through. I'm guessing that after the obvious wrangling Sony gave to Raimi on SM3 and the subsequent mess, they decided to get someone easier to handle. This trailer looks exactly like the focus group driven, studio notes dictated, impersonal product I expected since the reboot was announced. There will sadly be no Raindrops montages in Spidey's future.

I like the actors and the material (and I'm a nerd), so I'll give it a shot. Actually, the only thing that didn't really work for me was the end stuff. Hope that's just a one off thing in the flick, and we get to see Spidey swinging around like he's a yo-yo in a washing machine.

Michael Massee is listed in the IMDB credits, but the character's name isn't given. Pretty sure he plays the mugger, and with his history that's a little fucked up.

I suddenly feared for Martin Sheen's life just a little bit.

Caught the trailer before Captain America. Again, opening really didn't do much (and emo-Parker...eh), but damn if that first-person sequence (even with some sketchy CG), wasn't impressive on the big screen.

The POV stuff did look much better on the big screen; almost vertigo inducing. But the emo stuff leading up to it somehow felt even more turgid and dull.

It's funny, my friend is a completely forgiving moviegoer as long as there are effects and action (he loved Wolverine, Pirates 4, Prince of Persia, Transformer 1-3, Terminator Salvation, etc. Basically every standard subpar blockbuster) but he was outwardly irritated by the POV sequence in that Spidey trailer. Whereas I just shrugged in disappointment, he went nuts about how awful it looked, how the camera movement felt completely unlike human movement and that having to watch an extended scene of that would be nauseating.

Congrats Sony, your teaser is even pissing off the easy sells.

Yes, it was completely unlike the human movement of a man swinging through buildings on webbing then crawling around on a wall. If only they'd done their field research!

I think his problem with the POV was not the swinging, but the crawling/walking. It looks wobbly and fake. Call it uncanny valley or whatever, but it doesn't feel at all like authentic human vision. It feels like a video game.

It actually syncs up to Mirror's Edge fairly well.

So apparently the Lizard doesn't wear a lab coat in this. WTFFF

That's another inevitable issue that this movie is dealing with. The last three not only had recognizable villains, but their trailers also emphasized the conflict, so you saw Spidey struggle with Sandman, Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus. Here, probably because they aren't finished animating the Lizard, the conflict in this trailer is OH NO HE'S BECOMING SPIDER-MAN. As in, they should have waited for some Lizard footage for a trailer instead of pushing the RESTART angle so hard -- which is really something I think they should have hid from the advertisements.

Also caught the trailer before Captain America.

The POV does work better on the big screen.  The huge fail however, remains the teenage-emo-wanna-be-Dark-Knight stuff beforehand.  I'm still puzzled about the web that Peter/Garfield pulls from the back of his neck.   What's THAT all about?

Plus, the no villain thing makes it a pretty conflict free scenario, thus the result was 'blah'.    The main conflict seemed to be teenage angst, which can get dull once you're past, oh, 19.

Considering that his origin story involves his uncle/father figure dying when he could have stopped the guy before it got to that point, I'd say that maybe Peter has something to be a bit angsty about.  For a while at least.

My assumption about the thread hanging from his neck is that he synthesizes his web formula from it. Why a spider would leave web in a bite is beyond me though.

I love how San Diego Police just gave free advertising to The Amazing Spider-Man in their official press statement.
